Oh yeah, looking forward to it. The only thing about having so many cool games out there that I want to play is focusing on one long enough to beat it before another shiny one lures my attention away.

As far as getting one, the way I got mine was I bit the bullet & got one of the bundles. You overpay for some of the included stuff of course but I actually wanted more controllers for the fam anyway and liked some of the games, so I didn't feel too ripped off, and wrote it off in my mind as trading money for the time I would spend trying to hunt just the retail console down. Given how much we've enjoyed it so far I don't regret it at all.

I'm in no hurry to get one for sure. There are no games I want to play on PS5 at the moment, but I have $300 in Amazon credit sitting in my account that I got through a special program I am in through my employer. I was going to wait to look for one to buy once I get $500 in Amazon credit, but I figured I'd might as well start trying to get one now. $200 out-of-pocket for a PS5 I'd still be really happy with. If it's too hard or too much of a hassle to get one then I won't bother.

Can't buy gift cards with Amazon credit, and no I want to get a PS5. I won a Series X from Taco Bell and I want to have the PS5 for the exclusives that will be coming I'm interested in.

There's already a new version of the PlayStation 5, and it's got a very small but critical change

A new version of the PlayStation 5 just launched, but it's hardly distinguishable from the version that arrived in November 2020...the new PlayStation 5 model was first spotted in Australia and later seen in other territories as well...what makes the new model different from the original model? It mostly boils down to a single screw:

Since the PlayStation 5 launched late last year, anyone who's been lucky enough to get one has had to use a screwdriver every time they wanted to attach or disconnect the base from the console...rather than having to use a screwdriver, the new console uses a screw that can be attached with your bare hand...it still features an indent for a screwdriver if you choose to use one, but it can otherwise be tightened without getting out tools...

Hey guys so I have a couple questions regarding the PS5 which just confuse me...

1. Is there seriously no way to organize the home page? The PS4's UI allowed me to create folders and alphabetize games in said folder. Here all I am seeing is a long list of games.
2. Are the games that are on the internal hard drive the only ones that show up on the main page? I plugged in my external hard drive that has some of my PS4 games installed on it, but I saw no way to get those games to show up on the home page.
3. When transferring content from external to internal or vice-versa do I seriously have to watch that progress bar do it's thing? It feels like with the Xbox I can move around games and still explore around other places or play games...

I didn't have much time to mess with it last night, but I can't help but feel that the UI and home page for the Series X is infinitely better. I really need a crash course in how to use this system because there is a bunch of shit that's confusing me like when I highlight a game and see a shitload of info pop-up underneath about it I don't care about...

  1. No, and that has been one of the major criticisms of the new UI.
  2. PS4 games should show up on the main page once you play them, as it still cycles recently played through the list.
  3. Yes, unfortunately you can't do anything else when transferring files.
I agree about the Series X|S UI being better. Microsoft was smart enough to at least not remove any functionality this time around like they did with the Xbox One at release. For some reason Sony decided they needed to reinvent the wheel and went with form over function.

Well that really sucks. Luckily I don' t really have any games on PS5 I want to play at the moment. First will likely be the PS5 version of Death Stranding at the end of next month.

I am sure we will see updates and UI improvements over the coming months and years, but I really hope they get this home screen together because there is so much wasted space. The UI makes virtually no sense from a user-perspective... I mean they've gotten it right for so long with organization back to the PSP and PS3 and now this just seems like a huge step backwards.
 
Anyone know where I can find this supposed "Playstation Plus Collection?" It's a collection of like 19 games or so that is exclusive to PS Plus PS5 owners.

I had to add all of the ones I didn't have to my library first. My PS Plus subscription was renewed after I bought the PS5. Before that, I wasn't using it.

The cross media bar which they used for a long time on PS3, Vita, and even blu-ray players-----was pretty commonly disliked. Althogh I enjoyed it for its straightforward simplicity. People/journalists/critics, felt it wasn't modern or useful enough.

The PS5 UI definitely appears modern. But....its way too convoluted and unintuitive.

It took a long time to do some things, but it was at least functional with useful features. The Steam UI has long been criticized by some people for being outdated, but it works. Valve may have updated the look of the interface and added some more features in the past couple years, but it at least still does exactly what it's supposed to and it does it well.

It's a mess, i hate it. Changing the home button after like 15 years is just stupid.
 
Okay so someone explain why this is a thing... I am transferring 4 games from an external HDD to the internal SSD... And i can't move away from this page until it's done! I have been watching this status bar for over 30 minutes and it won't even give me a completion ETA. The Series X can download, move, and quick resume between games all in the background and multitask anything I throw at it, but the all-powerful PS5 can't do a game transfer in the background to where I can't even explore the other menus or anything while doing this? This is ridiculous.

The more I use this system the more inferior it feels to the Series X experience.

Oh Ya, I love the ps5 but it's new UI is a piece of shit compared to the Xbox UI and even the PS4. The PS4 UI was by far my favorite (was way better than the Xbox one I feel) but unfortunately that's gone now :(

Does the cheaper cooling solution make any difference?...there are a few theories out there about the potential for overheating that I think bear addressing...PlayStation 5 operates to a set power limit, with CPU and GPU core clocks moving up and down according to their power requirements...there's concern that a hotter PlayStation 5 would see the machine unable to hit the boost clocks attainable in a notionally cooler launch model

yes, performance on the new model should be tested, but I find it extremely unlikely that the new PS5 will perform any differently even if it were hotter than the old one...

