Onboard NICs and Jumbo frames

Don't ever take for granted that a desktop onboard NIC can do jumbo frames. Wasted an hour in my lab troubleshooting a networking issue and this ended up being the case. Felt like I had time warped back to 2005. Who makes motherboards with NICs that don't support Jumbos? What does that save a manufacturer? $0.05 per board?

Most Onboard NICs do support jumbo. The problem is they often suck at it. This is why you use a server-grade multi-port NIC for even a home lab instead of anything onboard. Performance tends to stink and connectivity issues that you'd never suspect show up.

I had been sneaking by for a while with the onboard NICs on my MSI motherboards but these Gigabyte onboard NICs suck.

The other 4 ports in my hosts are Intel so they handle Jumbos great. For the other traffic (Mgmt, VMs, NFS, VMotion) I'll just either have to settle for 1500 MTU or by another Intel card for each host.

I'm just bitching because in 2013 I would expect ALL onboard NICs to support Jumbos. :D
 
Never buy a motherboard or PC without Intel LAN onboard. Realtek and Marvell are nowhere near acceptable. As far as I'm concerned, even Broadcom is unacceptable when it comes to NICs.

That's my stance as well when it comes to network adapters, though if I can get by with onboard in my lab I try to go that route. When it comes to clients, I only recommend Intel NICs.

I do wish Intel sold a dual port NIC using PCI-Express 2.0 x1. PCI-E 2.0 has a theoretical maximum throughput of 500MB/s per lane so it should be able to handle 2Gb. Probably not much of a market for that outside of geeks with home labs, however.

That is what I am running, the Intel ones. I am wondering if I should of gone with a quad port card....
