Overclocking a Q9450

Hi all,

I recently purchased (read today) a new rig. I have a P5Q Deluxe with a Q9450 and a zalman CNPS9500A with Artic Silver Ceramique and it's all going to be in a P182B case. I also have 8GB of OCZ Platinum XTC PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL5-4-4-15 so it should be able to reach the 400FSB.

My question is will I be able to break the 3.0GHZ with this rig by just increasing the FSB to 375 or 400, (8*375 = 3000 or 8 * 400 = 3200) or will I need to play with some of the other settings?

Thanks for the advice.

Very likely. I needed one Vcore bump on my Q9450 to be stable at 3.2GHz on a P5Q Pro MB.

For the P5Q MBs, you basically have three OC options

1) OC in BIOS (most options, highest OC possible, but locked - can't change on the fly)
2) OC in AI Suite (common OC options - FSB, Mux, memory voltage and freq, and PCI-e freq) and
3) in Six Engine (only FSB adjustments supported in turbo mode but you can also underclock in max power savings mode. Performance changes with the click of a mouse)

I recommend you start with Six Engine application. Go into settings and slide the turbo mode up to 15%. Run wPrime and CPU-Z. Note your FSB and Vcore. Keep raising the turbo mode slider up 1% at a time, noting FSB and Vcore, until you crash. For stable operation in turbo mode, back off the slider 1% or 2%. If this OC is good enough, then you're done. Else you can configure your BIOS or AI Suite to bump up Vcore to get you stable and at the desired FSB.

my Q9400 does 3.2 (400FSB) with no changes on anything besides FSB , Prime95 stable an all (Same chip as the 9450 but only 6mb l2)

I just got my Q9450 running at 3.2ghz stable (400x8), with a 1:1 memory divider and vcore at 1.36. I plan to back off on the vcore to bring down temps a little. It was a lot easier to OC than I expected, and I'm surprised I didn't have any prime95 errors after 8 hours running (based on previous attempts at overclocking).

Just raising vcore usually does it. Most of the time i increase FSB and then raise vcore accordingly but if i'm in a hurry i'll just bump vcore up to the safest level and raise FSB as far as it will go.

Thanks for the info everyone. As soon as I get my rig and build it, I'll let you know the results that I get.

Thanks.
