Hi, i just got my ati 5850, its a non reference so i cant overvolt it, but i was wondering what some safe operating temps are, and whether or not 850 core 1100 mem is pushing it too hard?
 
Moving to video card section.

According to the manuf 90C+ is safe, I dont agree. I will let the video heads chime in as I just water cool and eliminate the concern.
 
my bad i thought it belonged in the overclocking section, sorry!. well, its currently doing 55 - 60C under load and 29 - 31 idle at 850 core 1100 mem, am i gonna be ok leaving it at these speeds?
 
i'd push it to 900 at least. Also, you can put an ASUS bios on it and run voltage tweak for 1000/1100 and stuff like that.

Card never gets anywhere near 70c for me, so i can't comment on temperature.

Which games do you need the OC for? At what resolution do you play?

Running 60C load is extremely cool compared to many cards on the market. Well under the thermal limits.

850/1100 should be fine, every card is different, clock it up and scan for artifacts .
if your not adding volts, you should not see too much temp increase.
I'm on water, so I have no temps for comparison, but the card is rated for 90, but personally, I would try and keep it under 80

The Asus BIOS wont work if the card does not have software voltage control, which many non reference cards do not

All i know is that I am able to add voltage to my reference XFX card after putting the ASUS bios on it.

My mistake then. :)

OP, 850 is a good place if you want to stop there. your card might do more, but certainly nothing bad will happen if you leave it at 850.

Everquest II is currently the only game i really play, and im nowhere near the absolute rock solid 60fps id like to be at 100% max settings (1080p).

Performance barely seems better than my old GTX260 core 216.


Im only averaging 35 - 45 fps, and IMO anything other than a rock solid 60 is unplayable.

Interesting. Are you using the 10.4 drivers? If you aren't seeing much improvement over a 260, you may want to uninstall all your video drivers and reinstall the latest. Generally, the 5850 even at stock is going to be quite a bit faster than your old card, putting even the gtx285 down by at least 15%+ with current drivers.

I have not played EQ2, is it possibly CPU bottlenecked?

If all else fails, maybe a format and reinstall of your OS will do it. Speaking of which, if you're still on win XP that has been said to hold back performance on the 5xxx series cards.
 
My card is at 930/1200 @ 1.15 and it never goes over 70c with fan at 45% and 99% load. I can't imagine getting anywhere near 90c. If I volt up any more, it gets unstable so I'm not sure how you could even get it up that hot before it cr@ps out unless your fan profile was inadequate.

I have a 5850 XFX card and I pass the highest settings for core clock on the ATI overclock CCC

I tried ATItool and it would not all me to change my clock speeds... grayed out.


anyone know a good utility to OC the core of this thing?
 
MSI Afterburner. You have to go into the config file and enable the unofficial overclocking setting, but after that it works great. There are instructions around here somewhere... :)

EQ2 is CPU dependent and very much so. I could tell a big difference from my Q6600 to a Q9650 to finally my i7-930. With my 930, I could play it maxxed out with my 8800GT.

Yeah, MSI Afterburner is THE OC tool to use. You have to make a change in the MSIAfterburner.cfg. Change the 'EnableUnofficialOverclocking' line from 0 to 1 and save. I also remove ATI CCC because is often conflicts with Afterburner and other than gamma correction, I don't have much use for it. On most reference cards (including XFX) you can increase voltage in Afterburner without messing with the BIOS.
