first off, here are the specs..

asus a8n-sli premium
a64 3200+ venice
bfg 7800gtx
corsair 2x512 pc3200 (i know it's crap)
ocz ps600 psu
wd raptor 74
wd 250ks
watercooled (d5 pump, storm 35c, maze4 gpu 40c, maze4 chipset 48c, 2xBIX rads) in that order..

i've tried to overclock before, but i am a complete noob that needs step by step instructions.. i read the sticky and printed it out to read it again, but i do not get it at all..

i installed asus' aibooster, nvidia's ntune, but none of them seem to work for me? should i just delete those programs? should i just do everything in the bios?

do i OC the ram first? or the cpu? how do i go about OCing the gpu? i want the most out of my computer but i want it stable.. how do i check for stability?

for the ram, if i could only get a certain amount, should i use the divider? and how do i know how much to divide it by? what temps are regular for a system? can you OC the chipset? i read that someone wanted to do that.. or change the voltage or something..

can someone please lend me their time and help me out with this one?
 
there should be a setitng in the bios to set it. Just start out at 166mhz and start OCing your HTT/FSB (whatever you want to call it).
 
yea, it means that at stock if your cpu is 200mhz than it will be a 200:166mhz ratio, or 5:6. My DFI says 1: 0.8

It goes down to "100 mhz" or 200:100 / 1:2
 
I have an awesome oc guide at home I printed out that I will look at what website I got it off of....know it was a link from hardocp.... anyway, I will get it to you, explains everything you mentioned in great detail. I love this stuff, feel free to pm me with questions.
 
Some programs that will help you out in this process are CPU-Z (for easy readouts of what you're running at any given moment), ClockGen (for tweaking in Windows), and Prime95 (to test for stability).

Honestly, the OC guide is good, so I would just find someone to help explain what it is you don't get in the guide and find out where it is in your mobo bios.

i followed those guidelines.. and i got my 3200+ up to 2.5ghz right now.. my ram is at 5:6.. the voltages are upped to 1.475 for cpu and 1.75 for ram.. im pretty happy so far and im running prime95 as we speak.. pretty decent results but i will be tweaking it up a bit when i have time in the weekend.. but i am pretty happy thusfar..

i definitely would like to upgrade my ram to something that would OC a little better than these pieces of crap.. i will probably go with 2x1gb sticks that OC better..

i kinda regret not getting the 3000+ because it has so much more room for improvement than the 3200+..

if anyone has any tips to make it a bit faster, let me know..
 
mine is @ 2.6 but I had to give it 1.65v to get it there. let us know where u end up.
 
since i have an asus a8n mobo, it wont go up to 1.65.. it tops out at 1.55.. besides, my ram sucks too much to push it that high.. i would have to relax the timing and that's a whole new subject to get into..
 
Just set a higher ram divider to avoid OC'ing your ram more. With the A64's integrated memory controller, ram dividers hardly give a performance hit.
 
hmm, just tried out playing a game (cs:s) but every five minutes it would freeze and reboot my computer.. so i backed it down to 2.4ghz and it stopped doing that.. it ran fine throughout prime95 but why would it freeze on cs? kinda gay..

so just put a lower ram divider and it wont really affect it? the ram will act to the full potential regardless? sounds like a plan.. but id like to know more info on that please..
 
While running Prime you have the CPU heating up. When you play CSS you have added heat from the video card, this could have pushed temps in the case up enough to cause instability. I havent OC'ed an A64 personally. Still running A-XP, but to my understanding ram dividers shouldnt hurt overall performance, because the memory controller is on the CPU die, instead of at the north bridge, so you have extremely low latency. Either way, your best bet is to try a higher divider, and just without changing speeds, do a couple benches with different dividers. If you're satisfied with the results, then keep working on pushing the CPU. If not, OC the ram, and play with the timings till you get something that works. Overall though, you'll probably get better performance with a ram divider and tighter timings, than oc'ed ram and loosened timings.
 
I'm currently using the 3:4 divider(150), 10:14 effective w/ 10 multiplier. So my RAM is actually only running @ 185mhz (370mhz effective). Running @ 5:6 or 216mhz w/ 2-3-2-5 timings actually made me crash once, even though it was prime stable. Anyway.... my point is, even w/ my RAM @ 370 2-3-2-5 timings, I have had no noticeable performance hit in real-world or benchmarking.
 
well, when i run prime95 @ 2.55ghz, my temps are no higher than 45c.. so i dont think im close to the 60c that would be considered hot.. should i just put the ram divider way down and just OC the cpu to 2.6ghz?

supposedly, my mobo OCs to 334 max, cpu to 264 max, and ram to 216 max.. so is my cpu considered a weaksauce cpu too? what's with the e6 and e3 venice things i hear about?
