I quit SETI@home.
F@H: here i come!

Actually, right away i won't be able to contribute that many GHz (only about 3 to 5) but that's better than nothing.
So you know i'm a n00b. I know nothing about F@H, except to run it as often as possible, and that the only team number i need to know is #33 :D. I'm running the graphical client for OS X (1.5G4 PB) but i'll change that to the more efficient text client probably within an hour or two... unless someone else tells me to finish the Work Unit (sorry if that's a seti-only term) that i'm running in the GUI client.

I'm an old hat at S@H, so i know kinda how this works, but i'm still new to F@H. I've been lurking around in this forum for a while, and i was going to wait until the S@H project finally died before switching over, but that's taking too long. I'll do more homework (reading FAQs, checking out pages, etc.) until i get a response. Thanks....

And wish me luck!!!

1.5GHz folding for the [H]orde

Welcome!
Finish the WU you have in the GUI before switching to the console; there's no need to waste the work you've done!
Be sure to get tuned in to the stats pages and track your progress; that's half the fun of it! There's also the purty little H's...!

I run the graphical client on all my rigs. But run what you want, lol... I'm just glad youre here !!

Sweet, sweet. I'll keep pokeing around to see what more i can discover here....
edit: guess i should get around to changing my sig, huh? :)

i believe if you run the console from the same directory as your graphical client. You can still run the rest of the WU without losing anything. I have done this myself. Anyway welcome to the [H]orde.:D

Thanks. I don't see why not, but will that procedure work the same on a mac? Apparently for the GUI the application is not in the same folder as the data... so it's not like it's contained all in one folder. I haven't even been running for more than two hours, so maybe it's not that much progress to lose if things to awry?

Welcome aboard. I can't be of any help on the GUI to console switch because I never have tried the GUI. Heck there was not even a GUI when I started folding. When I started, I used the old school slide rule till someone convinced me to try the console version. ;) That's just me I guess.....use what works. I still burn CDs by hand with a soildering iron and a magnifying glass. :p

Anyway, all joking aside, welcome aboard and enjoy your ride through all the dead meat at the bottom of the team.

Well, thanks again. On a side note, just cause i'm still getting started... how do i get the [H]s in my signature? I've read the FAQ, but i'm not having any luck getting that .gif to display. Call me stupid.

Another question: the GUI (and presumably the textual client) gives me the ability to choose what kind of work unit i would like to download... {No Prefrence, Standard, No Deadlines}. My question is: what's the diffrence? (Besides the obvious :p) Do you all have any prefrence as far as this goes?

To get the H's, you will need to copy a bit of code to insert in your post.
code*** http://www.mentallyretired.com/h/index.cfm/u_NoXPert[/IMG]***code
Of course, to get this to show your H's, you'll need to do two things. Change out my user name for yours and insert the beginning IMG tag to the code above, following the same format of [ tag name ]. We'd be glad to help you out if you can't get it working. What name are you folding under, anyways?

As for the WU preference, most of us use standard. For slow boxen (computers under 1 GHZ mainly), No Deadlines would be appropriate, as it does not expire. Go here for all the WU and their deadlines, frames, points, etc. No preference means you could get either. I don't know much about the Mac client, either GUI or text, so I assume these explanations are in line with what we get through a configuration on PC.

Things might be different on a MAC, but if you follow the hyperlink in the first post of this thread:

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=786622

it should be self-explanatory....

Awesome, thanks for the links and info. I'm currently 1.5% of the way (after probably three hours) through this puppy:
p1137_p1131_L939_K12M_355K (protein)
46.0 (pref. deadline)
68.0 (max deadline)
241.0 (credit) <-- is this the point value that y'all've been talking about?
400 (frames)

I'm folding under DatHak512

when i plug this into my browser
http://www.mentallyretired.com/h/index.cfm/u_DatHak512
i get "Bad Username"
could this just be a problem because i'm new to FAH?

Finally, even if you can't give any help for my Mac, that's fine because i'll be doing most of my folding on PCs.

Sorry! Should have said something about that. You'll get that until you submit a WU (finish). I think there is a breakdown of the H's somewhere in that thread Hito mentioned; you may need a certain point level to obtain one.
Yeah, the credit you show there (241) is the point value, which is what the H's are based on. You'll be working on that one for a couple days, for sure, but you'll knock it out well within your deadline. If you check out the forums on the Stanford folding site, there are some useful Mac related apps you can get that are like our EM3 for PC, which you'll also want to get for using text client on PC. That is at www.em-dc.com, and is made by one of the members here. It is a superb little utility to monitor multiple boxen (or just one!).

Good good. I'll re-try that image once i return this sucker. I've already looked at EMIII (or read up on it at least) and that sounds like it'll be awesome once i get my other boxen folding. Thanks for the tip on the Mac stuff at the Stanford site... i must have missed that. I'll check that out.

On another note, i was reading the trade parts sticky at the top of this forum / subforum and i think that once i get home i have a bunch of stuff that i can ship off to anyone who needs it. Or alternativly i could beg a case + mobo off of someone and scrape a few more boxen together since once i get back to college, i don't have to pay the electric bill :D

edit: an update that isn't really all that important...
I've switched over to the CLI client.... there seems to be no loss (or negligable loss) in progress: it said i've completed 10 frames outta 400 right when i started it up, so i think that's a good sign. I have no idea how to tell how much progress i've made using the CLI client though. (And i couldn't find any apps that would allow me to check on the progress (like EM only for Mac). I'll check more tomorrow morning. In the meantime, i'll fold on...

It seems like interest in monitoring programs has kind of slacked off a bit - I don't know of others besides EM anymore, but I know kdfold vanished. I used to use EM a lot when the chances of the client stopping or crashing were much greater. I can't even remember the last client problem I had (must have been years ago), so I just install the client, set it as a service and head off to do other things. I check the stats all the time just to see if things are generally going OK, but I almost never check individual machines. Welcome to the team DatHak512!

Funny I was actually going to do the SETI deal, just got into DC about a week ago...

Marty

Marty,
I hope you look at folding as a DC project as well. Most of us think it's the way to go since it's got the potential to cure so many diseases out there. Look it over and let us know if you have any questions.

Glad to have you, the more the better :D

Fold on

Look up marty9876 on a folding stats page. I think you will be nicely surprised.

edit: Well, here's a link for the lazy. http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=118052

Welcome aboard!!

Fold on!!!

Okay. A few things have changed. I talked to my friend (Sniper991122) last night and since we did SETI@home during the same period, we've decided that we're gonna switch to FAH together as well... but we'll work under the same username. My (and his) new username is: B&H
So (hopefully) keep your eyes peeled for that. But at any rate, now we've got two new people folding. :D

I think that's all for now!

Heh, well it will be a little while before that happens. Anyway, you got a head start ; )

on PCs.. use the console install w/ service option to avoid user interference.. AND to keep the open GL conflict that SOMETIMES appears when people use the graphical client and are running certian games / apps at the same time. console = rock solid, fast, and tamper resistant : ) .. you should run it with a /? to see all your tag options. most of us choose to run with the "force advanced" and the "folding" work units (instead of the genome or no-pref) . need anything? just holla.

cheers, and welcome to the THREE new folders :D
