Is the texture popping really this bad? I've seen a couple of videos of the sort but at the same time I've seen videos like this one where everything seems quite fine.

I don't know why people keep saying it's impossible to get refunds for a released game on Steam. I've tried getting BF2 (yes, Battlefield 2) refunded on Steam, I sent a ticket and they allowed it.

Drivers I would say. I have AMD and it pops in like hell. I know people with nVidia and it's fine.

That was my thought also. Maybe we'll see if that is effectively the case as people chime in here and there.

I guess for me it will be "wait and see" regarding Rage -- I do not feel like being a beta tester...

I sent in my request for a refund. 20 minutes played (attempted to play?)

Latest drivers, everything stable, game is artifacting like mad, major pop in and level of detail issues, and the bad guys teleport/disappear randomly all over the place. It's just unplayable. After the Dead Island "whoops wrong version released, sorry guys!" - if I don't see a refund, Steam won't be seeing my money in the future, and I would be tempted to chat with some of the guys at work about their policies regarding selling games that are unplayable....I know we are in talks with them over a bunch of topics...

Yes, it's really that bad. I'm running Nvidia and I don't have any CTD issues that ATI users are seeing, but the texture popin is bad. Had to force VSYNC in nvidia options, first game I've had that tears so bad, and no VSYNC option in the game itself. Had to enable console to adjust menu sensitivity (what is it with console ports and menu sensitivity being through the roof?) and FOV. But, that said, it's been fun to play if you subtract out the graphical problems and configuration hassle.

Texture popin isn't bothering me that much, since it'll be fixed very very soon.

But the gameplay itself is terribly boring :(

Combat is bland.... What am I doing wrong?

Thank you for the feedback. I'm on the fence about the game so I'm hoping these issues will be addressed in a soon-to-be-released patch. If I resume what I've read so far, it's a interesting game plagued by silly technical issues.

I'm quite surprised you think the combat is bland. I've been reading reviews and comments and most people seem to be pleased with the enemy AI providing dynamic gunfights. I'm genuinely interested in what you find bland or don't like about the combat.

I just don't find combat that engaging at all. I just aim my rifle, pull butan and wait until the enemy dies. It's not exciting/engaging at all for me. Maybe it'll change soon, I'm 1.7 hours into the game.

Playing on "hard".

Anyone running Rage on an SSD? Wonder if that would help the texture pop in problem.

It didn't help the texture crawl in UE3 but these are two totally different beasts and it very well could.

Sad to see so much negative press for this game. I'm gonna withhold judgement until I can actually play it.

The game was unplayable for me.

Windows 7 64bit
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P
Sapphire HD 4870 1G GDDR5 PCI-E
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066
W.D. Caviar SE16 640GB
Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EADS 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"
Antec 300 ATX Case
Corsair 650W PSU

I get horrible texture pop-in with framerate drop < 20 (Maybe even more like 10) every time I try to turn around a bit. I also get spikes of 0 fps every 5sec. That's after updating my drivers. As far as I know my computer is beyond the minimum requirements and way ahead of what an XBox or a PS3 can do.

the texture 'pop-in' was very noticible, i played it for about 1.4 hours before going to work. It is very annoying to me personally. I havnt noticed any texture artifacting or tearing at all (dual 580s, 120hz monitor) and I agree with the combat being bland (so far) it is very simple to kill enemies. (only fought mutants and bandits so far, with one mini boss that was a joke). The textures look great in specific areas, and really substandard on certain objects, which can be kind of an immersion kill. Fix the texture problems and (hopefully) add graphics options and it will be a good game I think.

windows 7 64
i52500k @ 4
dual 580's
8g 1600 ram
raid 0 SSD's

game runs smoothly, didnt get a chance to check fps with fraps.

I will post the shots as soon as I will buy the game.
I'm in europe and here the game will arrive october 7th.

since every reviews says that the graphics is amazing I would like to know who complains about graphics or popping texture what hardware are using.

obviously you need a good graphics card to run this game, if you have a single GTX560/570 running on a 24inch display really, don't complain before buying an upgrade for your hardware.

