Overclocking = startup repair?

Hello all,

I built myself a new system earlier this month - Lancool K7 case, EP45-UD3R motherboard, Q9550, 4GB ram (two simms) 1066. HT Omega striker 7.1 sound card..

It seems to work fine - however I tried a very modest overclock 10mhz over the stock with VCore, VTT, PLL set to normal and MCH - normal and rest to auto (my ram downclocked to 686 with 2.00D) and ....I couldn't boot windows. Not only couldn't I boot windows but I had to use startup repair. (Last Known configuration or safe mode might have worked..but I didn't bother).

Previoulsy I had experimented with a pure auto overclock to 3GHZ - and that seemed to work okay. I just heard its not good to overclock on auto.

overclocking on auto = bad.. but the start up repair is a vista problem.. if your system crashed due to the overclock while windows was loading.. you can try loading the vista disc and doing the start up repair to fix it..
 
Yeah. I was going to try for a real overclock as I read the how to overclock thread - but the startup problem is common enough eh? It took my like 5x on the repair thing to fix it.. :( It would start up again right after Vista claimed to have fixed the problem but would fail on a cold boot.
 
hmm interesting.. i know my friend had a problem with his vista on that same board.. but he repaired it once and its worked since.. but that was mostly his fault because the overclock failed halfway into windows booting up..
 
Thats odd. Ive had more failed overclocks on a few different boards with Vista installed than I can even begin to count and have never had that problem. I have corruped my os a couple of times, though. I need to invest in a 1tb drive, preferably external, for imaging.
 
After a couple of "freezes" etc during Windows startup which hosed the OS during OCing adventures I developed the habit of booting from a Memtest86+ boot CD. If that runs the first couple of tests with no errors its likely that Windows will load ok. Note the "likely", no warranties expressed or impled but I have not had to reload or repair an OS in a while.

Strange such mild OC settings would cause so much trouble. No clue.
 
It's pretty annoying...that's for sure. I went ahead and did a clean install as I don't have that much on this new system yet. Maybe I should set up some partitions..
 
I always stress test the hell out of my rig then format and do a clean install. Its surprisingly easy to corrupt your data especially with Vista because of superfetch.
