*** Official Catalyst 4.1 Thread ***

everything works well here with 4.1
i did gain 3ooo points in aquamark, and bf looks a little smoother.

Meh, CS wont run in OGL mode and D3D mode is like 40 fps. I dont know if its cuz I just installed this thing today and detonator rip wouldnt initialize to get rid of everything or what. We'll see after I format and install my new mobo. Arghhh, 3 days without CS.

I no longer have probs w/ Halo dropping 20fps w/ particles on "high" vs. "low", maintains same framerates (50-70fps w/ rig in signature)....woohoo!:D

In response to Brents last post (see other thread for it
:rolleyes: ) ;

Fair enough, Ive done it a few times and its worked for me as well. It just gets old that when people install several drivers on top of each other, and things dont work right, they complain about drivers, when its user error.

See thread for example, and logen99999's post;

Hopefully the 4.1s will speed up my BF load times. My buddy has a 2000+ w/ 256mb and a Ti4200 - and that bastard loads like 30 seconds faster than the system in my sig at the same res/detail lvl... WTF?

Here is a better one, someone claimed that the 4.1's lowered their CPU speed.

When I first installed the 4.1's I had an unusually low score in all my 3D benchmarks. I looked at the main screen of 3DMark 03, and it said my cpu speed was running at 1654mhz (it should have been at 2205 mhz). I then verified this with MBM5 which also stated that my CPU was runningg at 1654 mhz. I then uninstalled the 4.1's and my CPU was still running at 1654mhz. I then system restored it to just before I installed the 4.1's (I always create a restore point before a driver upgrade) and now it is back to 2205 mhz. Did I just have a bad Download? or is this just a flaw with the new driver? CHECK YOUR CPU SPEED WHEN LAUNCHING ANY 3DMARK APPLICATION. Please report here. Thanks.

Yeah, its always ATi's drivers

I'm building a new system next month with a Radeon 9800 Pro. So, I guess if I don't play ET, NWN or CS, then it's OK to start with these new 4.1s? Or should I use the ones on the driver CD first? It will probably be the Sapphire or ATI-OEM version of that video card. Any thoughts?

How do I use the Overdrive thing to view temperatures, overclock, etc. I have a Sapphire 256mb 9600XT if it makes any difference...

4.1's are working great in my games.
The new Overdrive options, while expected, are a neat little option.

Only problem is I have a hard time believing my card is running at 68degrees C. Seems I am right in the assumption as rage3d forums are reporting that there is a 20 degree addition to all 9800XT temps. Still a good release as it fixed some issues.

here's to a good 4.2 release.

CS worked fine after 2 complete video card removals from device manager and a driver uninstall. 1 week of punishing the card stock to break it in, then VGA Silecer + Ramsinks.

not sure of how performance is affected as i installed them late last night and havent benchmarked yet- but i know battlefield doesnt crash anymore when you press escape half way through a game to get back to the menu. With the 3.9's the screen always used to go currupted when you did that whatever resolution/ refresh rate you were in. So far so good :)

I know that compared to some of your 19K+ 3D-01 THESE SCORES are really not all that impressive for a 9800Pro. I wanted to ask if you thought if the new 4.1 driver will improve on my score, and also if you think I should uninstall/install, or just install over what I am currently using, which is what came on the installation CD. Thanks :D

In case my link above does not work.......I got 13294

Asus A7N8X Deluxe (ver 2.0)
Barton 2500+
768 PC2100
9800 Pro w/128Mb

No OC'ing was done to this system.

I would install the latest whether or not it increases your score.

is anyone else having call of duty problems? i cant even maintain a solid 60 fps... wtf? bte the only cats ive installed are these 4.1's. system in sig...

OK, but before I do, should I uninstall the old drivers first or just install over the existing drivers???

I recommend uninstalling the old ones, then boot into SAfe Mode and use Driver Cleaner to get the leftover ATi stuff off. Then reboot Normal and instlal the 4.1s Thats what I did and it worked great.

I guess I'll wait for the 4.2s to fix the ET problem. That's the game I play the most.

The profiles still do not work worth a shit. If you make mulitple profiles and switch them a few times you will lose AA/AF settings despite having them shown as on in the settings. Besides this problem they seem great.

I'm getting UE errors in Tribes 2. As soon as the game loads to the login, and I move the mouse, it gives me an error and kicks me out. Tried reinstalling drivers to no avail. I can't decide whether to go back to 3.8's or 3.10's and sacrfice not playing the max payne 2 demo. I guess it's back to 3.8's.

I am reading too many nightmare stories here...........I think I'll just wait for the next driver update. I have only had this card now for about 6 weeks or so anyway, and have had absolutely no problems with just the drivers that came on the installation CD.

I just got hooked on this CSI game. THe game ran fine and all then I updated my driver from 3.10 to the lastest for the Farcry demo. Now, my CSI is half way stuck in the bottom right. CSI is only available in the 800x600 res I believe and it takes up that much of the screen. Why won't it automatically audjust my screen size anymore for the game? What can I do?
Thanks

each to his own I suppose. I enjoy playing Tribes 2 thoroughly (sp). I wasn't there for Tribes 1, but don't bother bitching about how it was so much better than Tribes 2 and yadda yadda yadda. Maybe it was, who knows, but Tribes 2 is still fun to play, and I'll continue playing it untill there is not a server left to play on.

