Apparently I don’t go to the Art Lebedev website often enough or I would have saw the Optimus Tactus keyboard concept before now. With the Maximus costing as much as $1,500, I can only imagine how much something like this would cost.

Looks alright, but i really prefer there be some kind of feeback with my typing, its hard for me to tell when typing on a touchscreen whether i have hit the key or not.

This is about like what somebody was suggesting in the other thread. Pretty much a touch screen that had a keyboard drawn on it.

Looks neat...

If it comes at a price lower and the same as a G15... i might consider it :D

Pron on your keyboard?!!

In for 2!

Yeah, I would definitely need some keystroke response. Makes you wonder why a keyboard called Tactus doesn't have any tactile response.

It's basically a keyboard-shaped touch-screen monitor that plugs into a USB port. :D

Wow looks like one step closer to star trek. :D

With all the interface and multi-touch tech coming up this is definitely on the horizon. The adoption rate may be slow though.

It's true that you lose tactile feedback from keyboards, but hey it's alot easier to clean that flat surface than a standard keyboard.

Put me down for one. hehehe...

What about having some kind of "zap" when you touch the keyboard. Not a strong one, but just something that gives you the feeling of pressing on it.

I think over time though we could learn to do w/o any feedback, I mean if you are typing and looking at the screen you see the results right away.

ahhh the modern, ULTRA widescreen answer to the touchscreen, would be more useful as a secondary controller for games/sims though, IMHO.......... imagine having the MFDs for your flight sim on this thing with virtual buttons you could actually press (and if the thing has some kind of force feedback, even better)

Man, you'll need one hell of an automatic spell correction when typing text on that thing. Pretty cool otherwise.

THIS should be the way that interface devices are heading. It should be a lot cheaper than it's going to wind up being though. Imagine how much more efficient your work flow would be if you could totally adapt almost every aspect of your interface device to fit your preferences and style of working. It's awesome.

Will the entire display/keyboard be made with OLED's? I really like OLED's, but their longevity is a concern.

It looks fantastic and now I want one...

I'll be the first to make an LCARS mod for it!

And why should it be so expensive ...we're basically talking a specialized touch screen...

This will probably be cheaper than the Optimus because it only has one screen and not 107. the problem is definitely the tactile response. It's the reason I've always had a problem with a touch screen as a keyboard.

There has to be a way to use keys to refract the images off of the lower keyboard upwards. So that you could have an Optimus with one screen.

Maybe there could be something under the touch screen that could push up to define the keys. At the very least it could have the two dashes/bumps representing the home keys (F and J on the Querty keyboard layout)

Who knows, maybe I'll get so good at typing that I will know where the keys are, just like I've gotten used to a regular keyboard.

On another note, I am an ergonomic keyboard user, so having the keyboard on a flat surface would not be something I was interested in. Maybe for a secondary keyboard somehow. Something I've always hated about laptops. Wouldn't it be cool if you had a laptop that when you opened it the keyboard raised up ergonomic?

I like this keyboard design better than the OLED based Optimus. Here's hoping this one doesn't take as long to develop as the current one has.

This keyboard reminds me so much of Tron for some reason. Reminds me of the desk in Dillingers office.

Yeah i want this keyboard. I soooooo want to make my own themes for it. Will feel wierd not having any feedback from the keys other than a small thud.

Looking at this again, yeah, you would need some killer on-the-fly spell correction software to work in tandem with that keyboard. Virtual keyboards like the one on the iPhone is only viable because of software that corrects the inevitable mistakes if you touch type very quickly.

That said, I type faster with that iPhone keyboard than I did with my old Palm keyboard. There are no physical button presses and the spellcheck and key prediction keeps up with you so you can actually be pretty sloppy with your type accuracy. If something like this came with that Optimus keyboard, then it would be amazing. If not, it will be a mess of misspellings and errors unless you like to hunt and peck while looking at the keyboard.

Can someone say Star Trek:TNG?
Every piece of dreamed up "future tech" had to have a start somewhere, this looks like it.
Good questions on the practicality of it, as touch screens tend to be a bit testy at times.

If people really wanted it to look like a regular keyboard, they could have prisms overlay ontop of the LCD. That way, it looks like individual LCD's. I don't know about most people, but I only use the tactile sense for hand placement. The pressing motion also allows me to place my hands in the right spots without pressing a key. A clear plastic overlay with raised edges to outline keys would solve the first problem. Pressure sensing, to allow for hand placement without key activation would solve the other. Then add in a calibration and learning software and it's be just as good as a regular keyboard, except cost 100x as much =P

Im gonna have to blirt out that I think Stargate has better production quality and acting than any of the Startreks had. As much as Roddenberry's vision was a good one.

Maybe they could remake all the Startrek's in Vancover?:rolleyes::p

OHHHHHH CANADIA!!!

As far as the force feedback goes, I have Alpine's top of the line touch screen in the dash of my car and it is touch sensitive. Each button actually has a different type of feel to it - it feels like you are pressing a physical button. Not exactly, but damn close. I can't figure out how it's done - there is a sensation of actually pushing in on the button.

I think it might be done electrically - either that, or with a thin depressable layer of plastic over the screen.

regardless, touch screens with force feedback are already here.

Lol. Wow, I laugh when I see these cards, and then realize that I've been using the same old "clicky" PS2 keyboard for nearly two decades and it it still works like a dream.

Sorry but I believe that is T.A.T.U. in the third screen. Optimus Fake Lesbonus.

Cool concept though, hopefully in ten years when this hit the market it will be at least half way cheap.

Definitely. I wondered if anyone else would notice.

Did anyone see the documentary on Star Trek a while back? I'm pretty sure it was called 'How William Shatner Changed the World', hosted by the man himself. They described how so many kids who grew up watching Star Trek are developing technologies influenced by the series--hell, one of the developers of the cell phone even cited the communicator as his ultimate goal for what the phone should be capable of. Anyone know if Art Lebedev was a fan of Roddenberry?

I really like what they are doing over there. can't wait until these ideas start trickling down to us mere mortals

Yeah, so, if I ever win the lottery...in spite of not paying my bad math tax.

I wonder if you could just get a large rectangular capacitive touch display and rig your own. Really, I'd be better off with just nabbing a side panel for the shiny stuff...I don't think I can give up my mechanical keys.

Optimus sapphos fraudulentus?

I'd rather not be completely dependent on software for my keyboard working.

Guess you dislike wireless keyboards too then? ;D

I remember my buddy had to plug in a seperate keyboard from his wireless one to get into the bios, so I do agree with you somewhat. I have a feeling that these keyboards would have the software build in them though as well as external modifications from the OS.

Considering the fact the the optimus maximus keyboard still isnt availible to buy and its super high 462.27 US$ price tag id say that this one isnt goin to be made till the year 2020 and at the price of a high end pc.

if you want tactictil feedback you could use a thin membrane to lay over the keyboard that has raised edges for the keys, it could even be soft so you have to press down on it in order to do a keystroke. Then when you want to changefrom the default keyboard display either swap out the membrane or remove it. Something like the Zboard only your only replacing a thin reuseable sticker.
