In the next month or so, I'm building a new machine for a friend of mine, but I'm unsure as to what CPU I should order for him. Money isn't an object, so he's getting either the FX51 or 3.4 EE...or Opterons...or two...who knows...

Anyway, since money isn't an issue, what CPU should I order?

If money isn't the object, than I'd go for some Dual Opteron 246 or 248.

The 248's are a little pricey for the speed bump, though.

Opterons, two of them if you have the budget. The FX and EE cost much more for a small boost in performance.

I'd only consider the opterons, although those can get pretty pricey too. I'd go for a P4EE, but it's a little too pricey (I still can't see how Maximum PC can recommend it as the top proc, seeing how it's $1000).

Is there any difference between the 148 and 248 other than SMP?
I mean, they are the same speed and everything, so there shouldn't be...

Screw that. Get a 3400+ and be done with it. As his friend, you shouldn't let him get screwed by the high prices of the FX and Extreme Edition series. The 3400+ offers very, very similar performance for at least $300 less. Don't get him an Opteron system unless he needs them--you would know if he did.

I'm with Xonik on this one. Dual procs are useless to most people. The P4EEE is priced ridiculously.

The fact that the guy has money doesn't mean you need to waste it on stuff that's not a good deal for him.

Unless your most rigorous tasks are extremely bandwidth intensive but not particularly latency sensitive, the 3400+ is almost unbeatable, especially for the price.

Some excellent advice in the last few posts. I don't think the FX-51 should ever be considered, especially since if you look at benchmarks (like in the recent Maximum PC), the Athlon 3400+ matches or beats the FX-51 in their benchmarks, despite not using dual channel.

P4EE - don't buy it for the slight performance increase. The price difference between it and the 'poor man's' P4 Northwoods clearly puts this into the zone of "CPUs to brag about when you get 15 more frames in a game."

You could take the difference between the regular Northwoods or the Athlon 64 between them and the FX/Opterons/P4EEs and buy a gig of RAM and probably a 9800 Pro, or a 9800XT or whatever.
