Official Catalyst 4.4 Thread

hey... if you are that hard off about ATi's crappy drivers. Send me your video card... and go buy nvidia parts.

I'm sure I'll be able to get it working correctly.

cornelious0_0: No hard feelings whatsoever...didn't mean to jump the gun on ya. Thank you for attempting to help me out.

Orkan: Not saying ATI's drivers are crap...they were in the past. But nowadays they are usually pretty squared away...as far as you implying my being an nvidiot...not interested in a flame here and I like both brands just fine...and I do believe I'll be holding onto this sexy 9800pro;)

Hey folks,

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, and it's a long shot. But, I updated to the lastest Cat drivers for my ATI AIW 9800 Pro from the 4.3 drivers. And when I updated my scroll rates in windows seem to have gone to complete crap. Browsing through these forums even is nasty. I mean I'm running a top-of-the-line machine and it's working no better than the old P2 I have sitting at work for scroll rates. This just isn't right. Especially notiable if anyone here plays MUSHs (text based games... yeah I know you can yell at me for htat if you like). I use a program called MUSHClient and the scroll rates in that are horrendous at the moment. Everyone was as it should be until I updated... and I can't seem to roll back the drivers. Very annoying. Anyway, anyone run into this issue? I'd appreciate it bit of help.

Peace,
-T.

What this sounds like right away is that you have to change your Fastwrite setting from on to off, or vise versa. I have seen the EXACT same thing happen, and it seems that some drivers default it to different settings for me.

After having the drivers installed it'll be under the Smartgart tab.....switch it from whatever it is and let me know.

Remember I posted a similar thing? Saying the start menu lags and video no longer working, well I turned fastwrite from on to off, and even back again on both Off and On it did the same thing, so for now I reverted back to 4.3 Cats, oh well.

Aww well, I tried. :p

Not hard enough! mauhahaha! You've always been quite helpful, thank you for such.

Strange... I installed the new drivers on 3 machines (Actually, waited for Omega 4.4 to install them..)

Radeon 9800XT 256MB
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB

All 3 cards have seen performance improvement (or at least a lack of performance degredation) with the new drivers.

Tested applications are

Planetside (this game will wreck most computers...)
City of Heroes
Far Cry Demo
Far Cry Demo 2
UT2004 Demo

Hard to understand the reports here of all kinds of problems. Then again, I suppose people without problems rarely post about their lack of problems.

Yeah, not QUITE as common but we still hear about 'em. ;)

Nice to hear that things are goin' good for ya, I spose I could TRY the 4.4 Omega drivers and see what kind of differences there are.

Heh, with my 2.8C getting installed tonight I'll probly end up doing some benchmark comparisons for the 4.4 Omegas and my 3.9 Cats when I'm done playing with the CPU. ;)

I don't know maybe I am just lucky, but I have NEVER had any problems with ANY of the Catalyst drivers and I play just about every game available.

Same. Maybe it's just the settings I play at (no AA/AF), but I haven't even noticed something as minor as a drop in FPS.

Often times they extend beyond that so that if you WERE having issues, youd notice it even with AA/AF.

Lets just consider ourselves lucky.

Yeah, you remember the "review" I did of the 4.4 Catalysts? Well, it's basically the same. 3DMark03/PS2.0/Shadermark/AA/AF scores are all up but a couple of my more "important" benchmarks (3DMark2001, and Aquamark3) both still dropped about 300 points each.

I'm not saying that someone else might not have better luck, but it was just more of the same for me.

I lost like 100 points if that

Can I assumed that you've properly removed the drivers and done a re-install and it's still going on???

Just checkin'.

Yep. Hasn't caused me any grief, though, so I don't care what smartgart thinks is enabled.

Heh, there ya go.....that's the way to do it. Ignoring it is the easiest way to go.....but I wouldn't get into a habit of doing that with computers. ;)

I love this, all I need to do is look in this forum to see whether the next cats are out yet or not.

The 4.4's gave me a very big jump in performance in Battlefield Vietnam and got rid of the glitches when AF was enabled. :)

Heh, yeah.....gotta love it.

That's definitely nice to hear, I like it when people become further pleased with their video cards.....call me strange but it makes me happy. :)

I'll give you guys a little sneak peak at something, myself and a couple friends are well on our way to launching our own hardware review site. :D We're all in Canada where there isn't AS much of a "market" for reviewers as there is in your overcrowded US of A. ;)

For our first review I'm doing a VERY complete review/testing of my beloved 9800XT. The second review is what's gonna be the nice one.....a comparison of about 10 recent games about a half dozen different synthetic tests run on every catalyst release (using about three different AA/AF combinations EACH) from 3.9 to 4.4.....or 4.5 if it's out by the time I'm finishing it up.

Just though I'd let you guys know why I might not be posting AS much as normal.....'cus I'm gonna be working on the reviews for you, and I'll be sure to shoot everyone on here a link when the site goes live.

After I reformat I might retire these old 3.4's. Somebody promise me that at least one other version will work as good as they do...

Well I've heard they are quite the performers and honestly if you aren't having issues with any games I probly wouldn't switch. Hmm, makes me think maybe I should go give 'em a try. ;) And maybe I should start the review from 3.4 and go all the way to 4.4.....hmm

Feel free to do a review. I will give them a try but thats why I saved them from 3.4 to present.
