Interesting one day notes:

I installed a Diamond 6970 from Newegg yesterday, after having to upgrade my PSU to a noname 1100w from pcdirect.com (local retail shop for 3btech.net) since the TT psu only had 6 pins and a 6pin to 8pin adapter wouldn't let my GAEX58UD3R startup....really wants those grounds or third +12v line that isn't on my psu 6pin.

Had an ATI 4870 1GB since they came out and Windows 7 rated my original as 7.7 on the GPU score. After installing the 6970 and updating to 10.12 from 10.11 my score went down to 6.6 GPU score....

Second, the 6970 seems to get bogged down akin to a memory leak after a multi-hour session of gaming. Going into CCC and changing the overall graphics settings high to low and back again seemed to take care of the display lag. I'm sure this is a driver issue with Black Ops or WoW texture as those were games I played.

Overall though, it's a wonderful card and much faster than I expected.

OP, thats strange about the WEI. I just ran mine after seeing this thread, my single 6950 just scored 7.9 in the graphics departments. I played L4D2 last night for a few hours without a single hiccup. Maybe some others can chime in and help!

You note using 10.12's, are you using the 10.12a hotfix? That is the version people should be using, it includes 6950/6970 support.
 
Is it just possible that you ran WEI when you first got the 4870/WIndows 7 and never again til now? I doubt if you put the 4870 back in, that it would get that score again.
 
Make sure you don't have windows media player loaded at all or any sort of video. Having a video running anywhere makes the core downclock itself even if the video is minimized. Also I'd suggest a restart of windows after installing any drivers.
 
The 7.7 WEI for your 4870 was a mistake and was not accurate in any way whatsoever.
 
WEI is screwed up. My 6970 does score a 7.9 but my SSD for example only scores a 5.9.
 
I got a 7.6 from a 4870 512mb with a decent overclock. Perhaps he had an extreme overclock?

My 6970 scores a 7.9, and I am using the 10.12a drivers. OP, you need to use the hotfix drivers...the 10.12 available in the normal download section do not offer 69** support. Go here.
 
The WEI is a good idea but a bad implementation IMO. Basing your overall WEI on the lowest score you have (usually the HDD) does not represent the computer's overall capability in the least.

For the record, my 6970 scores 7.9.
 
Install an SSD, and you'll soon realize just how much that hard drive score is holding you back. My 775 rig feels like a rocket ship with an SSD used as a windows drive. I was running a pair of Raptors in raid 0 before, and the first power up was an eye opening experience.

But I do see your point. If your using the PC as a workstation, there is no sense in giving it a low rating based on a graphics score...when all you're likely doing is 2d stuff. There should be a way for the end user to select their PC "category", and as such get a tailored score. This score can then be used as their marketing device, being printed on software packaging letting the user know if their PC will run it or not. Unfortunately, I think they've abandoned the initial idea to do just that...and instead the WEI is just there to quantify PC upgrades for the laymen. "New PC got a "6.0"....it must be better!"