Tribes 2 UE's on any PC, with any hardware. I was in the beta, and if you played it when it first came out, you know EVERYONE had UE's, it didnt matter if it was nVidia, ATi, 3DFX, or what drivers. We told them in the beta forums that it wasnt ready, and it wasnt. Still, they released it and half the people couldnt even play it.

UE's are not near as common now, but they are still there for lots of people. So my post was true, Tribes 2 is a huge pile of crap.

Sorry, Im still bitter that they ruined the game, while not listening to the T1 vets.

I know, I did have it when it first came out. However with the 3.7's through 3.10's, I haven't gotten any. 4.1's I can't even get into the game without getting one. *shrugs* I've been having a mediocre day so far, so I was a little bitter back, but yeah I don't doubt you on the bugs in the release.

I didnt mean to come off sounding like a know it all about it. The beta was a huge mess, and the release was also. Everyone had problems, some far worse than others. I havent played it in so long, not since I was with Vanguard, and we were #1 on TWL. Did you delete all your .DSO's? I think thats what they are called, its been so long. There used to be a guide of sorts to get rid of the UE's. Search around and you might be able to get some help with them.

Yep, I did/recommend the exact same thing. Driver Cleaner is schweet.

Just installed the new version, no problems at all.

3DMark03 + 3.10 = 6513 avg.
3DMark03 + 4.1 = 6552 avg.

That seems like in runs alittle faster.
Runs great, but the temps in the Overdrive seem high about 68 idle, 72 load. Those temps suck if u ask me.
On a good note Far Cry AA now works.

And why do you think they suck? Just because that seems high? Thats just silly. Also...

1. The 9600XT's have an on-die thermal diode, and we are using that for thermal checks and as the reported temperature

2. The 9800XTs do not have an on-die thermal diode. They have an on package thermistor and an on-board thermal sensor chip. The thermistor is very close to the ASIC die and the thermal transfer is very close to being constant, so a constant delta is fine.

3. We've done HW qualification testing on 9800XT's in various configurations, and we've found that there's a very consistent delta differential between reported thermal data and measure ON DIE temperature.

4. We can use the reported thermal data from both sources for OC calibration

5. The offset of 20 degrees is an approximation of the temperature differential on 98's, and is only used in the control panel temperature report. This temperature does not need to be exact, it just needs to be roughly accurate, which it is within a degree or two. This was experimentally gathered information

6. Future changes might refine this process, as we deem fit. We are constantly developing this technology and from the 9600 onward, we plan to have (not guaranteeing we will though) on die thermal diodes in all of our products and in the future, other much more complex on die thermal logic.

ATI hasn't put out a solid driver set since the 3.7's, Every driver since will not render AA in Madden 2004 and COD locks up every 5 to 10 min.

Looks like I'm going back to Nvidia land... Got my Nforce 2 Ultra 400 board on order, Guess the latest Nvidia GF FX card is next!

ATI blows!

Funny but the driver seemed to work better then the older driver 3.* series. The only problem that got me now is they have a temp monitor in the overdriver feature of the Xt cards only. Now I see my Vga core temps nad Nasa we got a probelm! My temps idle at 70c and under load the overdrive kicks out for over 74 to 75c it kicks out. I called Ati and asked them for ref. temps but they didn't have any? Man so now i need to find out others if they have high temps or do I have a bad card? my scores in 2003mark did increase and I had the core 465/390 w no artifacts. scoreded 7177. BUt the temps are the same at stock speed not oc'ed.
Anyone notice there temps high on a stock Ati 9800xt not other brands. Thanks

the only issue i've had with the catalyst drivers (3.9-4.1 thus far) is that once the computer boots up, i get a window pop up of where i installed the drivers to. i wonder if anyone else gets this?

Every driver set after 3.7 absolutely requires Service pack 1 if running XP. I think you could have gotten away with it with 3.4 to 3.7 if you just installed all the updates seperately.

For some people who use the corporate edition, that means it might not work (unless you have the upgrade XP SP1 upgrade CD for your corporation) All single license OEM's and retails should upgrade fine.

Nvidia wil probably also require SP1 soon, If just for the idea that Microsoft will probably not release DX9.1 (if they ever do) without having SP1 (or even SP2) previously installed.

Personally I think its more of a microsoft "check" to make sure everyones XP is legal... If not, a lot of DX games won't play.

im getting articafts in vice city, and far cry sp demo. going back to 3.9s....

After testing the 4.1's, I've moved back to the Omega's Based on the 3.10 Cats.

The 4.1's ran slower (15 or so FPS in BF1942, and The FarCry demo was not playable at 1024x768 -> Frames dropping below 20).

With the Omega's FarCry runs smooth, and so does BF1942.

These have to be the only CATs released that I've had to go back to a previous set.

Cheers,

Mr. Pain
