Optimized by AOL ;)

So its optimized to run slower, change web browser settings so that only AOL works, corrupt the registry and so on.

So fast that you can't use it. Instead of blowing up eventually, the computer will blow up when you power it on. I love AOL :D

Well I for one can't complain. When people buy things like this it just guarantees that I will continue to have people call me to fix their computer. Thats good for my wallet. 2 greatest things ever invented for me: Windows ME and anything by Compaq. ROFLMAO!

Ha. I was just going to mention Compaq for this post:

I've been inside a number of those PC's. For $299.99 they aren't actually THAT bad. Most have an MSI or Asus Micro ATX motherboard. Granted it's dated, but at least they are pretty reliable.

But the AOL software does lick the hairs off of goat balls.

if.. for some fucked up reason you already were going to pay 23.99 a month for aol for a year.. that would be a good deal.. slap in a gig of memory for $80.. or only 512 for a total of 768 if you feel like being cheap.. and it wouldn't be too bad.. but 256 on xp sucks.. not as bad as 128 though.. which i have used..

its funny shit though.. fucking tigerD

hahaha with a celeron?
you won't be able to do shit
but this is for old people that dont do shit on thieer pc except for go on google and read a fucking ebook...
its not for serious gamers or mutlitaskers...

so it might be a good deal for a 9year old kids pc....
or a first pc....

Must you use profanity? Please keep it to a minimum.

The only way this PC could be great performance-wise is if they strip XP down to the core level and put everything AOL on top. In theory, it works well. You'd pretty much have everything you'd need on an information desktop computer. But probably it fails to have any use among the general population.

i actually installed xp on a comptuer once.. and then took the memory out.. and left a 32mb stick in there.. it wouldn't even boot.. it knew somehow.. i would have tried a 64mb.. but i only had 128s and bigger...

Ok, the 'optimization' part is a little bit of a joke. However if it keeps millions of AOL users from having spyware-choked zombie computers sending us hundreds of spams - whos to say that's wrong.

Come on, you guys are being a 'little' hard on AOL. AOL is NOT my main web browser, but for me it is has some features that I like.

Consider I live outside the USA, travel frequently, and I'm American.

My e-mail access has followed me since 1997 to whatever little shit town I've moved - including Germany where I am now.

The spam filtering works really good finally. If enough people report a spame, it gets blocked from other users. That is cool.

In a hotel in Taiwan, I got my work e-mail - through AOL. I just don't know of a dialup service that spans the globe.

I'm a little homesick and want to listen to some good Alternative rock - thorugh AOL over my broadband connection.

Need a place to throw up a few megs of images to link here?

When so many of us are using computers that others have access to, having multiple logins to AOL is nice.

Every year I think about cancelling the AOL, but I keep finding reasons to hold on to it. Plus my wife and daughter like the purple background that they can select.

I am not, however, using any of the 'optimization' features :p

EDIT: By the way I am not the average soccer dad. I built, overclocked and upgraded this computer myself. I need to build a second one for the wife and kids to use AOL on - and to play that streaming music which really is my favorite feature.

Hardcore users focus on performance. AOL simply cannot provide that since it takes up 50+ mb for the single application to run. But surely with today's standard components, we can handle using AOL.

One thing I don't like about AOL (I do have an account that I never use anymore) is that they don't automatically prevent spam. I have to do it myself. Gmail does it all, in a separate folder. I also have a pager (crappy one) that is capable of reading e-mails. When I sign on, all of my AOL mail comes up, including those 70 spam mails. And since the LCD on it is only 3.5 inches, all that spam would make my pager "The Home Of Spam Device". I really do have frustration in checking my mail quick and efficient.

Teh [H]orde Pwnt Joo!

still think i have AOL 1.1 on a floppy somewhere.. was my first ISP :D now have DSL but i use the BYOA AOL for the daughters PC's and I love it.. got rid of all the IE shortcuts and whenever they wanna hop online i have no worries.. i'd never buy an AOL PC but the software comes in handy for some things.... not MUCH but for kids its well worth it...

I'd have a bunch of old AOL versions too if I didn't throw away the CD's and keep the cases for other projects ;).

yeah i keep getting those for some reason they need me to "sign back up" yet i've had the service for the girls with them for ohhhh a year now?? maybe i'll cancel and sign back up to get free months! :D

I wont lie, I kind of like AOL and I have been on a trial now for about a year..yes a year even though I have verizon. The content like movies and music and many more of the features they offer cant be beat but with that said there engineers really need to re-work and think over the application it self. It has become like virus, dumping needless apps on your C: drive and has like 5 startup programs that kill your pc if it is not fast. For someone new to the internet its great especially the new versions being that they offer built in virus and spyware protection but for vets its really a piece of shit.

Most of these things could be accomplished by registering a domain and getting a hosting company, and better served so. Try 1&1 internet. $10 a month, including 3 domains for free. That's 50 email addresses, with webmail, viruschecking on one account, TONS of web space and bandwidth. Streaming music can be had without paying for it. Dialup worldwide, probably not, but why on earth would you want to use dialup? yech. Pretty much any reputable hosting company will have similar packages and similar prices.

I was stuck with AOL on my mother's first comp. It was pretty sucky, and I hated it, but it kinda worked. I don't think i could ever go back, unless there were some really screwed up circumstances.

It's like everything that's wrong with Steam, except it infects more parts of your computer.

AIM pisses me off too, and uninstalling can be a pain as well.

On another note, I'd rather not start my children or relatives off with a dumbed down comp. It's my experience that they'll just stick with the easy thing, no matter the performance hit, and then they'll be wallowing in ignorance. It's just like ppl who complain about things on higher resolutions being "too small." They don't seem to ever want to change from something that "works" and is simple, even though something much better can exist for them, if only they work for it.

Actually, text size and resolution have nothing to do with ignorance. Just because something is more "advanced" tech does not mean that it better serves its function. Many people DO NOT LIKE small icons. I don't set my desktop up at the max resolution either. I don't have microscopes for eyeballs. I like my desktop at a comfortable 1280x1024 on a 19" CRT.

Some people like things at 640x480. That is not ignorance. They just have a different set of priorities than you do, and probably very different visual preferences/accuity. Maybe it isn't [H]ard, but so what? I have plenty of "easy" tech that I use in preference to high-tech stuff, despite the "performance hit". It doesn't break down nearly as often, and is cheaper, smaller, and uses less (or no) juice. KISS (Keep it simple, stupid). Now, obviously AOL is a POS, and it is "easy". So is my toaster, but it toasts bread just fine. I don't need to OC my toaster or watercool it, just to prove how informed I am. Most people don't either. AOL serves a function for many people, that is to turn it the computer into an appliance. I certainly don't want to use it, but using AOL doesn't make people ignorant, or even show their "ignorance". All it does is show that their priorities are elsewhere. I'd rather have them running AOL than IE over a naked broadband connection.

I hated AOL when I had it. Anyone who buys this computer is pretty much dumb as hell.

EXACTLY. People can be as stupid as they want with their own gear (god knows I make enough money off them), but the morons who run spam distribution centers on their emachines from Costco piss me off.
