Old Daylight Saving Time = New Problems?

Like most of you, I’ve totally forgotten about the changes made to daylight saving time back in 2005. Apparently the change can cause problems with software created before the change. If you have a date marked on your calendar…check it twice.

Actually, it's a potential problem in any software that was programmed before a 2005 law decreed that daylight-saving time would start three weeks earlier and end one week later, beginning this year. Congress decided that more early evening daylight would translate into energy savings.

Energy savings my ass! The amount of waste this little experiment will generate is going to overshadow any savings. Why our "Government" thought this was a good idea boggles my mind..........

Yeah, best part is, you have to buy the patch for Windows 2000 and no patches for NT.

8 - 5 (Worktime) is 8 - 5 whether the sun is up or down. People don't change their routine because of daylight savings time. How this will save any energy is beyond me. Nevermind the big f-ing hassle this is for system admins.

Yep, only Canada and the USA... god damn it why does Canada have to be such a follower. I mean, it wouldn't hurt us if we just did something different than he states for once.

Thankyou! It's the biggest PITA ever!!! Gain an hour, loose an hour... It screws up my sleep pattern, witch by the way is all ready screwd up because I work on rotating shifts. My children have no very little concept of time, so it's either they wake up really early, or it's impossible to get them up out of bed. AAUUGGHHH!!!!!

Just do away with the DST mess all together. I want to move to one of the states that don't follow DST... :(

Well, as Homer puts it, you're "America, jr." :D

Brilliant!

Better yet, let’s begin March early so that we can bypass the adverse effects of winter. After all, energy usage in the spring is much less than in the winter. </sarcasm>

This bill will have absolutely no effect on our energy crisis. Even congress has admitted that they are uncertain of the bills effect. To make matters worse, it’s only temporary. So once the bill expires, we will revert back to the normal daylight savings cycle.

One thing is for sure; our government is literally clueless when it comes to making decisions like this and their effect on technology…

I think the point was for it to be lighter longer when we get off work, so we will go out and spend money. Rather than sitting home with all our lights on ;)

What bothers me about it is that it is no longer a fixed date, first Sunday or some crap.

It's never been a fixed date. It previously lasted from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October. Now it's the last Sunday in March to the First Sunday in November, or ~2 weeks more DST.

And I agree, DST should be eliminated alltogether. It's not going make much of a difference if it gets dark at 8:30 instead of 9:30. People who are out that late are going to be out light or dark.

Actually it affects every country in some way. If a country communicates with countries with the change then well you need to know about the time differences.

We've been dealing with these patches at work. I don't this will be an OMG event but I actually do think it may actually have more impact then Y2K did. There are a lot of legacy systems that aren't going to be ready for this (and probably never will be).

Apparently Microsoft's DST patch is causing problems with some of our exchange stores, on the phone with msft now.

We applied the patch this morning, and when the servers came backup about half of them didn't load all of their message stores, oops.

What bothers me is that if we had waited till the last minute to fix then they probably would have had a new patch by then.

Personally, I would rather see the time jumped ahead an hour at the end of March like they have planned and after that, just leave it alone.

I see no energy savings or anything else come out of this. I just don't see the reason to have to change my clocks back and forth a couple times a year. Besides, I prefer to have the light towards the end of the day. Basically, I hate leaving work when it's dark. It just seems to make the day drag on longer. Also, when it's dark when I go in in the morning, it seems to make the day go by faster.

how much of a daylight time change does hawaii even get? it cant be that much.

Daylight savings, (sarcastically) yeah... Come on now, how much time/energy will be saved by moving it back/forward. I have a feeling that in the future, they will change daylight savings time again.

Um that is WHY it is supposed to work. If they shift time by 1 hour the idea is that the sun will be up when you get up. By trying to match the population to the shorter day the idea is that they will turn on fewer lights because there will be daylight at that time.

I don't think it will work mind you, I think the whole process is anoying.
