Onboard audio doesnt work?

I just got a ECS KT7VA3 V6.0 to build a cheap homework computer for my borhter. I got it all set up, and all works fine till he tries to play a CD, no audio. I figured no big deal, I probably just plugged his speakers into the wrong jack. After trying all the jacks, still doesnt work. I got new drivers off ECS website, still nothing. Obviosly I made sure the sound was up and not muted. I checked multimedia properties and the Realtek AC'97 is listed as the default playback device...anyone know why it wont work? I have a really old PCI soundcard/modem, but I dont ahve drivers for it and have no idea who its made by.
 
meh, it was set to auto, only other choice was disabled. Any other ideas?
 
is there front audio and usb? if so make sure its hooked up. if not there are pin covers or w/e there called and you have to put them over the audio pins on the mobo.

you can buy a cheap audigy gamer sound card 6.1 for around 20 bucks. that might be the easy way to go.

No, setting up front audio isnt worth the hassle on most case (it rawks on my X-Dreamer coz it doesnt use a jumper, just plugs into the jacks), but there were already thingers on the motherboard jumper. I was thinking just getting a cheap ass sound card to, doesnt even need to be audigy, just a crappo $10 card. Problem is my brother is poor, he cant afford one

If it were disabled, Windows would not even detect the sound hardware.

Under device manager, is there anything that is marked with ! or ?

What OS are you using? While in device manager, go under properties for your CD rom and make sure that Enable digital playback is selected.

Could always go without sound.. it is for homework, afterall ;)

OS is XP Pro. I checked all the stuff above, it all looks normal. And yeah he coudl go without sound, but he wants it for when he uses aim. He is a picky bitch and would pitch a fit over that annoying little chime sound. Im read to tell him get a sound card or go without sound
 
You are missing just CD audio? or all audio?

Did you run the analog CD audio cable to the motherboard?

That's a realtek 650 setup, so are the speakers detected when you do the UAJ detection in the realtek sound utility?

Don't need the analog cables any more with teh recent versions of Windows.. hence the digital extraction I mentioned earlier.

Also, that uses the VIA VT1612A for audio.. not the realtek.
 
Sorry then, I'm all out of ideas.

Besides the stupid stuff like check the wiring, speaker volume/power source, and make sure your mixers aren't muted.

Download the latest sound vinyl and 4in1s? (can't see how that would make a working/not working difference).

All the wiring and whatnot is fine. The speakers dont need exertnal power, there cheapos. THey worked yesturday on his old machine tho, so I dont know whats up. Gunna try some heatphones if I can find em
 
odd, i found out today, it is working, its the really f'ing quite. I have to mash my ear agaisnt the speaker to even here anythign. This is with the volume maxed. Anybody got any ideas? A hadware acceleration issue maybe?

Is it really quiet with headphones, also?
