ok so i'm having a little trouble overclocking my i7. i can't seem to set the block over 176. my ram is only 1066 mhz i think. is that what's holding me back? (176 x 6 = 1,056). 6 is the lowest memory ratio i can set (i think)

I ran into a similar problem OC'ing my 920. 200MHz worked fine but 176-180 wouldn't. I chalked it up to a bclock hole and moved on. This guide was very helpful.
 
it might give us a little more to go on if you post all the specs of your build, and the current BIOS settings. What clock is it stable at and what clock are you trying to get to? Temps?

the goal is 4.0 ghz. like i said, the highest bclock i can get to boot is 176. 176 x 20 = 3.5 ghz is the highest i've gotten to run. temps are around 70 C or so (not over 71 C that i've seen)
 
Have you tried tweaking your Vcore, chipset voltage, VTT, etc.? And what are the rest of your specs?

You should be able to set the multi to 21.
That will give you 3.7 Ghz.

i did try once, going off a guide i found online. but i didn't get it to work.

can someone tell me what they set their's to?

Well it's actually an alienware aurora (now I know what you're thinking - coulda built one cheaper - please don't nag me on this).

So I'm not sure on the mobo, but I can change most settings that i've seen elsewhere. I'll try to look up more about the ram.

It's got an i7 - 920, nvidia 260, 2x500 gb in raid 0
 
Isn't Turbo the option that ups the multi?

Yeh, my multi is set to 20 but turbo bumps it to 21.

I can tell ya I had HUGE RAM issues with my board. I only have 2 channels populated and I have this thing running 300 mhz faster than what I was able to with all 3 channels filled.

I would hope that with a premade system this would not be the case... but for giggles, take a couple sticks out and see what happens.

This is what I am currently using. I wouldn't plug these values into another system and expect it to work though.


CPU 1.35v
CPU VTT 1.3v
RAM 1.6v
IOH vCore 1.3v
BCLCK 194-210 (194 during the day, 210 at night with the window open and a big fan blowing into the system for extra points!)
Multiplier is 20+1 (+1 being Turbo mode)
2:6 RAM divider (I haven't put any time into making this 2:8)
 
How old is the computer? You might have a crappy C0 chip. Some of the C0s didn't do well. Mine would only do 3.6ghz no matter how much voltage I pumped into it.

Download CPU-Z and it will tell you what stepping you have (C0 or D0).
 
But at 2:6, wouldn't the max bclock be 177 or so?

No, memory dividers and bclk do not have anything to do with limiting one another.

I thought I was stuck at 3.67 because my ram was holding me back....followed this guide, now I'm running at 3.9, safe volts, ram oc'd even.
Follow that guide....oc'ing an i7 is a new ball of wax compared to the old days C2D/C2Q where you just bumped up FSB and Vcc and that was it.

You need to drill things down one at a time. Find your max safe bclk, then your max safe ram speed, then the final step is work on the cpu. Starting cpu first (which I did do initially), you end up with lots of problems.

My specs for reference:
21x multi x 186bclk @ 1.335 Vtt (max bclk for me @ safe volts [1.335] was 200)
ram 1333 (stock) running 2:6 divider, 1584mhz @ 1.66vdimm 9-9-9-27 2T (6x2gb dimms)
cpu running at 3906mhz (3.9ghz) @ 1.2625 Vcc (Vcore)
temps: 42c idle, 73-74c load (Prime95), 70-71c load (running -bigadv)

Everyone has their thoughts on safe ranges...however Intel max from their spec sheets is Vcc (vcore) is 1.55, max Vtt (bclk voltage/QPI) is 1.35. Vtt is a bigger 45nm killer than Vcc is. (same thing with C2D/C2Q, actually). 45nm do not like high Vtt.
 
Do you guys run your i7's with your ram voltage at 1.45 for 24/7 use? I setup mine to 1.45 and have just left it there. But i was always under the impression this was safe, correct?
 
From what I have read around the web 1.45 is probably the highest voltage you'd want to run. Both of my D0s run at 1.26v
 
well i'm still having trouble after changing the voltages. what exactly is CPU VTT? i'm not sure i have this setting.

Vtt is the same as QPI; some bios manufacturers list things under different things. :)
 
well right now here is what is working:

QPI frequency - Auto (choices: auto, 4.800GT, 6.400GT)
Memory Ratio - 6
CPU ratio - 20

CPU BClk - 175
Spread Spectrum - disabled
PCI frquency - auto (choices: auto, 37.3, 42)
PCI-E frquency - 100

dynamic CPU Vcore offset - +20mv
ddr3 memory voltage - auto
IOH voltage - 1.30V
QPI and Uncore voltage - default (choices: default, +040mv, +080mv, ..., +440mv)

what should i change?

If you have it on auto and your blck is at 2000 then your QPI is running at 7.2 at stock volt and wont be stable.

Can you set the Uncore Frequency? It should be 2x your Memory speed. So if you can set the Uncore Multiplier set it to 12, or do 2x+1 = 13.

OK, so I've got to go back to work again tonight, how long running P95 is good enough to assume a stable OC ? I don't have time right now to run around and test a lot of things so I put the voltages where they need to be for a 4Ghz OC but only upped the Bclk to 150 (3Ghz). When I get more time I'll play with the settings for a good OC but I figure I can get a gauge on temps running the voltage here (probly wont increase much if any).

So, how long P95 stable is stable enough for A3?

Depends on who you ask. Prime95 actually is not a very good indicator for how stable an OC will be for A3's or bigadv. I've had OC's go through 24 hours of p95 testing only to fail at either A3 or a bigadv. The only real way to tell is to just try it. I will generally run Linpack for 20 passes and p95 for a couple hours and then go right to an A3 and then bigadv.
 
well i upped my bclck to 178 with same settings as above, and it works! so now i'm up to 3.749 ghz! but the goal is still 4.0 ghz
