Does Opera has built in extension dictionary like Firefox does? Thanks

If you want to look up the definition of a word, double-left-click the word and then click 'dictionary' or highlight the word, right-click on it and click 'dictionary'.

You can also type, g define word in the address field and press enter.

You can also add your customized search to search.ini. Then you could type for example d word to lookup the word at dictionary.com.

You'd add the following to search.ini and restart Opera so it'll recognize the new entry.

[Search Engine 33]
Name=Dictionary
URL=http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=%s
Key=d

(search.ini is located in your profile directory. help->'about opera' will show you where your profile directory is at)

Also, read about the dictionary search extension equivalent for Opera

Opera doesn't really have extensions, but Opera supports user javascript. See http://userjs.org/

Whenever I download something and a new page automatic pop up and it automatically deletes my old webpage(the one I was looking at). How do I prevent it from doing that? I want it to function like firefox where it pops up a small screen with the status instead of taking up the whole browser and taking over browser. Thanks

tools -> preferences -> advanced -> browsing

uncheck "reuse existing page".

Then, set the "new pages" drowdown to how you like.

Also, tools -> preferences -> advanced -> content -> 'javascript options' will allow you to control whether popups can be sized or not and also what else they can do.

The "reuse existing page" setting being checked is something silly that we have been trying to get them to change, but they do it because "reuse page" is the default value in IE.

Just remember, the great thing about Opera is that unlike Firefox, each page in Opera can be minimized, maximized/restored *inside* the main window. Also, all the pages in the main window can be tiled or cascaded. If you didn't know you could do that, goto tools -> preferences -> general and uncheck "show close button on each tab" and make sure that "open pages in tabs" is checked.

In Firefox, the size of the tabbed window is determined by the size of the main window. In Opera, tabbed windows are sized independently and only limited by the size of the main window. Also, in Opera, if you don't have the main window full size, you can drag a tab off the main window and it will detach itself and become its own window.

That didn't work.

Maybe I misinterpreted.

When you click on a link to an exe for example, what happens?

When I click on a link to an exe for example, the dialog pops up asking me where I want to save the file to. Then, once I choose, the transfers tab opens up and Opera focuses on the transfers tab, but I can just left-click on the transfers tab to bring focus back to the page I was on. Or, if you want transfers to open in the background, you can set it to do so.

ctrl+alt+t -> view - > check "show transfers in background when starting" or check "never show transfers when starting".

If that still doesn't help, show me a link where it does it. You might have a file type misconfigured.

I may be wrong here, but do you use tabs in Firefox, or do you use windows? Because Opera uses tabs by default, and making new windows is actually only good if you have tons of pages open at one time (like me). Opera will pop up the Transfers TAB automatically when you start a download, unless you disable that feature. Also, make sure that View -> Toolbars -> Page Bar is checked. Could be that it somehow went away.

When I click on a link, the new link will automatically take over the old page. And usually when I use Firefox, I use open links in different application in a new window and that's what I want Opera to do.

left-click = open in the current page unless the link has a target attribute that tells Opera to do other wise. right-click -> open to override targets that tell Opera to open in a new page.

midde-click = open new tab in background. shift+middle-click to configure.

shift+left-click = open new tab in foreground.
ctrl+shift+left-click = open new tab in background

right-click and hold + drag down on a link = open new tab in foreground.
right-click and hold + drag down + drag up on a link = open new tab in background

Opera opens external links in a new tab in the newest window unless the javascript console window is open and focus or you have "reuse existing page set".If you have tools -> preferences -> general -> "open pages in tabs" unchecked, Opera should open a new window unless "reuse existing page" is set.

Now, if you click on a link to a file with a certain extension and you want to it to show a dialog and it isn't, gotot tools -> preferences -> advanced -> downloads -> uncheck "hide file types opened with Opera" -> type the extension in the quick find box -> select the mime type for the extension -> click edit -> set it to "show dialog".

Assuming everything's configured properly, the links your are clicking might have target = "_self" set on them. If that is so, you can go to userjs.org and download a target remover script or you can just use one of the many ways I listed above to open a link in a new tab.

Have a page with a link that does it?
