Hey,
I'll try to make it short, I want to buy a brand new PC and I can't decide which way to go !!!
My main uses of the PC are surfing the net, mp3 and video ( not encoding anything ), editing pictures as a hobby (with pictureIt!, Photoshop etc.) and of course, playing games ( like Max Payne, Hitman, F.E.A.R and racing games ), now, I'm NOT a game freak and I hardley play once or twice a week but I'm using the pictures editors almost every day !
What I realy want from my PC is to be very fast while browsing my hard drive and doing other stuff at the same time ( multitasking - like editing a picture and beeing able to open 5 other folders on my HD fast at the same time while surfing the net at almost full speed...!!! ), I want it to support the latest games and thats about it.
I'm having troubles deciding eather to go with the AMD X2 4400 or one of the Intel's P4EE series !!!! I checked compatabilities with motherboards and found out that AMD do not support DDR2 while Intel do, to be more specific, I found a Gigabyte mobo for P4EE that support 4 PCI-E ( like 1GB of graphic ) with DDR2 at around 600mhz while AMD has "only" the regular SLI with DDR 400mhz....So, is it smart to buy a computer now, with AMD X2 4400 with mobo that support the old DDR 400mhz or should I go with Intel P4EE considering the fact that both AMD and Intel are going to come out with a brand new CPU's soon..??
Does going with DDR mobo will give me segnificantly less speed then the DDR2 ??
PLEASE HELP !!!! I always had Intel P4 and I wanted to try the AMDs CPUs but I don't know if it is smart to spend like $500 only on a CPU, and buying a DDR mobo because I feel it will be disadvantage...
Does DDR2 is segnificantly better then the old DDR ?!!!!
Well, it came out very long....but please, help me out here and I will also appreciate if you could recommand a mobo that will be the best for my needs...
Thanks !!!!

AMD all the way, as far as games as we all know there is no comparison. Furthermore you are interested in photoshop performance where again the amd X2s shine. Take a look in this thread at the X2 performance in photoshop (its excellent). http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=926660

From my own experience my 3800X2 has been more that exemplary. Tackles video encoding and photo editing like a champ, performs amazing feats of multitasking like without breaking a sweat and hadles gaming with aplomb. (and yes i am madly in love with it;) )

As far as memory is concerned DDR400 is not yet really bottleneck for AMD systems so DDR2 will do nothing for performance therefore not required.

You might also want to look into those new Opteron dual cores that are great overclockers... they're also cheaper than the X2 3800+

If you want to go the P4 route, I guess HyperThreading will help you a lot, but I'd go with a Dual Core AMD chip. Most likely 3800+ or Opteron 165.

As for feeling 'disadvantaged' with DDR vs DDR2, put it this way. AMD chips can only support DDR at the moment and not DDR2, yet they can match/outperform equivalent P4 machines with DDR2. DDR2 is not as advantageous to AMD 64 as it is to P4 so don't let that be a deciding factor in your purchase.

You would get a MUCH greater performance increase from going with an AMD 64 setup with DDR as opposed to a single core P4 with DDR2.

You could get a Dual core P4 also, but they are pricy and very hot.

Well, you all recomended AMD so I think I'll go with the X2 but one question though...I saw that some of you are using DDR 600 (!!!) and I thought the highest speed of the DDR is 400 so, can someone explain this to me please..? and does all mobo's that support Dual DDR will support a memmory of 600mhz ?
It will be great if you could recomend a couple of mobo's that supports the 600 DDR and SLI.
Thanks a lot guys, you are the best !!!

the reason some people use higher specced DDR is because they have locked multipliers and to overclock they need to raise the FSB which in turns overclocks the memory (unless they use a divider) to higher speeds.

If you want something that makes it to DDR600 and has SLI, you're probably looking at the DFI SLI-DR or Expert. Both of those should do 300HTT easily (if your chip can handle it).
