You have to remember that you’re not paranoid if someone is actually out to get you. If you have the feeling that you are being followed more and more around the Internet this year, it wouldn’t be paranoia, it would be a fact. Krux Digital analyzed Internet publishers tracking over a year’s span and came up with some pretty disturbing facts.

The biggest culprits behind this tracking are ad networks that not only drop tracking cookies on your hard drive, but also “usher in” other third-party trackers to drop even more cookies.

Well at the very least one of the first things I change on browser settings is not to accept third party cookies

then of course delete all after closing browser

The way I have always formulated that is "just because you are paranoid does not mean they are not watching you"

I am liking the "ghostery" add on to firefox myself

Too bad that breaks a lot of sites. Would be awesome if Firefox had an option to accept 3rd party cookies but make them expire next session. You can make cookies expire next session, but it makes ALL cookies expire within next session meaning you have to log back into everything all the time.

For the longest time I did not run adblock, but I gave in and recently installed it. Part of the reason is because flash locks up my browser and there are too many flash ads now, and the other reason is the tracking cookies.

I've never had a problem with any site with 3rd party cookies disabled. Do you have any examples?

I have Waterfox set to block third party cookies and delete all cookies on exit except the ones I specify for my "usual" sites that need them (like for staying logged into the forums etc.). I also make sure I close my browser completely before and after venturing into unknown territory.

They can track me all they want but I'm going to disappear from their radar pretty damn fast. Dirty rotten sons o' bitches...

Don't install Flash and throw as many advertiser domains into your restricted sites list (in IE anyway). Not only does the system load pages a lot more quickly, lots of ads simply never show up. Once in a while I go clean out my web cache and load one of my usual pages at a time then check the cache folder to make sure that there isn't anything new to add to my restricted sites list. Of course, it's not foolproof, but it works pretty well even if you can live without watching stupid YouTube videos and it makes computers in the 500 MHz - 1 GHz Pentium 3 range more useful online.

I've seen certain sites refuse to load, I can't recall any specific ones. I do recall some Facebook stuff on certain sites acting really weird if third party cookies are turned off as well. Normally not a huge deal though.

I started using, Do Not Track Plus, when I gave my phone # @ a store and when I arrived home I wound up getting offers for similar or related items that I had just purchased in my email inbox.... grrr

say, i like the idea of clearing all cookies but is there a way (ie: an extension) to keep the cookies necessary to stay logged in at websites?

Keep Flash and just install NoScript for object control. Much easier to manage, more secure, and has the effect you're looking for.

The other adverse effect of Flash still exists if it's installed. My whole web browsing experience is miserably slow on all but one of the computers I own. I'm happy to do without it, but for people who still want to keep it, that's probably a great idea!
