Official BenQ FP241W Thread !!! Info, Pictures, Reviews

Will be eagerly awaiting your pics... Beast do you own both the VGA and Component cables for the Xbox 360? Im eager to see pic of the 360 connected with both... and your impressions. I have found gaming on my Xbox 360 on a monitor via VGA produces washed out colours and im interested to see component connected to it...

Ive played on many different displays and found component to be the better picture even though resolution wasnt as great...

Component cables only right now....no VGA to test unfortunately :) But in this case, sounds like a good thing. I know I've read other places where VGA looks superior to component, but that was all part of the 2407 fiascal haha.

Yes, the slightly distorted image won't be noticable. Hmm... I should rather say it would have not be noticable with CRT, but this is LCD and you 1080p singal will lost all of it's sharpness by imperfect interpolation to 1200. It will look worse than 720p, almost like 540p.
That is not correct.
ALL LCD monitors have one fixed resolution called "Native Resolution"
For BenQ FP241W it is 1920 x 1200, everything else needs to be interpolated.

You can also check the monitor manual

Hi,

I am very interested to buy the BenQ FP241W but I read in this forum people complaining about the stretching issue. I am looking for a monitor to use with my PC first and then to watch DVD and HDTV via HDMI.
If my DVD player is up-converting with aspect-ratio control and my cable box has an aspect-ratio control too, I should not have any stretching?

I am just concern about people recommending not to use this monitor with non-PC device

Please advice, Thank you

Stefan

For widescreen support, I usually check www.widescreengamingforum.com . Back in the day, I know I needed to mess with the FOV to compensate for the lack of widescreen resolutions, that might have been fixed now though(havent played Q3A in years, but seeing the Air Map(Q3DM17 if I remember correctly) brought back some memories).

And I suppose the two bars on the sides are tolerable, they are about 8.5% of the screeen real-estate each, thats gonna be kinda annoying when I watch those old shows in 4:3...

Just hooked up the monitor to an XBOX 360 (Component) at 1080i.... Good lord this thing is SHARP! I haven't played around with the settings on the XBOX before (it's a unit at my work place) so initially it was at 480p and I was kind of disappointed, but having changed to the correct settings...this thing is mind blowing.

Taking pictures now :) Be back.

15 minutes later update...

POSSIBLE FATAL FLAW DISCOVERED:

Setup: XBOX 360, 1080i settings, Component Inputs

IMAGE QUALITY: Sharp as a tack, almost too sharp

FLAW: Whenever ANY movement is shown, some serious red and green horizontal scan lines start to faze in and out like static. In "Marvel Ultimate Alliance" the scan lines were unbearable. In "Amp'ed" it was present, but COULD be ignored, however its terribly distracting.

Possibilities: Could be my BenQ unit? I need someone else to confirm this with an XBOX 360. I'm going to RMA it to Newegg this afternoon.

TEST #2 tonight: Sony DVD player connected with an HDMI cable to see if I can isolate the problem. Could be just the component inputs? Maybe worse...

Uploading the photos now to show everyone what I'm talking about...

Yes, you'll still have the problem. The 16:9 picture output by your DVD player or cable box will be stretched to 16:10.

I'm about to order a 24" lcd soon. Is it definite this monitor stretches? I plan to hook up a regular DVD player to it to play widescreen movies and needless to say, my pc. I got lost in all the discussion and technical talk. So anyone kind enough to just clarify for me. Thank you.

UPDATE ON MY LAST POST:
I just called Newegg to get an RMA on this problem, fyi everyone....NO CAN DO. This problem is only warranted through BenQ apparently. Time for the circus to begin

I'd just like to point out that the Dell 2407WFP A03 is a great monitor...with the general consensus being that the majority of the 2407's problems are fixed. :D
I believe you did already agree here (Post # 392) that 2407 isn't GREAT monitor.
Or does not being perfect make great monitor???

Anyway the Dell 2407WFP is far from being a great monitor and if you have such a strange need to promote the 2407 in the "Official BenQ FP241W Thread" at least you should get your facts right.