Found this:

http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1236440-love-it-runs-great-here/

EXTRA INFO:

my specs:

intel i7 2600k @ stock speed
16GB of DDR3 ram
EVGA Geforce GTX580
Win7 Ultimate 64-bit

Here's the only real tweaks I've applied:

(1) downloaded the latest Nvidia beta drivers (285.xx)
(2) set RAGE.EXE in my steam folder to triple buffer on, vsync on via the nvidia control panel
(3) Make sure to turn on GPU transcoding in RAGE's option menu if you have a nvidia GTX400 or GTX500 series card... improves texture quality and such
(4) IF your getting alot of texture pop-in or screen tearing, try setting your video cards vsync options to on through you cards control panel, and also try disabling SLI and/or updating your video drivers.
(5) Some have reported random crashing on certain SLI configurations. Try disabling SLI. If your game still randomly grashes, once again, try updating your vid drivers... this seems to helping ALOT by updating with many issues.
(6)These are my launch settings (configured in Steam):

+ cvaradd g_fov 20 +set com_skipIntroVideo 1 + image_anisotropy 16 + image_usecompression 0

- change fov from default of 80 to 100
- disable intro vids
- improve texture sharpness over distance
- use higher quality textures

I've enabled the console so I can see settings, etc by editing my default.cfg and adding:

com_allowConsole 1

but you can also choose these methods:

Method 1) In Steam launch options add +set com_allowconsole 1

Method 2) Create a shortcut to Rage.exe and add +set com_allowconsole 1
Launch game from shortcut.

Method 3) Alternatively, you can add it to the default.cfg located in:
C:\Steam\steamapps\common\rage\base\default.cfg
Add at the very top set com_allowconsole 1
If you launch game directly from Steam console will now be enabled.

To drop down console in-game, press tilda (~) (default key mapping).

To view commands: listCmds

To view cvars: listCvars

Enter clear to erase the console window.

Havent read the entire thread, but

The whole point of Id's new engine is to have it looking next gen with old hardware. 9800gtx or radeon 5550 is the recommended spec - the game obviously needs patching

Yea there is indeed something wrong with AMD drivers for this game. No matter the res, even if I set it to 720p or lower it struggles to keep even just 30fps and there are artifacts all over for my 5870 with bf3 drivers, rage drivers, and 11.9 drivers. While I see posts and videos from various people with nvidia cards that are mostly locked at 60fps and have significantly less texture pop.

9800GTX is enough for a 19inch monitor at maximum.

[Edit] - got it on steam (steamworks), no return policy. They basically stole $60 from me. I'm so sick right now I can't even say it. I want to load it back up because it was supposed to be so good, but knowing the truth, I can't force myself to. It's just that bad!
This game specifically has no returns?

I can't imagine why Steam wouldn't have a proper return system since it's all linked to an account. They know it's impossible to play once they remove it from your account.

Kind of glad I didn't spend 60 bucks on this. lol. Wanted to see how you guys felt about it before purchasing.

I was one click away from preordering it yesterday, but got distracted and fell asleep. Today in the morning after reading the forums felt glad I didn't.

yea, its totally broken for all ATI users it seems. Going to have a friend pop in his 570 to see how much better it is later.

I'm running GTX 580 SLI and an SSD, seeing popin issues except under certain configurations that I can't seem to replicate, and it doesn't seem SLI is actually functioning. I could be wrong but the performance between non-SLI and SLI is no different, and the "nvidia recommended" setting always reverts it to "Single-GPU", selecting one of the rendering options for SLI still gives the same performance.

We are bothered from his trolling here.

Theres a new ati driver coming later today, the one last night they mistakingly packed older opengl files in it.

@CatalystCreator: All - don't use the current Rage performance driver - package includes very old OGL files, that's why you're seeing corruption etc.

@CatalystCreator: New Rage driver with proper OGL component will be posted later today

And this is why I don't buy games anymore on release date. Glad I held off.

wow....so disappointed in what I'm hearing about ID's latest offering.
It seems like they been working on this forever, WTH happened???

They catered to the consoles first and the quick, easy cash would be my strong hunch.
