hey guys I just picked up the Asus 8800gs for my back up system $46.99 after the mir!!! couldnt pass it up. It seems to be handling things fiune at stock but I have seen it go as high as 700mhz, stock is 580mhz. ATI tool will not recognize the card so it wont let me overclock it. Mardware Monitor from cpuid doesnt "see it" either?

I have tried to use riva tuner before but it seems a little visually confusing for me.

I would like to use it but some friendly help would be appreciated.

tia!

Try the Evga overclocking tool. i think its called Evga precision or something like that.

try using speedfan.. you will see 2 core temp readings just click config and it will show you which ones ones which.. 1 will be your core temp for you cpu the other will be your gpu temp..

also 700mhz on stock cooling is probably going to be on the extreme high side for that card.. but then again i never overclocked my 8800GT with stock cooling and its basicly the same cooling setup swapped to a duorb cooler on my 8800GT 3 minutes after i opened the box from newegg.. :p but id say high 600's are a good possibility..

speedfan is reading zero celcius for the gpu =\ It recognizes the card, no temps.

Try HWmonitor perhaps? if that doesn't work, you may have a stuck sensor in your card.

yup ^ hes right.. which is going to make it much harder for overclocking.. id say rma the card.. but i dont understand why you dont get a 9600GSO or 9600GT for a few dollars more.. its just a tad slower then the 8800GT but faster then the 8800GS.. just make sure its the g94 gpu..

I already have the card so Im not changing, but pound for pound this thing pwns. HL2 100-250 fps, max aa and af @ 1440x900, Left 4 Dead maxed graphics with aa and af 75-150 fps @ 1440x900. And the card is $54 after mir and taxes!!!!

Also don't you mean the g92 gpu? Actually I may be able to return it the point of purchase.

ok I figured it out. I had not installed the asus smart software which overclocks and provides fan control, and is shows the gpu temps.

So, my next question is now that I can oc it how do I stress test it? Any reccomendations? I have used ati tool in the paste but this card is not supported.

you should still be able to use ati tool artifact scanner. Just make sure Ati tool is up to date.

Keep in mind the artifact scanner will show "good" high clocks but the card will fail in games so it is just useful as a guide. The best "test" of your OC is the actual application/games you will be running. Any sudden freezes (gpu too high) or artifacts (memory too high) will tell the tale.

lately ive noticed that overclocking and using atitool gives worse overclocks.. for me i get artifacts half way toward my max working overclock..

but theres other testing programs.. using something like furmark which will stress your gpu/shader clocks.. but theres others out there.. look in the benchmark stickly list in this section of the forum..
