I've been just playing around with overclocking tools just to see how they work, not overclocking anything but just looking at it and not saving it while I await the arrival of my TRUE. I did notice a few discrepancies that had me wondering about a few things.

1. My memory; I realized that when I installed my Mushkin Redline DDR2-1000 that I only set the timings to their stock 5-5-5-12 and forgot to set the right mhz so they were running at DDR-800. Well I fixed that in the bios. My problem is that as you can see in the image below; my timings and DRAM frequency are correct (1000/2=500) so I have that down but in the SPD my memory is listed as "Max bandwidth - PC2-6400 (400mhz)"

Is this normal, and can anyone explain why it says this?


2. My Video Card. I have an EVGA 8800GT Akimbo SC which is factory oc'd to 720/2000 See: EVGA | EVGA 8800GT AKIMBO

When viewing the video card in both Rivatuner and EVGA Precision it is listed as 720/1000, the memory is only running at 1k. Now I've not tested this during load on the video card, is this throttling to save power or how can I test to see that it is infact running at it's full factory when I need it to?

Also; while we're at it.. is it worth my overclocking my video at some point? (I have a second one on the way too btw) or is this factory oc the best I'll get and I should just leave software oc'ing of my card alone?

Your ram will run as fast as you can get it to.
The reported speed is what it is sold as, not what its capable of.
As you can see the SPD holds timings for 500MHz which is clearly a lot faster.

1000MHz DDR = 2000MHz.

Its worth overclocking if you need more speed.
 
You would have to ask the programmer who wrote the program precisely what how and why that entry is determined and what it means. IMO it is crap notice below where the same program has correctly read your SPD data and indicates the memory has a pre-programmed EPP (extended performance profile) for 500MHz (ddr2 speed 1000MHz). This is not a JEDEC standard and perhaps the part of the program that determines "max bandwidth" disregrards non-JEDEC information /shrug. Also in question is if your motherboard can read and use the EPP. You have the base timings and required memory voltage indicated by the program but typically there are sub-timings that are not shown that the boards bios would read and implement for high speed operation. You could enter the timings manually but the best way would be to use a program like spdtool to read the entire SPD settings and if your board had manually adjustable sub-timings adjust them as well.

For the video card it is the same deal, the memory is clocked on both the rising and falling edge of a clock "tic". So the program is telling you the clock speed but the memory actually tranfers data 2x per "tic" for double data rate. So if the clock says 1000MHz the data rate is 2000MHz


Trouble with all these types of programs is that they read the same thing different ways and present it also in different ways. Once you understand the programs and how the guy who wrote it intends to say, it becomes more clear. Trick is to figure out wth the guy was thinking.

As for the memory, I had to obviously set all the timings and speed manually in the bios myself. I didn't know the fact about the video; thanks for letting me know - it makes total sense. :)
