Hi all. I have an SB65G2 lying around. It's P4 (Northwood only?), AGP, DDR.

I don't really feel like gathering the parts to make an almost ok HTPC, so I'm wondering if anyone would be kind enough to help me figure out if there's any way to get an mITX board set up in there. I tried googling, and everything I saw said that the original mobos are proprietary and recommended not upgrading.

I'm no case modder, but I do own a dremel and other tools, and I'd be willing to try out some minor / simple case mods if they'd make it possible to utilize this decent little case for some updated gear.

Any other thoughts / ideas are totally welcome, and thanks much for any help!
 
If the screw holes for the mother board lined up you might be able to put a Mini ITX board in there. The backplate would probably have to be modified to work .
 
The screws holes do not look like they line up with that of a typical ITX mobo.

Physically, a mini-ITX mobo should fit inside that case since a ITX mobo is only 170 × 170mm. The Flex-ATX mobo in the Shuttle is 254mm x 185mm. So you should have plenty of clearance. Now all you have to do is figure out where to start drilling holes to place the mounting/screw holes for a ITX mobo and how to remove the backplate (assuming that it's not already removable).

I'll open it up and dig around. How do you go about adding standoff spots, and how hard is that to do? Do you think I'd have any issues with the front i/o panel stuff?
 
Just so happens that I'm doing this with a SB86G5M at the moment.

You will need a dremel to cut off the old motherboard standoffs and grind them flat (or else they'll short the back of your new itx board).

You'll need some of the brass screw in standoffs and a 3mm drill bit i think. To do it properly you want to drill a hole and then use an M3 tap to thread it but I found that the standoffs self tap through the aluminum well enough on their own.

Front I/O will probably be a pain if its like mine. The power/reset switch and LEDs are on a USB header style block which is easy enough to extend to reach the new ITX board but the audio and USB IO is on a proprietary circuit board with a ribbon cable which goes to the shuttle MB - If yours is like this you'll probably want to pull out the whole lot and start again.

Next place you'll have problems is the rear IO plate. The shuttle cases have non ATX standard so you'll find your ITX rear IO probably wont line up with the hole. Again a bit of judicious dremeling is called for. For my case I've cut away most of the back and I'm going to put a whole new plate of metal in and start again.

You also might need to think about the PSU, does it have enough cables to run the components you'll be installing. Again, for my build it didn't so I pulled it out and I've got an SFX PSU from a SUGO to go in it,

Unfortunately, it's not going to be economical for me to reuse the case. Katch, thanks very much for explaining all that, it made it clear that it will take a lot more time than I have. Having to replace the PSU rather seals the fate on this puppy. Thanks again for taking the time to explain!