All you need to go to Dell's Monitor Forum and do some reading.
Here just one example from many posts and some are being deleted.
Posted by " all the facts" Dell Monitor Forum, reply #200
Dell 2407WFP version A03. current problems list:
(1) The 1600x1200 fixed aspect (1:1) has NOT been fixed. The 1:1 option is still grayed out at 1600x1200. This is not good when you have an ATI graphic card.
(2) The inability to set 1600x1200 mode into 4:3 is one thing, but having this monitor forget about 4:3 setting is even more annoying. Whenever I run older games or other apps that uses fixed resolutions (such as starcraft, diablo2 etc), I'll have to navigate through the menu and set the 4:3 mode, then when monitor switches back to wide screen resolution of desktop, it seems forget about such setting and makes me navigate the menu to set 4:3 every single time whenever I start those programs.
(3) Same problem with PIP, input always defaults to S-video no matter what, when I switch to different input (i.e. component) and then shuts pip off, when I turn pip back on it always resets back to s-video.
(4) Moving mouse over bright backgrounds leaves a shimmery yellow, pink or green trail a few pixels wide on the A02 and A03.
(5) The whole screen shimmers when scrolling fast.
(6) Video tearing on 720p over both component/DVI when in 1:1 mode See http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&message.id=58435 and http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&message.id=62689
(7) Incorrectly displays 1080i over component giving a usable image.
(8) Vertical and horizontal banding in multimedia and gaming modes.

Read the TFT Central article about BenQ FP241W. In the same article they did also mention Dell's 2407
The Dell 2407WFP was another popular 24" model, but was let down in its support of true HD resolutions. While the Dell stumbled with interlaced signals and reportedly progressive scan at 1080 lines, the BenQ can support both 1080i and 1080p making it a truly compliant HD monitor.

Make sure it's not your cable. Do you have an HDTV to see if it's the XBOX or the game or disc corruption or try another type of connection.

I having nothing to test this monitor except my PC. I hope I don't have the same problem as you???

I tried two XBOX360 units (retail as well as a developer's kit), the cable that is connected to it runs fine on the LCD television that it was originally hooked up to, so I highly doubt its the cable. I wish I had another cable to bullet proof that theory though ASIA. We might have another one lying around the office from teh Dev kit version *crossing fingers*

I'm going to test component inputs on the Sony DVD player I have at home ALONG with an HDMI hookup just to make sure.

DieHard...

Newegg will only RMA this monitor if it has dead pixels. Any other internal problems have to be dealt straight through BenQ. I just registered my product and sent in my request for repair. I've never dealt with BenQ so I hope this transaction is bearable.

Have you try using the 480p or 720p setting?

PROBLEM SOLVED!

This monitor is not a lemon as I had hastily announced. With all the problems current LCD's have with displaying a true 1080i image, I was quick to judge and I apologize for making a big ass scene over nothing....I'm thoroughly embarrassed.

ISSUE: Faulty video cable (thanks for the tip Asia...the easiest fixes are often the best :( )
It was a sh*tty cable that I was using. I guess i never noticed it the scan lines on the LCD tv it was hooked up to (on the BenQ it was crazy apparent).

Now that the picture is displayed correctly, the image quality at 1080i is jaw-dropping. Make no mistake about it. No ghosting, artifacts, refresh rate problems or anything. If someone else has a 1080i available connection, you'll know what I'm talking about.

720p and 480p are fine as well.

Don't scare me like that, again! :)

I was reading the warranty policy (find out it's 3 years) and trying to see what friends have Xbox 360 so I can test it. But, what a sigh of relief!

Anyway, post some xbox pics!

I just got my BenQ FP241W from Newegg today, just an hour ago. I love it! Beats my Viewsonic VP191B 19 inch in size. I'm going to do a little review later this weekend focused on fast-pace FPS gaming (hardcore Quaking, I'm mostly number 1 on the scoreboard doing railing, sniping). I'll would like to quickly confirm, there is no lag! I just play some Half-Life source at 1920x1200, great response rate, black levels is good, blacklight is uniform, no dead pixels and more. Great Quality! Believe me!

The one and only downside is 1:1 pixel mapping (fixed aspect ratio). But, there are ways around it, and I'm using it for my computer (aka: media center).

Awesome!. I was just about to post, now we all going to learn how good BenQ is handling the RMA.
One thing is sure Dell is very good with RMA, many 2407 owners report that.
Guess practice makes perfect :) OK maybe that was not funny.

