Ordering a new powersupply from newegg

[Avengeance]

Ok so I have a friend that needs a new power supply for their dell desktop. I was going to throw in one of the power supplies I have laying around but I quickly noticed that it needs to have the power cord plug in a certain spot, cant have a power switch (needs to be flush on the back) so it can fit in a certain spot.

Now my question is, are the pictures of the products on newegg exactly what you get? I am kind of worried about ordering one of these and finding out it varies a little from the picture and makes it so it doesnt work.

What do you all think? Thank you!

Well generally the pics on newegg do match what you get.

What Dell does your friend have?

I cant remember the exact model off the top of my head but I can check when I get home. For reference it needs to look something like this:

They actually mention this power supply matches most dell and hp systems so this might be the one I have to go for. I hate ordering generic brand power supplies though.

Oh just for some sort of description, its the case that opens up like a clam sort of. Here is a pic of the back of it:

So it needs to be a mATX PSU? Or will a ATX PSU fit just fine?

ATX PSU is what was in there. It just cant have the switch on the power cord has to be in a certain position or else it wont fit.

Cut a hole in the case to make it fit?

[Avengeance]

I was thinking of doing that but my friend decided against it. I think I could make it look pretty good but it would take a little while and I figure it just easier to order the right thing.

+1 for cutting a hole. you can get a decent power supply that way.

are you sure that dell will even support a regular psu? older dells and such use what seems to be regular psu's, and regular psu's will fit (and they will fit other hardware) but the pinout is completely different, and can lead to lots of dead hardware.

No a regular ATX PSU works fine. I plugged in a regular PSU without mounting it and it worked fine.

PC Power and Cooling makes replacement PSUs for those models...the picture you posted appears to be a 8200, 8400, 8450. It is 500W, but costs $50...I am guessing that is more than you want to spend.

This, I used to use a dremel to modify chassis so I could put off the shelf Power Supplies in Dell Dimensions all the time...

Yep! I think a pre-requisite to being able to post on this forum should be having dremelled at least one case!

Didn't an SNL song with Justin Timberlake state something like

Step 1: Cut a hole in a box?

That used to be the case, but for a few years now, Dell has used standard ATX units after getting railed for proprietary (and high $$$) power supplies from the media and consumers.
