Hi guys, I have my x2 3600+ OC'ed to 2.9 stable and running cool. I was just wondering what the heck is that squealing noise I hear coming from the motherboard or somewhere in my computer. I can hear it when I move my cursor across the screen. I don't hear it when it's not overclocked.

All I can do is guess so here it is.

Inductor noise. At high frequencies some inductors will vibrate so fast it sounds like a squeal. Overclocking you are pulling more power thru the onboard cpu voltage requlator circuit and I am guessing one of your filtering inductors is complaining a bit.

Here is what you can do about it.

Using a non-metalic tube of some sort, rubber tube plastic straw etc. use it like a stethoscope holding it to your ear and wave the other end around the insides of the computer. It works susprisingly well and you should be able to pin point the exact component making the sound. If its in the power supply, get a new supply or live with it, I dont want to get you killed. If you find its a donut shaped kinda thing with wires wrapped around it. You can power off the board and get some stuff called Q- dope and apply it to the outside of the "thingy" and it will probally stop the vibrations and the squealing. Well maybe.

look about 1/2 way down.

this stuff appears to be polystyrene disolved in thinner, clear nail polish might do the trick too, check the label, as long as its all plastic with no metal/metallic indegredents it should be ok to use. A thin coat over the device in all the areas you can reach may help. Or not.

hmm I just had a look at a picture of your board, My first suspect would be the upright ferrite rod with wire wrapped around it just behind the the heatpipe raidator. (looks like your board does not have any of the ferrite "donuts" I mentioned above. ) bah oh wait there is one by the memory slots. Anywho, you get the idea.

my PSU used to chirp when I had my x1900xtx installed. It was so obnoxious that I sold the card. I assumed it to be an inductor as well. If your noise is coming from the PSU, you may be able to get it replaced under warranty, provided that you are not running it over spec.

PSU would be my first guess. After that the VR's on the mobo. Either way back off your OC before you fry something. Try using a different higher quality PSU and see if it goes away. I have had some issues with the more recent truepower Antecs just up and dying or squealing then dying.

my two (liquid cooled) 1900XTs would whine like an 80mm fan when i ran 3dmark or put any substantial load on them. it is very annoying. im looking forward to getting rid of these cards as soon as i got the money to do so.

Strange.

I have a similar situation....but not exactly.

When my system is over-clocked, there's no noise.
When I test for stability using Orthos or other programs, as soon as I hit start - I get a really high-pitched squeal / whine.
It's only something that can really be heard if your ear is facing the side of the system - and as soon as you hit stop on the Load Testing - it's silent again.

Anyone else?

Capacitors can squeal as well. Press the rubber end of a pencil against the tops of them gently. If the noise stops you found the culprit.

I don't know the exact cause, but for me, it was the video card. In my old PC, the 6600gt would make a very quiet but high pitched whine when under heavy use.
