Has anyone got any benchmarks on an FX chip (55 or 57) vs an OpterOwn chip with the same speed (2.6 vs 2.6)? I would like to see how they perform against each other but I dont have a FX chip to test myself :( Im not the one to accept 'their around the same speed' Uh uh, I wanna see benchmakrs, 3dmarks, fps' etc...

I don't have benchmarks but I've owned 2 FX-57's and 2 Opterons and whereas the performance is close, the FX-57 is still much better. Games feel smoother even if FPS are close and I don't know, I just like the 2.8GHz the FX-57 has stock over the 1.8-2.2GHz an opteron has stock. From my experience, much of the time the more of an overclock, the less performance per mhz. i.e. an opteron overclocked to 2.8ghz won't run as well as an fx-57 that is stock at 2.8mhz.

Uh...the CABNE Opterons [aka OpterOWNs] are from the same batch as the FX line.

Opteron @ 2.8GHz = FX-57

:)

You'd think so wouldn't you?

Sadly it's not the case. How do you not believe me, considering I've had two CABNE FX-57's, a CABNE 148 and a CAB2E (also an FX-57 core) and neither of the opterons at 2.8GHz performed as well as the FX-57 stock.

The FX's memory controllers are probably tighter. Did you run them at the same ram speeds and all|?

That's really interesting...have you run tests? Or are you basing it off of personal experience?

I'm almost positive that within a margin of +/-2%, they should perform exactly alike.

Well like I said I've had two of each and when comparing gaming, superpi/sandra/various other benches, and overall quickness at 2.8GHz, the FX-57's ruled all. I wouldn't have bought another FX-57 after having the two opterons if I didn't notice/miss the quickness that is the FX-57.

The biggest factor that brought me back to the FX-57 was the stock speed as well as the unlocked multiplier. I ran out of FSB with my opteron 144 on air, and if I ever do move to water or phase the 9x multi just wouldn't cut it.

the fx-57 might have a better memory controller, but other than that, they are the exact same proc with a different name. difference between the two should not be noticeable in real-world apps.

just pointing that out...

look people. I've owned both, 2 of each, and run all 4 at the same speed (stock FX-57 speed) and trust me, if there wasn't a noticeable difference in smoothness and stability, I would not have an FX-57 instead of the opterons now. That is the end of my input unless you have a specific thing to ask me.

not trying to flame or offend you guy. just saying on paper they are the exact same processor. in any case, anyone thinking of buying the opteron instead, would be doing so to save some coin, i assume. putting cost into the equation I would think you would agree the fx-57 is not 500.00 smoother. again, really just trying to be a help not a nuisance. :)

I have a specific thing to ask...can you give steppings? Are they all from the same week?

We don't believe you because there is no solid evidence.

Now I would think an Opteron at FX speeds would actually be slightly faster.
figuring that a FX-57 @ 2.8Ghz with ram at 200 vs an Opteron 146 @ 2.8 with ram at 280mhz. You'd think that the Opteron would have more potential speed as the ram is moving faster.

Doesn't matter, the FX can run that ram speed too.

Can run much faster than 2.8 as well. But since the original poster was talking about the FX at stock speeds.

maybe it "feels" faster cuz its 3X the price... Your brain can play alot of tricks on you, especially when $ is involved.

QFT.

My X2 4800+ @2.8 performs much better than my "old" FX57 @3.0, not to mention with the X2 I have two CPU's :)

FX57's a beast with PhaseCooling, anything less than that makes no sense for that CPU.

Don't you just love being able to say "Oh, you have an FX-57? Well, I have two."

I have yet to meet someone to say it to though :(

No stepping will help an FX beat an Opteron by a tangible amount. They are the same thing.

You have in your sig that you are using watercooling on your FX.
:p

Ya that's why I'm stating the facts... I had the FX57 watercooled... not a smart idea.... I've replaced the CPU and a few other things and I'm happy with my X2 4800+ :)

I do have to update my signature.

Again, show us some numbers, run some benchmarks, and we'll happily believe you. Until then, my Axp 1700+ felt faster at 1.9ghz than my xp2600-m at 2.5ghz.