I don't think the PS5's CPU and GPU boosts are governed by the temps. I think its based on power available. Unlike a general user's mystery PC-----PS5 is specifically specced and designed. So the temps shouldn't be a question mark. So its not needed as a parameter for dynamic performance changes.

The system has a peak power spec and the CPU and GPU load balance who gets what, at any given moment, depending upon demand. And potentially, a Developer could manually emphasize one or the other, to meet certain goals.

meh the curves are not awesome by any means and I wish it was black. I have a stand for my 55 inch tv with a big glass base. Ps5 fits nicely on it under the tv on it's side.
 
I wish I could remove (or at least hide!) all those pointless "apps" and icons. Blocking a bunch of the psn/sony IP ranges at least gets rid of the stupid ads/explore bloat.
All I need/want to see is my installed games - nothing else. IIRC this was possible on the PS4 (memory is a bit fuzzy though).

You can kinda/sorta arrange things, but Sony wants you to use all that other stuff because a good chunk of it = revenue in one form or another. It's still better than the (IMO horrible) UI for the last two Xbox machines, but I don't love it. The PS4 let you put things in folders that essentially allowed you to keep all your games in one place and ignore everything else.
 
Sony actually achieved Nintendo-quality platforming with Astro's Playroom.

As someone who has owned every Xbox, Nintendo, and Sony console ever released I can not express the sheer joy I had while playing Astro's Playroom. It was akin to when I played the last couple Mario games, and simultaneously was an amazing trip down memory lane and the history of PlayStation throughout the years.

Seeing all the little robots around the levels recreating classic franchise moments from other Sony first-party titles just really warmed my heart, and the attention to detail everywhere was just a pleasure to play. I keep wanting to go back and find the remaining artifacts and find other Easter-eggs.

I feel like Sony with Astro's Playroom could very-well have a Mario-like mascot and a awesome premise for possible future Astro-like games.

I have yet to buy any PS5-exclusive games yet, but powering on the PS5 and seeing this wonderful treat as a pack-in game was not only a wonderful return back to the days for me when consoles used to come with pack-in games, but also the production value and effort and care and love that was put into Astro's Playroom is really a wonderful gift to everyone who has bought a PS5 and really feels like a love letter from Sony to all the PlayStation fans who have enjoyed their systems and games throughout the years.

I just wish there was more Astro to play!

Indeed! I just picked up a good deal on the PSVR in FSFT so I can play Astro Bot Rescue Mission among other PS exclusive VR titles. But I really hope they do a proper Astro game later on for sure. I have yet to find another game that makes such good use of the Dual Sense either.
 
I'm hopeful we get more Astro's Playroom. Not sure there's enough nostalgic content to support a full/large game, but something else. It's definitely proof that Nintendo doesn't have a lock on that sort of game and that you can still have great graphics, too.

The changes likely even out to a non-issue. Even if the APU does actually run a few degrees warmer on average, its well within tolerance and it actually runs quieter. PS5 boost/turbo is not dictated by temps. Its by power. There will be no performance loss.

The heatsink's heatpipes are reduced in number, the fin stacks are reduced in size, the base plate is smaller and no longer primarily made from copper.

But the fan is a better model with more fins (usually means better pressure) and overall quieter.

The upgraded fan is probably able to spin faster, with less noise. An improved fan design + higher RPM means a lot more pressure and CFM. This should mostly even out the thermals with a smaller heatsink. Especially if the old one was actually a bit overkill.

The final thing, which is not at all confirmed but: The new heatsink could be manufactured better. which actually means something, when you look at Noctua heatsinks. Their smaller units perform as well as some larger heatsinks from other brands.

There is also a definite opportunity for a future PS5 to re-work the path which the air takes to exit, improving cooling. This current revision is obviously meant to work with the current design. And the current design has a surprisingly restrictive exit path.
 
So am I missing something? Why is it that if you only have a PS4 at the moment, and REALLY want a PS5 but just can't find one... why can't you start buying PS5 games now and play them on your PS4 until you can find a PS5? Like Horizon Forbidden West is an example. If you buy the $70 PS5 version you should just be able to insert that disc into a PS4 and play the PS4 version until you have a PS5.

But you're probably asking; why not just buy the PS4 version now and upgrade to the PS5 version later? Well why should you HAVE to do that if you OWN the game? What if you want the PS5 case and you don't want to continue buying PS4 games when you eventually want to buy a PS5?

I really feel like Xbox's system of "Smart Delivery" is so easy to understand compared to the PS5 and not to mention that Series X-optimized games aren't $10 more. Whatever system you have, the game will be played on the best version for that system automatically.

Also it's really frustrating you can't preload games you don't own yet. You can do that on Xbox, but not on PS5... like I have COD: Cold War coming from Gamefly... it would have been nice to be able to preload the likely 100+ GB game before I get the disc in but I can't.
