I have heard a lot of crap regarding ATI drivers. All that I know is I havn't had any problems with either my 1950xt or my 4870.

Agreed. I do not see a way to update the thread with poll buttons other than deleting the thread.

It's great that this forum exists for hardware enthusiasts and that is the reason opinions in this forum have valuable information to me. Thank you. (I gave up deleting the thread. How it is now will have to suffice. Sorry SonDa5).

I experimented with an ATi card before (3850HD) with little success due to driver issues with my favorite game. I would like to see if driver issues still persist enough to wait longer for my next attempt at an ATi card (The 4890 series looks INTERESTING).
 
i think many people with driver problems are people that didnt uninstall the previous ones correctly.
 
I prefer ATI drivers far more then Nvidia drivers, however I can only speak of evga's drivers being absolute shit all the time.

ATI is like the Logitech of drivers, they work great!
 
I don't have any major problem with my driver, when I said major, something that I can't troubleshoot.
 
Don't take my input as gospel but

I had an x1900 a few years ago. Drivers were supurb.

I had a 4870 (back in the summer), the drivers were not up to par.

I've found very few issues with nvidia drivers over the past couple of years. Most could be fixed just by going back to another or an older version until they got the bugs worked out.
 
nvidias drivers used to be crap but they've gotten better, ATI ive never had a problem full stop. lately ive been using crossfire and sli on my x58 and no problems with either.
 
All I know is Catalyst 9.3 will not work with Arcsoft Totalmedia Theatre for BR, but the old 8.12 or whatever does.

And this old one has had some VPU errors. So I wish 9.3 worked with Blu-Ray, something about video overlay.

I wholeheardedly agree with you. I use driversweeper(changed to drivercleaner) with all of my driver changes.

There are many of use who install right on top of and have zero issues as well. The installer does an uninstall before upgrading anyway.
 
I use driver sweeper, crap cleaner (CC), I do this in the SAFE mode. I go into REGEDIT and destroy anything ATI related.

I enjoy doing it. I like having a clean install. Fresh new driver. Many say it's unnecessary but I can count on the performance by doing this.

Also in XP show hidden files in user folders for application settings. ATI has a few folders there ACE settings. Get rid of them.

I do.

You don't have to do all this but it works for me.

I do the same thing with the NVIDIA drivers on my notebook.
 
I have a 4870X2 and I've been pretty disappointed with ATI's drivers. Sorry. :(

I agree, I have 2 4850's and now a 4870X2, and the drivers were fine for the 4850's, but I'm having all sorts of trouble with the 4870X2. Yes, this is on completely fresh installs too. I've tried everything in the book to get it to work well, but it just doesn't happen.
 
each side has it's share of problems, always had, and always will, some will say ATI drivers, suck, others will say NVIDIA drivers suck, most people say it cause someone else said it, most problems can be easily resolved if some patience is used for either side.
 
i moved to ATI camp with my purchase of a 4870 1gb. haven't had a single problem with it's driver. been using nvidia card before it and didn't have any problem with them either. i guess i am just the lucky one :D
 
ATI makes great hardware and the drivers have a lot of potential....but they do need to be open to the enthusiast community for wider testing.There is just too much hit-or miss right now with their drivers. I've actually stop recommending them to my clients for anything except single card solutions. It's just too much of a gamble. If you look at the sheer number of complaints for any given videocard, you'll see that ATI has way more. Is it bad hardware and drivers? NO. It's the lack of a wider database of reported problems and compatibility prior to driver releases.
 
How often do you see these questions being asked, anecdotal evidence means shit.

Hell i will wait for someone to post the already very old microsoft report on driver problems in vista, or that other site which keeps an up todate record of what driver bugs are still not sorted.
 
I have had good times and bad with both Ati and Nv drivers. Much more good than bad where a single GPU is involved.

Both companies' multi gpu drivers still remind me of ATI drivers prior to the 9700pro era.
 
If you have a negative opinion you should state your problem and if you're on a 64 bit OS, still on AGP, or using a multi-GPU card or setup. ATI could use that feedback.


Positive here ever since the day they changed it so that CCC took seconds and not minutes to respond to rightclicks/activations. Other companies can learn from their advanced UI and I'll like other companies better.

Old Nvidia drivers used to give me that error message when trying to play a DVD movie. Has something to do with copy protection of the movie. I used to just play it with VLC instead as that bypasses copy protection.

I have no issues with ATI drivers and the 9.3 are good IMO. But then we don't all run the same software and games so YMMV with any video driver from any company.
 
I know problems exist, I don't pretend that all the problems (definitely plenty though) are related to user error.

However, I have never had a driver problem with ATI (or Nvidia for that matter), with any card or OS (final releases of windows) ever. I have had video cards dating back to ~1998 (worth mentioning or Nvidia/ATI based anyway).

I have had some probelms with a game here or there, but it was because of a game coming out after the driver, and both companies always released a hotfix or fixed it in the next driver set. Could they use more work? Of course, but they also have a lot to keep up with between video card refresh cycles, OS releases and service packs and updates, and constant releases of new games and engines. They will never be perfect, it is impossible.
 
I've never had any issues with ATi's drivers.

Just upgraded to 9.4. Hoping the positive trend continues.
 
I had issues with running 4850's in crossfire with vista 64, they've been great otherwise running a single card.
 
Kind of interesting results so far with 2 "camps" forming opinions. One camp that represents 2 gpu cards (4870x2) are generally negative and the single gpu card camp saying they are happy.
 
I've been using ATi since the 9700PRO and never had a single issue with them, some minor ones like FSAA levels not applying in a game or the MOM crash after using AVIVO which is already documented, but my experience has been great.
 
Ati Releases Non-beta drivers every month.

Nvidia does not.

Although ATI has dropped the ball in the past with drivers, They REALLLY worked at making solid Windows Certified drivers after the fiasco back in the day.

I would gladly take monthly Legit drivers > monthly beta drivers
 
well I used an ATI card for a few months and they obviously couldnt figure out how to put all the fences in Clear Sky. after the 3rd driver update and no fix I said screw it and bought an Nvidia card. if Clear Sky was a more popular game then maybe ATI would have fixed it. to let 3 sets of drivers get released with a huge rendering issue is fucking ridiculous.
 
I've never had a problem with ATI's drivers. I can't say the same for nVidia's.
 
If you are on Vista 64 and having problems, it has a habit of installing the vga drivers automatically. When updating Catalyst make sure Device Manager is still not pointing to the old files (the one that gets decompressed from the Catalyst exe) which happens in Vista frequently.

The two above are the only 2 things I notice with corrupt installs/uninstalls everything else has been working flawlessly since I got my 4870x2 back in August.

Well to try and even things out i will say that i have had very few problems with my x2.
 
I are in 4870x2 camp and very happy. My fps camping is in tents.