But I have yet to see a Opteron Hit 4ghz+. FX57's have. In fact several people I know personally have. and as fars as benchmarks The FX57's still own any other AMD cpu out there now. Look at the Orb or at The world record Super Pi times or even things like PC mark. The opterons nor any other AMD CPU hold those standings against FX57. So still hands down it say that FX57 is still the heavyweight king of the world in AMD CPU. I may have not posted any Benchmarks here but if you all just take the time to look at what i have mentioned its public knowledge and pretty easily found. The benchmarks allready exist and the proof is in.

some good points, but I will say no fx is yet dual core... so I do not agree that it is king... at least not of anything but retail price tag. :) not to say an fx of 4ghz wouldn't own anything out there right now, b/c it certainly would.... but for the long haul, stability, and most importantly value... fx is damn cool but won't see my dollar anytime soon.... although i may envy those who have one :)

The only problem with the whole DUAL core thing at this moment is there is absoultly NO real benifit by going that way yet. It will take Tons of programers and code writters to rewirte Apps games and all software including drivers and the like to even get close to making any real performance difference with 2 or more cores over their single core brothers. Right now a person with a dual core 4800 is only really reaping single core benchmarking and performance. SO I still say FX57 IS RIGHT NOW the king for that very reason. Not just of price tag but of performance. And dont forget FX60 dual core FX cpu right around the corner.

well, faster or not..I multitask too much to stick with a single core CPU, no benefit in gaming or not.
.3fps in Q4 is not worth more than being able to encode a movie, burning a DL DVD, or any other CPU intensive task while doing other tasks at the same time.

Without showing definitive benchmarks comparing your Opterons and FX chips, you're not really proving anything. Just saying it "felt" snappier and saying it did better in SuperPI doesn't quite cut it, especially in a tech forum.

True, the HTT variables at a 9x multiplier compared to a 14x mulitplier running @ 2.8GHz might do weird things, but the way things line up @ 2.8GHz on my 144, DDR400 is also there at the same pace. The divider on the memory would be the only detriment I could think of since it wouldn't be on a 1:1, but for this chip costing less than 1/8th the price of an FX-57, I'll take that. Hell, for the price I paid I'll take a 1GHz overclock on stock volts w/ a meg of cache.

Either way, without benchmarks, this thread is retardedly worthless.

OPP's 154 and my FX57...both @ -90C...See the vcore..

Man, enough w/ this 'feeling' crap. You know, my right arm feels better than my left but that means jack shit in this forum, am i correct? We need to see proof of benchmarks rather than 'feelings' else it doesnt mean jack. I get enough 'feelings' crap from my g/f....I really dont want to deal with it in this forum talking about processors.

Hahahaha QFT!!

Finally, word from someone around here with both parts to compare. And he doesn't need to do exact settings. If you look, with a few less MHz he got a lower SuperPI time, which can be attributed to memory timings or other optimizations. As you can tell, they're the same god damn thing.

Sounds like someone doesn't know how to configure their Opteron, or doesn't actually own both parts and is just looking to sound important. But hey, that's just my opinion....it's quite possible someone with a NaMe LiKe ThiS WouLd BuY $1,000 CoMpuTeR pArTs!

Strange, my board can run upwards of 400MHz stable, with a screenshot of over 495MHz on the HTT when 312MHz = 2.8, so I'm not sure how you "ran out" of HTT, unless you match up FX-57's with ASRock boards. Hell, even 334MHz = 3GHz, which is probably around where you'd run outta room on air if you got that far...still 66Mhz left at least there if 400 was your HTT cap.

Full Folding Ahead!

I'm sorry but could that statement be more false. In certain aplications dual cores procs make a huge difference:

Here is the proof:
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/200508011/athlon_64_x2_3800-09.html

I do lots of video encoding and as you can see even my lowly budget 3800X2 beats the mighty FX57 by a confortable margin. Furthermore my entire computer usage is far smoother because there are no more hickups during multitasking (i'm sure the other multicore owners will know exactly what I'm refering to;)).

So how can you say "there is absoultly NO real benifit by going that way yet"???
