Overclocking My Hard Drives

yep.... gonna get me an Intel board for that then...when I get the spare change to do so. Looks very intriguing to say the least... thanks ;) I'm sure my wife will just LOVE the idea of buying more stuff to "play" with :p
 
Aside from increasing the PCI bus speed on an older motherboard that will support it, for some enterprise-level drives you can format them differently to squeeze a bit more capacity out of them.
I took these 17500MB 10K SCSI drives and formatted them to give me 19321MB of capacity, by increasing bytes per sector from 512 to 4096 bytes.

pardon my ignorance on drives...but doesn't increasing the bytes per sector have other adverse effects for instance if you have a lot of files smaller than 4k?
 
that's complete shit. Tell me then why SAS/SCSI drives spin at 15,000 RPM?

Have you seen a 1TB 15k rpm drive?
Have you seen a 1TB Raptor?
Look up platter diameter for 15k rpm drives.
Look up areal numbers for 15k rpm drives.
What does this tell you?

lol what? That doesn't increase capacity at all, infact changing the size of the bytes per sector would only make small files stored inefficiently. If you want more "space" you'd need to use a different file system which even then wouldn't yield much. The only instance I can think of where you could store more data with compatible filesystem data is the "DMF" format which gives 1.68MB of usable (1.72MB) space on a floppy opposed to 1.38MB (1.44MB). There were limitations with this though such as the number of files in the root directory, limit to numbers of folders etc. etc.
 
its totally possible man, i used ruvard drive tuner 3 to get my 5400 rpm to 12,000 and now im running a sustained read of 90mb/s :cool:

in all honesty I didnt expect this thread to develop so nicely :) but it looks like everybody is learning a little bit more about HD possibilities. I do like the intel raid configuration where you can have those faster partitions on the same disk but I only have a 680i :(
 
Tweaked a little more last night. With all my apps and like 7 games installed I still had almost 80gb free on my 150gb boot partition so I made it smaller down to 120gb. Now access time is down to 9.0ms and burst up to 1100 MB/s LOL

I like the Intel possibilities as well...but alas...I've also got a 680i already, and have opted for the 780i upgrade already. Ohwell... getting water cooling gear in the near future...will go for an intel board later I guess :p