Seriously... what do we have to do to push BenQ to release a version of the FP241W(Z) with improvements to the original release, i.e. 1:1 pixel mapping, response times, whatever... I was going to wait for the FP241WZ, but if it's got issues with BFI and inherits the lack of 1:1 pixel scaling, then I don't know.

How easy is to add that functionality in reference to the internals, etc?

Sigh.

Either 720p or 1080i....I have the check the output. It's my roommates Sony player, so I'll read the manual first and post the details when I take the pictures.

I say that it looks great, even more so since it's interlace scan.
With real 1080p source, it's going to look even more awesome

try 1080i, then when my dvi hdmi cable comes in, ill try 1080p. HOpefully it doesnt fill the screen.

Can you check if the DVD player has any aspect ratio control.

Thanks for the "1080i, XBOX360" pictures

Yes I will. What am I looking to test? I know Danger posted Quake 3 images concerning aspect ratio control. I assume I'm looking for the same types results.

Just picked mine up from Canadacomputers (thanks to the guy who tipped that one off!). It's HUGE, then again this is coming from someone who's using a 15" CRT :D

I'll take pics later on of maybe some apps like media center and whatnot running in Vista.

I've got school work that needs tending to, be back later!

I'm the one that owns a 2407, Heinz, so maybe you are the one who should get your facts right. I'm incredibly happy with my 2407 (A02 even) and have been from day 1. A friend of mine bought one as well and he's a happy customer too. I'm just pointing out an alternative for those who were looking to the BenQ monitor as *THE* multimedia monitor, since now we know that in its current form, it's quite flawed.

Well I promised pics as well, I'll update the thread as I take more.

First up: Motorola HD Cable box. DVI and HDMI look identical as expected. 720P looks good (it's stretched to the full screen in both DVI and HDMI) but 1080i looks much better (also stretched both DVI and HDMI)

XBOX360 Via component showing DOA4. Again, there is stretching in both 720 and 1080 and no new OSD options to change this. Also, as before and expected, 1080 looks better than 720:

http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/3623/img0477ka1.jpg
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/7397/img0478ex1.jpg
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/8876/img0479oe0.jpg

So we can see from these pictures that at least on the composite there does not appear to be stretching, although I didnt do an exact measurement, the scenes in dune did appear to be right. As shown with the incredibles there is a larger black bar as should be expected.

Dune again over SVideo, I took the second pic with flash so you can get a sense of the size of the black bars, again to my eyes everything looks about right (and the same as is expected with composite)

http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/7968/img0480ix6.jpg
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/1483/img0481ji5.jpg

Dune again over component this time. I'm at a loss for words, I am not sure what is going on here because it TOO HAS BARS. I'm gonna have to check Dune on my xbox and HDTV to make sure the bars aren't encoded on the disk, again one pic with flash on to show dimensions.

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/7751/img0482lg8.jpg
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/7036/img0483lo6.jpg
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/4219/img0484vi9.jpg

I'll check the DUNE disk and write some initial impressions. For now I'm getting the Benq to its final resting place on my desk. Again, let me know if there are any requests for any particular sources, I have access to most types of sources.

Ok, so I've checked the Dune DVD on another HD monitor, my 720P sammy HDTV and the bars seem to be encoded on the disk.

--Initial Impressions--

So it would appear everyone's fears have been confirmed. Every source I checked the OSD and no 1:1 pixel mapping options appeared. This is a minor disappointment for me but I'm sure its a deal breaker for some. If you wanted a single display for your desk for PC and HD consumer electronics, the Benq 241W is NOT your ideal solution. That said, it seems to be an awesome desktop PC solution that has additional bells and whistles. Luckily for me it was between the dell 2407 and the Benq, and after all the initial frustrations of the 2407 its nice to have a nice display that actually works. Let me know if anyone has any particular requests for sources, I'll see what I can do. In the mean time, anyone have good sources for desktop wallpapers, 1920x1200 wallpapers specifically?

I leave you with some final eye candy.

Yeah I found that out today that they have it instock but I swear never to buy from them(Canada Computers) ever again. I'm still waiting if Besbuy or Futureshop will have them.

