Overclocking my i7 2600K

I have a i7 2600k and Asrock Extreme4 Z68 motherboard. I heard I can overclock this processor easily by a few clicks of the UEFI. Can anyone explain what exactly I have to do and what sort of Ghz I can reach? I am using a Gelid Tranquillo HSF for cooling.

you can probably leave everything else alone.

Why change voltages at all at first? Just change the multi to 45 or 46 and see how it runs and if it runs stable. Mine runs fine with no voltage mods at all.

As for the OP, I don't have your motherboard, so I can't help you with what the actual settings are called and I don't have screenies. Hopefully someone here on [H] could maybe hook you up to ease your stress...
 
I see no multiplyer setting but I do see a "Load optimized CPU OC Setting" which I can set to 4.0GHz all the way to 4.8Ghz. Should I just change this and the Motherboard would do the work for me? There is also a "Turbo 50" option which apparently OCs my CPU, RAM and GPU for me. I am not sure if I want the RAM and GPU touched. My GPU is already overclocked and is running rather hot. Perhaps I should ignore Turbo 50 and just use the "Load optimized CPU OC Setting" to something like 4.6Ghz?

What motherboard do you currently own? For folks new to overclocking, a lot of vendors offer "one click overclocking" on their motherboards. It's sometimes a setting in the BIOS, or a button on the motherboard itself you push (Like MSI's OC Genie).

With the 2600K, your base clock is 100MHz, so a multi of 45 would give you 4.5GHz. Really simple math here.... I would not set your V-core over 1.4V, right now, around 1.3V seems to be the "sweet spot". Always try to get your V-core as low as possible without making the system unstable. There are many other settings you can adjust besides the V-core of course, it's time to read up, unless of course you want to do the "one click" noob overclocking thing =)

You have a very nice motherboard so.... if you dont understand this then maybe you need to use the one clickie quickie bloatware that comes on your board's cd.

Put your multiplier @ 48
Leave base clock at 100 (it sucks on sandy to touch this anyway)
Enable CPU PLL overvolting feature if applicable to your board.
Change your CPU PLL to around 1.68'ish volts - yes lower it a bit and dont use auto
Change your load line cali to whatever the middle setting is for your bios/uefi
Change to offset voltage and use 0.065v (chip will idle around 1.006v +/- a few hundredths
You can use fixed voltages as so many people swear is required but bah humbug. Anyways you are not going to damage your chip running a fixed of 1.4 in example. The chip will not be pulling any current anyways unless it is loaded so just think of voltage as a straw in your chocolate milk, the fatter the straw the more milk you can suck but the more milk you will consume. Just think of it that way lol.
Enable C1E but disable 3 and 6 - there is a sleep/wake bug that makes the chips lock your shit up anyways so not worth it. Maybe they fixed it with the Z, I dont know.
The chip will load up to around 1.44volt but at 4.8ghz you are going to need the extra volts. Trust me.
It is safe.... again it is safe as long as you can get it good and cool using a good fan and HS. Dont use the shitty intel crapass fan and HS.
Set your RAM to whatever XMP profile it supports if applicable. If not have fun the work is on you to find stable clocks and voltage. I wouldnt run past 1.55 ram volts as this is voltage directly plugged into the CPU mem controller.

This is just for starters. I would play with many things to make sure it is stable. These settings work for me and are ROCK SOLID day in and day out. Im watercooled though so you may not get 4.8+ on air at any reliable temperature.

I'm just making recommendations to get you pointed in a direction. The rest is up to you and research and these forums and other members. You will work it out. I would start smaller and work your way up to he coveted 4.8-5.1 oc range.

I auto overclocked my CPU to 4.2Ghz via the "Load optimized CPU OC setting". I just played an hour of GTA IV and things appear stable. I don't want to run Prime95, but I will let my gaming be the test to see how stable this is. Since my cooler is only a budget one (Gelid Tranquillo) I don't think I will be reaching 4.8Ghz. To be honest, I am happy with 4.2Ghz, I think this is a good overclock from 3.4Ghz. For some reason ASRockAXTU (extreme tuning utility) is reporting my CPU temperature 10C + LOWER than what the UEFI says.

Do you notice any difference at all with that 800 mhz overclock?

You got it! The one click quickie works for tons of people. Plus honestly 4.6 and up tend to make lots of heat and wasted energy if you really are not going to push that hard. Kyle and the crew here proved that you eliminate CPU to GPU bottlenecking on Sandys at around 4.0 ghz OC. So you are going to be MORE than fine with 4.2 and congrats that you were able to overclock. 4.2 is actually a lot of power believe it or not considering the stock speed of your 2600K is already stupid fast.
 
Thanks tangoseal, 4.2Ghz is fine with me. I have a pretty good CPU now which should last me a few years :). Knocks the spots of my previous Q9450

This... I was running my 2600K @ 4.8ghz when I first got it, but I can pop it down to 4.4ghz (my 24/7 use) with a full 0.1v lower than I need for 4.8... reduces the heat and all that significantly, and it's still absurdly fast :D. Tested it fully for stability and just enjoy... the "one click quickie" indeed is a great thing in general, even though I haven't personally used it. The lower volt/speed setting keeps my room cooler even though I have AC on, and peak temps are way way down... good stuff all around.
 
I am wondering if the one click OC that I performed raised the voltage at all? It may increase this unnecessarily. I will have a look later.
 
With most "one click" solutions, the voltage will be where it needs to be. With the new i5's, your CPU has tons of VID's it can use. The CPU will "ask" for the right voltage basically, and will even be able to manage it's own TDP. While under load, it will also ask for more power.

Don't play with the settings unless you understand them.
