Odd overclocking results...anyone know why?

Allright, the system I am doing this on is the one in my sig. I can hit 2.03Ghz (225x9) stable as a rock, stock voltages, 1:1 ram. I bump my system up to 2.07 (230x9) and its not stable. I figured I hit my rams max, so i up the voltages to there max (2.8 i believe). No dice, still not stable, so I set a divider on my ram, still nothing. Maybe cpu needs more juice, upped the volts to 1.65. Nothing. Tried again, upping it to 1.8 and then my NB, SB, and HTT bus I all gave a step up on the volts, as I am not sure waht the safe levels on those are. Still unstable. Anyone know, could I need even more volts, or could 225 really be my chips limit? Maybe I have to turn down the HTT multiplier (where woudl this be found in my BIOS)
 
some chips just don't overclock... remember, they're manufactured to handle a given speed -- anything over that is just gravy.

btw, I can't see any sig, so what is the chip/mobo?
 
seems like 225 is ur chip's max
just wondering, is ur chip multiplier locked?
 
potroast - its a A64 2800+ and a KV8 Pro

STIFFY - yes and no. A64's are all unlocked, but the multi can only be brought down, not up. The onyl expecption is the FX-53, which can go up or down.

MikeP - I certainly doubt it can, but when I put a divider on and it was at like 187 (under the stock rated speed) it was still unstable, ruling out ram.

It is true. Quite a bummer. Its also why the FX-53 is so much more expensive than a 3800+ but the performance is almost idecticle. One will overclock bettter, you pay a premium for that.
 
You should drop to the 8x and see if you can go higher. My 3200+ only gets to 228 w/ the 11x, but i can get 300 using an 8x. also, i know some kt800 pro boards dont have the best agp/pci lock, so that can be the problem also. You should adjust the HT multi as well. right now its probably at 4, so change it to 3 is you can. It probably under a setting called Hypertransport ratio or maybe LDT ratio. if after changing the cpu and ht multipliers and you have a divisor to keep your ram running at a speed it can do, then you have hit the limit of the board.

That's not necessarily true. I have some Corsair PC3200 XMS RAM, and while it could handle a 220MHz FSB at 1:1, a 230MHz FSB would crash until I changed the ratio to 3:2, where it barely loaded Windows before crashing. I just upgraded the RAM to the sticks in my sig, and have no trouble OC'ing to 238 FSB with 1:1 at 2.5-3-3-7. What you're describing is exactly what happened to me, and upgrading the RAM fixed the problem.