Do they have silver or black or both?

I went to the Richmond Hill location (North York was sold out), and they only had 2 there, both were black, and I took one, so they have one left now!

Hello all,

NCIX.com just gave me a call since my order (BenQ FP241W) has now arrived and I can now pick it up.

Here is where I need your advise on, yesterday when I was browsing NCIX's website for new arrivals, I found the following link for an Acer 26" Oh My" AL2616WD LCD monitor

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=20947&vpn=ET.G16WP.001&manufacture=Acer:

Its a 26" LCD monitor with HDCP for $50 dollars less in Canadian currency than what Im going to get BenQ FP241W for.

I am now confused and tempted to move my deposit to the Acer LCD and leave the BenQ alone.

Here are more facts:

NCIX does not expect to receive any of these monitors till the middle november.

Should I wait and go for the Acer instead? Anyone have experiences with their 24" monitor line? Care to share your opinions since I am not able to find any information about this monitor from the web. Cheers!

I did a quick search on Google on Acer AL2616WD. I can't find much information. The official Acer website doesn't have that model listed. So, it is unknown what specification (don't see it in NCIX.com), what panel technology (TN, S-IPS, S-PVA, P-MVA), what inputs, no reviews, no hands-on pictures, backlight condition, and so on.

Very risky, you don't know what you going to get. In my opinion, if you really want 26 inch, you should wait until there is more facts and reviews.

Hey, it's up to you. I'm happy with my BenQ FP241W.

Can you explain little more about the stretching. (Motorola HD Cable}
The first picture looks like standard TV, not wide screen and not stretch on the sites.
Not sure what the lines are, if I'm right it should be black

Does the Motorola HD Cable box.has aspect ratio control ?

Great no stretching, aspect ratio most likely controled by the player

XBOX360 Via component
All stretch
No aspect ratio control
Next time please take the picture with flash or more light. Because of the black frame and dark background it's hard to see if there is letterbox or not.

Acording to this article the aspect ratio can be cotroled either by the TV or by the video source.
By John P. Falcone CNET.com
Make sure your new TV has aspect-ratio control. The next two pages suggest several solutions to common aspect-ratio problems. But they will work only if your TV or the video source, be it a satellite tuner, cable box, or DVD player has aspect-ratio control. In general, all wide-screen HDTVs, most HDTV set-top boxes, and a few new 4:3 TVs can control aspect ratio in some way. Many DVD players have Zoom functions, and all can be set to work with both 4:3 and 16:9 TVs, but few have additional aspect-ratio controls.

Chi Mei makes a 22" panel that right now Acer and Samsung are selling as well. They are large but cheap TN 6-bit panels (that's why they get 5ms)...This 26" panel is also most likely Chi Mei as the specs look the same...Chi Mei also makes a 24" panel and 30" and larger...

If you don't care about quality color and a cheap base and only want a large monitor with bleed through on the top and bottom, then go for it...(don't expect the same quality as this Benq FP241W or other higher quality 8 bit panels)...

You get what you pay for...bigger is not always better...I mean if you really want bigger buy the 32" Westinghouse for 799 from Newegg. Now that's a real deal because it's 16:9 and has all the inputs in the world...

I'm still holding off but the FP241W is one of the better lcd's out there right now till they release the Z model and hopefully fix the 1:1 issue which for me is important although I know I'm knitpicking and for all those of you who have just purchased it and have no dead pixels, I'm happy for you guys and definitely ENJOY!

I'm also interested in seeing what the real competitors will release (you can't compare this Benq to the Acer's which again are Chi Mei Taiwanese 6-bit panels... oh and by the way, Dell has ordered 100,000 of these Chi Mei panels in 22" and other sizes so Dell will be selling these too soon as well as Viewsonic, Samsung, Philips and others)...

The market will be flooded very shortly from every maker with these Chi Mei panels. That's why I *know* the price wars have ONLY just begun!!! From now till the 1Q or 2Q of 2007, the prices are going to tank which can only be good for us waiting for GOOD QUALITY panels like this Benq to improve...

Does the FP241W use a dual-link or single-link DVI connector?

Also, does anyone know Benq's dead pixel policy on this? Thanks.
