Odd Problem with SATA drives

Alright - I've got a problem I cannot seem to solve. Everytime, i kid you not i installed the OS 20 times in 5 days, I format n install XP onto my 200gb Maxtor SATA hd, boots up fine, does everything good. I install SP2, restart... suddenly windows/system32/config/system folder is missing or corrupt. It does this EVERY time, and I even went out and bought another 100gb Maxtor SATA drive, did it to that one also off the bat.

Now, when i dont install sp2, the drive runs fine, but i'd like sp2.... as im picky like that. I've tried two drives, same line, same company... any one have any ideas? Help... :confused:

LOL..same deal I am having. Not 20 times in 5 days, but about every 3 to 5 days, I get that error.

I have tried everything... The thing I am chasing now is that Windows Setup kept making a Extended/Logical partition for Windows to install on. This time, I made a primary partition with PartitionMagic. I am at a lost too.

Yeah sucks doesnt it, i was considering purchasing a Windows XP Pro w/ SP2 already, since i work at best buy n can get employee pricing. But not sure if that will solve the problem!... sigh

been looking at the WD 74gb Raptor... maybe ill have to look into trying out on of those bad boys... to just load an OS and basic tools onto, and use the 200gb for music/movies/games... that is if i cannot find a solution to my current problem :p
 
You getting the SP2 straight from MS? Or do you have a disk with it? If it's a disk, try getting it from the windowsupdate site instead and see if that makes a difference. Also, have you tried the different SATA ports and/or cables?
 
It's straight from the windows update site.... was going to RMA the drive, but it did it to another Maxtor SATA drive... so going to hold off for the time being.
 
are you installing any hardware updates from MS with sp2, I had problems pop up because those just got tacked on to the install process when I wasn't paying attention.
 
Have you tried slipstreaming SP2 on your WinXP cd, google it and you'll find a guide.
 
have u tried a different sata cable?
not all hardware u get can be perfect.
i had a bad SATA cable but luckily i had read a post about it a couple days before so it was easy for me to track down the problem.
 
This one does not sound like a hard drive to me. What are the odds that the OS installs the system file in the exact same sector every time? And that the SMART doesnt see it? IIRC the system file houses all the information regarding the hardware and it must be getting accessed as the error occurs. I would check memory first, then look for CPU overheating etc. Next I would look for spyware/viruses. Yes I know you are reinstalling and probably reformatting each time, but are you networked to other machines? Funny how the crash always happens after you run updates from the internet.
 
I'll try a different SATA cable, this install has been up n running for bout a week, but i like some of the options within SP2, just havent installed it. Working good so far, mp3's... games.. I am networked to another pc. I'll look into slipstreaming SP2 into the install.

The help is vey nice, thought nobody was going to notice lol. :rolleyes:
 
Did you try a different SATA cable? Did it work? I'll bet you a buck that was the problem, SATA cables fails like no ones business Ive seen, especially if they are a little stretched.
 
more than 30 days old. i hope he's figured out the problem by now...
