operating temp for 3800 x2?

It will vary depending on the heatsink used. I dunno how that would be for a stock heatsink, assuming that's what you're using. I have a Zalman CNPS7700Cu on mine, and it idles at about 30C, with load hitting between 36C-38C.

yes I'm on the orginal hsf, that thing is hard to put on.. currently under just bios its sitting at 48deg.

I've got a x2 4200 idling at 49C right now as well.

thanks now I need to figure out why my computer shuts off itself. even while It's trying to install xp....

My 3800 x2 idles at around 30c at stock speeds, full load both cores roughly 38c (again, on stock speeds). At 2.6ghz x 2, it idles around 38c. Just some numbers for ya :)

are you on the orginal heatsink fan?

Must be some INCREDIBLY cool ambient air you have there, or a misreporting sensor...or watercooled....

I idle at 30c +/- 1 degree, and load up to 48c average, using the system below in my sig...oh yeah, those temps are the overclocked temps, stock temps, what are those, my cpu never runs stock clocks :p

Okay so my temperatures are perfectly normal? I was a little worried about them and decided to buy this new HSF. any thoughts? From some reivews I've read it was better than the zalman hsf

A64 3800+ x2 processor 2.0GHz @ 2.5GHz, with an SI-120 HSF
idles at 26C
under full load 37C

Personally, I think your temps are high and it might be overheating and shutting off.

Are there any tricks to getting that HSF on and off?? From what my buddy told me, it's a HUGE pain in the ass.... And i've got to do mine next week!

Its not the stock heatsink/fan, might make more sense now eh?

I just put mine together yesterday and I thought it was pretty easy. Definitley better than the old method with a screwdriver and some praying :)

It is late, but if you are around 70 C at load than I would worry. I had a XP2200 Tbred that ran at 60 C for years. Despite how many heatsinks I tried it still ran around 55 C - 60 C. People have a misconception with heat. If you are not overclocking you should really only worry about heat if you are getting lock ups etc.

Yep, most are too anal about temps. Look at it this way....AMD specs my X2 for a max temp of 67c....and at that temp it is designed to last for years. Think of how hot those OEM boxes run, being so silent and low airflow in a cramped case. And they run for years.

My X2 runs at 48c to 52c 24/7 because it Folds when I am not gaming or video encoding. I have even ran it at 60c for days at a time before I had this current cooler. It never crashed, never balked. I broke in my AS5 by cutting off the cpu fan so the temp hit 65c....several times...I don't worry if it hits 52c or even 55c.....I live in a hot ass climate during our 100f summers, even inside it gets kinda warm unless you want $500 cooling bills....

Overclocking may take a few degrees off of your max temp spec, but basically, if you are well within the limits of your particular chips max temp, then you have nothing to worry about.

Plus lots of people have misreporting temp sensors (very common) and trust me, anything putting out over 100w of power is not going to run at 40c all the time unless you have very col ambient air conditions.

Unless I missed something, I thought he said 47C was his Idle bios temp.

No I think you are right, but in BIOS the cpu is not running any of the HLT commands and runs much warmer than it does sitting idle on the desktop...my own rigs reports 42c to 44c in the BIOS just sitting there....which coincidentally is my load temp in windows running just a single core....

after leaving it in bios for longer, it hit a top temp of 49deg. anyone know of a good program to monitor temps in windows? this ecs motherboard does not have any ultilites.

wow some of you have some amazing temps on air.. where do you live.. in southern cali on cold days (65 -70 ambient) i get the lowest 35C idle on my 3800+ oced to 2.6

Well, for one, I'm not sure the DFI temps are accurately reported. I don't have another way of testing though so that's just speculation on my part. I'm probably running closer to 45C under load than 38C I would guess based on what I've read.

A lot of it has to do with voltage. X2's heat up quick with extra voltage. Even in my setup 1.5V will run 10C hotter than 1.4V at the same speed.

besides the 70 dollars hsf, i have excellent case ventilation, which is why my temps are so low. the only downside is that my computer is a little on the noisy side, but i've gotten use to it.

I live in Austin, TX. I am currently using the antec p180 case with both doors open

If you're really worried about heat and are only going run stock or just a little further from home, just get some new thermal paste. You might have buggered the paste installing it.
