Gaming, web browsing, microsoft office.

500GB seagate HD, DVD-RW drive, both less then 3 months old, and a TT Armor case.

lightly maybe.

current moniter has a native resolution of 1440 x 900, occasionally connect to 42" LCD

Try Tom's Hardware. They have some nice guides on building PCs for any budget. Search Newegg for the parts.

The biggest problem with Tom's is that they usually recommend hard drives, PSUs and cases that are not the best values. The guides there actually recommend PSUs that are relatively crappy by [H] standards for the prices that they sell for, and also recommend cases that are realtively cramped on the inside. Plus, it falls victim to the Black marketing hype: That 640GB WD Black that's recommended in one of the guides is about the same speed (sequential transfer-speed-wise) as the unspectacular-performing (by current standards) 1TB WD1001FALS.
