Overclocking E4400 with P35-DS3L

Hi everyone, I'm trying to overclock an E4400 with the gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L mobo.

I've got it at 2.8 right now but I'm trying to get it at 3.0mhz. I've seen some stuff out there on the interwebs on this combo but I was wondering if anyone here could walk me through it - i.e. what voltages and FSB to use. I'm alos using 4GB GSkill PC2-8500 RAM.

Any help appreciated!

Cliff notes.
Cool the MCH/Northbridge with a fan attached any way you can. Silicone Adhesive works good.

cpu mulitplier is 10, stock FSB is 200MHz. Memory is 1066 so stock memory mulitplier is 1066/400 = 2.6

disable C1E and virutalization if available. Set fan control to disabled and legacy mode (should run cpu fan at 100% all the time)

Set cpu voltage to 1.375V (assume you have a performance cooler but anyway read the link and get a temp monitoring program and stop with load temps get into the low 80's)
Set MCH voltage to second available setting above normal.
Set memory voltage to highest recommended my manuf but still under warranty.
Set memory mulitplier to 2.0 to underclock your memory - you come back later and fix that after you find your cpu OC.
Set memory performance enhance to middle setting (one better than "normal" - the name wording changed from bios to bios )
Download and burn a copy of memtest86+ which will make a boot CD so you can test your settings without risking trashing your windows install. Run the first 3 or 4 tests that take a couple of minutes and if ok carry on, if errors back up to previous settings and check if windows and apps work ok.

Go into bios with above set,

Increase FSB 30MHz and see if it will boot and run memtest without failure. If so....

increase FSB another 10MHz and retest - rinse and repeat until failure and then back off 5 MHz.

Once you find your CPU OC that works fine with windows and your games etc. and heat is not an issue, find a memory mulitplier that runns your memory as close to rated speed as you can. Sometimes you have to accept underclocking your memory some. Its just the way the number work, but CPU MHz much more powerful than memory MHz so dont worry about it.

Proceed to phase two.
Phase two is where you read everything about all your bios settings and keep reading and googling until you understand what each one does and if it would help or hinder your OC and why. At that point you dont need our help anymore.

really couldnt put it any better if you want a methodical aproach.

you should be able to get a lot more than 3 out of it if you have decent cooling.
 
Thanks Bill Parrish, I'll get started on this tonight. Reading through pages and pages on that link seems crazy, eventually I will I suppose but for now your mini-tutorial should do wonders. That's the type of thing I was looking for.

I have the cpu 2.6 right now without having changed much except disabling smart fan. I have the fan at 100% all the time now.

I would like to get this 3ghz and leave it there, if anyone has a good combo of voltages, FSB and memory mulitplier feel free to post!
 
Just a mini up-date: got around to messing around on this OC.

I have the cpu voltage at 1.375
Ram voltage at 2.2
memory mutliplier at 2.0 (so underclocking)

Now have the cpu at 2.9 - no problems with memtest and I've done a quick orthos test of an hour 0 errors and 0 warnings. The temps went as high as 55 degrees but I'd say they hovered around 47-49 most of the time. Not great but I don't feel like lapping the cooler or resetting. It was a major pain getting the fan on, I'm not sure how I'd even get at the push pins with the fan on OCZ Vendetta 2.

I know an hour ain't long but I'll bring it up to 3.0 and maybe do a test while I'm away at work tomorrow. If that goes wellThanks again.
