Overclocking new GPU? 7950.

Just installed my new 7950. I got this one.

I see the overclocking options in the catalyst controller and I've installed trixx. I want to overclock it as high as it can go safely but i've never overclocked a gpu before.

Should i tinker with trixx or should i just bump all the sliders (memory clock, gpu clock, and power) in the amd catalyst controller?

Any recommended settings that should work for me without issue?

Also i want it overclocked when i'm using graphic intensive programs such as games but when not i want it to slow down like amd does already. trixx looks like it forces the overclock speeds at all times.

Im having some odd Issues however.
I tried afterburner and trixx and they seem to conflict with amd overdrive. When I turn overdrive off afterburner overclocking doesnt work and when overdrive on, afterburner reports the speed that overdrive is set to.

Also when I run the bioshock benchmark, right after the first scene my core clock keeps dropping to 700mhz, no idea why.
 
Ok so i've tried trixx and msi ab. When i overclock with both the core clock and the memory ramp up for short periods then randomly go down to 700 or 800 and fluctuate the entire time. The memory clock drops to stock speeds as well.

I've tried leaving the fan on 100 even when the temps never go over 60c. I've also tried moving the voltage around from stock all the way up to 1.3. No luck.

Could the issue be in my power supply? I would assume my system would just crash if i reached the limit.

im using a 550W psu to power the rig in my sig

Edit: I went to this power supply calculator and entered in everything i have and then some, like 2 extra hard drives, a little more voltage on the cpu than I really use, and a couple extra fans and the power only came out to 527, what i actually have showed me 458. So i guess the power supply is not the culprit here.

Maybe I'm just not understanding something, someone please clue me in.

I recently purchased a 7970 dual x from sapphire and it had unlocked voltage but it didn't work in trixx. Trixx acted like it had voltage control but did not actually change when I monitored it in gpuz.afterburner did work tho. Very weird considering its a sapphire card. Your PSU very likely could be an issue. I'd personally not go less than 650 watt with yoursetup. And a quality 1 at that.
 
I doubt the power supply is the issue here. He has a quality 550w unit that offers 44 amps on the +12v rail. I'm running an i5 3570k at 4.6 and a 7970 OC on an Antec 550w with 37 amps on the +12v rail and it has no issues whatsoever.
 
Forgive me for sounding like a n00b, but does that power setting have anything to do with the voltage? Does it increase voltage?
 
Can we get some details on this issue? My clocks are all over the place... when OC'ing my card to anything over 925mhz it randomly clocks itself down to 500-850mhz.. temps are great and memory clocks remain to whatever I set
 
Bump power up 20%. Set core to 1000 and mem to 1250. Slowly bump up and run benches. That's what I did.

Mine dualx sapphire is set at 1150 core 1500 mem
 
You guys need to have power limit set to 20%, that would explain the throttling clocks and the card not getting any increased voltage. Also OP, what version of the 7950 do you have? Several are voltage locked such as the Gigabyte 7950.
 
The power limit allows the card to receive more juice on input. It needs this to apply higher voltages (because higher voltages = higher power consumption). Increasing the clock speed also increases the consumption too, though less so than simply applying more voltage.

For those who say the PSU is the issue - a 450 watt unit + OCed 3570k would run this build handily enough. 550 watt is the sweetspot for it, really,

SOo, OP, put the powerslider to 20, and experiment with modest clock speed increase. Then keep increasing the core clock speed 'til it crashes while benchmarking. The bump the voltage and retest at the clock speed your bench crashed on. Rinse and repeat. Watch your GPU temps (and VRM temps in GPU-z) while doing all this. Keep the GPU at 75 or below, and the VRMs at 80 or below. 1.2v is a fair goal, I wouldn't go beyond that, at least for now. Get 1100mhz on the core for now and you're dandy.

That's OCing in a nutshell :)
