I'm not to sure this is where this post belongs, if not please point me in the right direction. I was actually surprised there doesn't seem to be a forum for home automation and media rooms.

I want to set up something like nComputing, EVGA's Portal Zero or even go software with something like SoftXpand in order to have the basement computer:

1- Run a desktop in the wife's office (she runs a news magazine)
2- Run XBMC/Kodi in the living-room and bedroom
3- Run a desktop in the kitchen
4- Run a desktop in my son's room

SoftXpand claims I can actually game with my son using their software. I have my doubts but this would be a very nice feature if possible. Please keep in mind I have zero experience with anything more than a simple VMware setup and even then I could never get the network up correctly.

This is really so I can justify having a machine good enough to game at home. I already have two at work and a chrome stick pretty much covers everything else from the above list.
 
From what I could pull from the softxpand site, it looks like two to four users can share a single PC. What it does not say is how you plan to plug in four monitors, four keyboards and four mice to one physical case. With your example, running all three cable fifty feet or more, through the walls, might not work for this case.

The whole idea of shared resources boils down to one issue, who is going to sacrifice performance so others can use them? This leads to shuttering movies while you are gaming or the wife saying her text editor is slow because someone is watching a flash video in the kitchen. In most cases, you can throw more hardware at the issue. SSD raid to keep up with IO needs. Multiple high end video cards to process HD movies and your game at the same time. Then expensive cable repeaters to send HD video and sound out and keyboard and mouse in.

Citrix Xen and VMWare VDI do these virtual desktop things but to get gaming performance it requires expensive server class video cards. HyperV could get you close to what you want if you had small thin clients at every monitor. A simple intel NUC or android device that can run Remote Desktop could work well if you use it only for surfing and text editing. Then, keep the gaming local to the core desktop.

Microsoft licensing gets expensive if you want to run all of this legit.
Unfortunately, until someone makes an inexpensive hypervisor that can virtualized a cheap video card, sharing "gamer quality" video is still a futures wish.

You can use pcoip to game a bit, but not really with a vm, I've used the computing devices (l300) and they worked good for office/light use, I haven't used that type of devices on win 7
(but I do use pcoip for video editing where the user is in CA and the PC is in CT, with only a slight lag)

- Simple HDD its enough, SSD need if 4 or more need play at the same time or you try run wery dificult game like GTA 5 or battlefield 4 (just for loading fast..)

- i think you joke right now :) HIGH END? :) i use ONE 660GTX for 4 workstation 3 play game 4 watch movie from browser 1080p ..and nobody hawe even 1 drop of fps

How are you passing the GTX660 through? I thought it required a proper workstation card (Aka Tesla/Grid/K series)
