Hey, I got a gigabyte p-35 ds3l board and a e2160 intel cpu. Right now the processing speed is at the default of 1800mhz. But it varies from 1200mhz to 1800mhz. And I got a xigatech heatsink.

Anyways I tried overclocking in the past but unfortunately like i got to 2.4ghz than 3.0ghz, while raising the vcore. Think I ran prime 95 for a few hours too when doing it. But I think I might have got somewhere around 1.38 vcore or less at 3.0ghz. Anyways pc turned off like 2 or 3 times after 6-8 hours each time. And than pc stopped booting up completely. I cleared cmos a few times, and did something else. But it was weird like when it booted up, it would turn off fast, idk, but it was better when I put all settings back at default. Now I should also mention when i installed my mobo back than I didnt use standoffs, just some metal screws, some how it propped the board up enough that it worked. It's fixed now.

So I'm wondering, should I be worried about trying to overclock it again, maybe to 2.4 ghz and see how it goes? I heard you can go to 2.2 or 2.4 ghz on a e2160 without increasing the voltage. I don't want cpu to break or something or not boot up anymore ;\ Kinda paranoid about it since last time I tried to overclock, it seemed like it was dead.
 
Speedstep changes the multiplier at idle vs load, thus the variation in speed.

Did you raise the MCH voltage? Try bumping that up. Default on my mobo is 1.25V, and it's at 1.35V @380fsb. The higher the fsb, the more voltage the northbridge needs to be stable.

Also, make sure your ram isn't being clocked past its limit as you raise the FSB..

I had my e2160 running at 2.7ghz at stock voltage if I recall. But then my chip has a low VID of around 1.175V. The ability of the e2160's to overclock varies a lot and it looks like you may have one that doesn't go high w/o a lot of vcore. You should be able to get at least 2.4ghz stable, just takes some patience getting it stable.
 
I built some good friends a computer with that same motherboard and cpu combo.
An E2160 is nice and easy to overclock. I like to stick to the stock bus speeds of 266, 333, and 400 when overclocking any core2duo cpu. It's just a personal thing for me. I like to keep it similar to a stock setting in that regard. I once had an E6300 that had a top multiplier of just 7. It ran at 7 x 400 for a very long time just fine.
The E2160 should run at 266 just fine and is a nice bump from stock. Try this with no added voltage on anything. You should not need it. 9 x 266 will give you 2394 which isn't too bad.
9 x 333 for 3 Ghz is a bit of a stretch. I would not bother to push it that high. My friends combo ran that way for a while, but then one day I noticed it running slow so I checked and it had somehow reset itself to the stock 9 x 200. 9 x 266 is good enough really, especially if it's more stable and actually holds that speed for the long term.
 
Check your FSB:RAM ratio and see if the RAM Frequency reach too high value or not.

I pushed my E2160 to 2.8GHz with vcore on Auto IIRC.And i got it stable @3.4GHz with 1.42v.

what does that mean exactly? Also not sure about raising MCH voltage yet. Going to google for other people's setups with this board and MCH voltage at different cpu speeds.

Also going to attempt to o/c pc to 2.2ghz. Feel safer doing that.
