So I am thinking of moving back up to a standard ATX setup (currently have a MATX setup with a 4790K) Was thinking of either the Corsair 450D or 750D. Right now I have the 350D and love the look and size. I didnt want to get a case that much bigger though so possibly the 450D falls into that space.

The next question is on the GPU front, I picked up the GTX980 from Microcenter last week and was thinking of getting a second one with SLI. Should then I just sell off my current 4760K/Z97 setup for an X99 platform (One advantage is that there is some future proof right?)

Finally the PSU front, I have an AX860i, if I do go SLI I doubt that this psu will be efficent enough for that load so was thinking of moving up to an AX1200i.

Anyhow, the question as well is that is it worth upgrading at all? Right now I game only on a 30 inch Dell (2560x1600). I do like to jack up the FPS and wanted to just have something that is good at handling that workload.

So I guess before I start to throw down some money, wanted to get everyone's advice.

The Socket 2011-3/X99 platform is only "future proof" in the sense that it's a newer platform. If you're performing a lot of multi-threaded tasks in addition to gaming, then I could see why you would make that upgrade. But if SLI gaming is your primary (or only) concern, it would be much cheaper to buy a good Z87 or Z97 board for your i5-4670K and overclock it past 4GHz.

As far as the power consumption of the GTX 980, many reviewers recommend a PSU of at least 800 watts for SLI. You should be fine with your AX860i.

The good news is that one GTX 980 can handle most games well at a 2560x1600 resolution. In most cases, depending on the game, you can easily exceed 30 frames per second on High visual settings. But without knowing the games you play, I can't tell you whether you'll need SLI sooner or later.

Games i play are: Diablo 3, Company of Heroes 2, Rome Total War 2, BF4. Plan to prep for GTA 5, the new Civilization game as well.

Yeah, I'm not seeing a concrete reason for you to go with the X99 platform. In your situation all of the extra costs for the X99 switch can be used towards a second GTX 980 now. Since you've only mentioned gaming, the X99 platform will not allow you to increase the longevity of your system by any meaningful metric.

As for whether or not you actually need SLI, I would imagine GTA V requiring a ton of GPU horsepower.

So maybe just move to a standard ATX board and case? Was thinking the 450D.

Yeah, stick to Z97 and use your i5-4670K. (I have no problem with the 450D.)

Start with one GTX 980 for now and wait for GTA V to arrive. If Battlefield 4 is the most GPU-intensive game you currently play, the good news is that one GTX 980 is more than enough.
