I acquired some older computers from my company as there were being thrown out. I asked if I could have them but was told they were not to show up again....they were supposed to be gone permanently. If I format them would there be any way for them to be traced back or otherwise? Are they able to see if they turn on and connect to a network after the format?

If you DD the drives, nothing on the drives themselves should be able to contact home. But the MAC address might identify them if there's software looking for those MAC addresses. Just a wild guess though.

The MAC address is hard-coded into the NIC (yes there are ways around this.)

Wipe the drives, as long as you don't bring them on up on your work LAN they will never see those MACs again.

If they're lojacked, that stuff lives in the computer's BIOS. And if they are and you fire them up, they can phone home and end your career. Don't want to spend the rest of your life flipping burgers and mopping floors? Then do the right thing.

Don't be an idiot.

These were never anything critical, not to mention at this point they have not been used since 07, so I am sure there is no Lojack on them...they are also not laptops and all the info I can find on that is for laptops only. The mac address was really the one thing that came to my mind

Wait, so they threw them out and you intercepted them or they threw them out and you found that they weren't and confiscated them?

If they were "thrown out" are we talking placed at the street for the trash truck to pick them up or was someone supposed to "dispose" of them?
