Overclocking disables video card

Hi I recently switched out my E4300@3.0Ghz for a Q9550. I also replaced my MSI P6N with a GA-EP45-UD3L. The problem I am having is whenever I overclock my CPU to 4.0Ghz my video card is not detected by windows. When I drop it back down to 3.8Ghz it comes back. What gives? Could this be power related?

I doubt it it power related. It is more likely that you are creating voltage instabilities throughout the MB when trying to get to 4Ghz that is causing the PCIe slot to not function properly. If you are stable at 3.8 leave there, that will give you all the speed you need.
 
First, its your stuff and do what you want, but just be aware your board is the "lite" version and does not have the beefy CPU voltage regulation circuity or the mosfet cooling of say the -UD3 or -UD3R so make sure you have a fan or some other way of hitting the components around the CPU socket with moving air.

You might try bumping this to 900mV

CPU Reference <--- AKA FSB voltage or Vtt a bump here (just one) might help



And what is your MCH voltage set at now ? If not already high, a bump there might help.

Really need a rundown on your complete MIT settings - all of them, including memory to say anything else.

I too doubt it is power supply related. You have plenty. You have got the easy bit and are now into the tweaking stage where things get tough (and IMO fun).

But really, get a spare fan on those mosfets/caps and of corse you have redone the MCH thermal compound and attached a small fan to it, right ?

You are at a 447 FSB, you have to make sure the FSB stays healthy and stable. All kinds of timing issues start to appear at high FSB. And just jumping (you didnt say so I have to guess) from 3.8 to 4.0 is not going to work for you. Testing/tweaking plan and small increases in FSB are needed. As mentioned the easy part is over.

The cpu "talks" to your video card throught the MCH and that is likely where the trouble is either the MCH or the FSB data buss between the MCH and CPU is right on the edge.

Another thing to try, under the catagory of , "it cant hurt to give it a shot" is to take the PCI-e frequency off of Auto and try setting it to 102 or 101 or 98 just to see if forcing the board to set it to a certain vaule other than the default just happens to enable circuity that is a bit more stable at high FSB.

Lots of clock skew stuff to play with too. MCH/Northbridge is where I would start.
 
Just an update. I finally got it working at 471x8.5 (4.0ghz). It runs at about 55-60 Celsius in OCCT under load. I don't have all the settings right now since I'm at work but off the top of my head I have a few..

CPU Vcore : 1.36v
MCH : 1.24
DRAM : 2.1v
PCI Clock : 900mV
