OC Unstable!?

Alright so I oc'ed my opteron 146 to 280x10 w/ 1.45vcore
And gigaram pc3700 memory at 233 6:3:3:2.5. 2.7v highest vdimm for asrock
So I checked for stability by using prime95 for like 6 hours total, superpi,4000% memtest w/ 0 errors, and 3dmark2001se, occt, and aquamark3. I was able to pass them all w/ flying colors, but for some reason while i was using wmp and powerpoint and surfing the web and it randomly restarted. I'm not sure why though, how could it be unstable after all that testing?! Also I noticed that I couldn't use sp2004, it kept restarting a couple minutes after starting blend test. So i'm no longer sure if its stable. Any more way to test it?

Which BIOS are you using? The problem doesn't sound like heat so you'd think stress testing for longer wouldn't help. For prime which test did you use? You could try a few hours of small FFTs as it sounds like memtest should have taken care of the RAM. Also, what's your AGP Aperture set at to get that OC?

I'm using OCWB1 bios for my Asrock 939dual sata2. I just used whatever made sense choice. small ffts? Well under bios, AGP aperture is set as 128mb because my 9600xt has 128mb, isn't that how it works?

NVM figured out what the FFTs was. I'll c how it goes.

Restarts are linked to memory...but it passed mem test...hmmmm

If it suddenly froze, it'd be the cpu..but who knows anymore thesedays

Did you reformat before you built the system?

Yes and no. I built it and had a old hdd from my old machine, but then i bought a 160gb hitachi sata drive. And reformatted and reinstalled everything i had b4, and now i'm using both the old and new.

That's a good BIOS.

There's no good rule for AGP aperture. As i understand it, it's the amount of system memory that can be used by the GPU. Anyways, what kinda sucks about this board is for the higher OCs you have to lower that setting, while certain games like BF2 run much smoother if you use 256MB, as BF2 has over 300 megabytes of textures. I have yet to see a good reason to set it lower (other than overclocking with this board ) as the RAM isn't tied up unless the space is needed. To get 280 to even post I have to lower the Aperture size (haven't tried 128, but 64 works up to 290.)

Also, do your vcore/CPU multiplier settings stay saved in that BIOS? My changes to only those settings don't stick, and I don't know if it's my board, a bad BIOS flash (doubt it) or what.

Good luck getting it stable!

alright i was running prime95 FFTs and then like it BSOD. But, I was fiddling w/ the case cover and like i think i might have touched the power cable for my old ide hdd, because i remember whenever i push against the molex connector, the hdd makes a click noise, because it restarts or something, so i might have something to do w/ that. Because it was running fine otherwise. So i'm running prime again, probably gonna leave it on for another 5 hours if i can lol JUST TO MAKE SURE.

Also all my bios settings stick. Though i'm not quite sure what ur talking about.
Are u sure the agp apeture size affects oc? Never heard of it, but i'm a noob, wat do i no.

What I mean with the BIOS settings is i'll set say 9x multiplier and 1.45 volts and when i reboot it's at 10x multipler and stock volts. You'd know if it happened.

Yeah, i'm sure the AGP Aperture setting affects overclocking. I didn't believe it until i was able to get up to 290 FSB last night by lowering it to 64. Though it's said that you just need it at 128MB or lower to get the higher OCs. It has to do with the southbridge chip. You should be okay with your 128.

Hmm thats interesting, because I wasn't able to get over 290mhz when i did try. May b i'll try to lower it to 64. And yea my multipliers do stick. One time, my system booted up at 4x200. It was weird. May b I loaded optimized settings and forgot to change it.

alright heres what happened after like 4 hours of testing prime 95 w/ FFTs.

Decided to test for stability by running memtest, super pi 32m, and prime 95 high FFTS at the same time.

Heres a pic:

I'd say it's pretty conclusive that it's the CPU. You've failed Prime95 small FFTs when you tried it. It really shouldn't fail like ever if you're stable. Vcore mod time! Or just lower the OC a little.

it didnt fail. he stopped it.

Whoa my bad. I guess all is good then, though I'd be more comfortable testing for like 8 hours instead of 4, but it does seem stable enough.

6 hours on prime95 is by no means necessarily stable. I have had oc fail prime 95 around 8 and 12 hours. Need to make it 24hours before I'm convinced.

Alright i just finished superpi 32m. Memtest 0 errors after like 9 hours and prime no fail.
I think its stable... After being at load 100% cpu usage for 9+ hours. I think its ok.
I think i should get the award for slowest completion of 32m. lol
