I ordered this (at a lower price than shown):

and it came yesterday. Dead as a door knob. I'm RMAing it to newegg and sending it back for replacement today.

I don't have much stuff form OCZ...the item is rated for only 3 stars...so maybe this was a bad idea. Also, the damn thing would not fit in this usb 3.0 enclosure I have for a 2.5-inch drives. I'm not planning to use it that way, but I wanted to test SSD to SSD backups over a usb 3.0 connection. Seems like that ought to fly.
 
For the past few years I haven't heard much good about OCZ. From what I know they use to b e one of the best, but as you know time tends to change that with some companies. :p

This is not always the manufacturer. I believe hard drives arrive DOA most of the time because of bad packaging and being mistreated during shipping. Although I would assume a SSD could take way more abuse than a hard drive.

The hard plastic casing holding the drive was broken...and newegg shipped it in an envelop. However, SSDs are supposed to be immune to damage due to shocks, though I guess a hard one could ruin poor solder connections.
 
OCZ used to make crap video cards. They had a good period when they were the primary manufacturer of Sand Force based SSDs. It seems that at about the time the bougth PC P&C they let their SSD business slip. Maybe their recent Indilinx purchase represents a renewed focus on SSDs.
 
I'd bet 99% of DOA stuff is broken during shipment. I worked for a ... uhhh... "brown shipping company" for a couple of weeks and (srsly) it's a miracle that any item ever makes it to the customer in working condition.

You just missed out on the divine, metaphysical intervention.

There are better SSDs than this one though. You should have asked for your money back and counted it as a blessing.
 
I got the replacement ssd today. I have it in a USB 3.0 enclosure . Tested it with crystal mark 3.0. This this is super slow. Is this because of the enclosure,USB 3.0, or the drive? The speeds are similar to hard drive speeds.
 
USB (even USB3) adds a few ms of latency. So you will not get good SSD random reads / writes.
 
My OCZ Vertex 2 has been rock solid for over a year now. Can't speak for their recent products though, no experience.

OCZ's products have definitely improved from the nightmare that was Agility 2 and Vertex 2, considering it was a gamble on which internals you were actually getting.

OCZ as a company is very shady, but honestly, their SSDs have improved leagues beyond what they were a year ago.

I'm still rocking an Agility 1 64GB in my system, and it's had heavy usage since '10.
 
It seems that most ssd's have issues for the first 6 months or so after release; intel, ocz, crucial have all had issues (i'm sure i'm missing some). I have 4 vertex 2's that have been in a raid 0 for about a year now without any issues, i keep up with firmware upgrades fairly often. The biggest factor for me going forward besides raw performance is how the companies handle the RMA process, in your case dealing with newegg is almost always fantastic, but i have read horror stories about OCZ RMA drives.
 
I have an Agility 2 here, nothing but good to say about it too (as far as reliability etc. since day 1). The loudest remarks will always be by those who have had an issue, so I'll just add my positive experience too.

I'm no OCZ fan but receiving a dead drive is just bad luck.

They are getting better but have a steep road to climb before I'd trust them.

They were after the "GB per $" crowd and that's what ya get.....Ya get what ya pay for. ;)

Breaking a SSD during shipment... sounds extremely HARD. I wouldn't call any SSD "fragile".

No, I think when SSDs are DOA (such as quite a few of the OCZ ones not so long ago) it has nothing to do with the shipment - unlike with HDDs and many other components where it is indeed a major factor.

It's not the SSD (although the Petrol is slower than most good SSDs), but it's the chipset that's inside your particular USB 3.0 enclosure that's limiting the maximum sequential speeds.
