Ok, I have an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe and I just went into the BIOS and did a 5% overclock. I never OC'ed a cpu before but I do have some basic understanding of how it works (very basic). I'm trying to get my P4 3.4ghz up to 4ghz. What software can I use to test the stability of my OC? Right now I have CPU-Z.

CPU-Z is not a tool to test your overclock, it will only tell you the clock speed of you chip and some other data

There is really no set way of testing an overclock, many people will say many different things

One program inparticular that a lot of people use is called Prime95

personally i just load up 3Dmark and loop her overnight, if she don't crash then thats fine by me.

and like i said, other people will have other opinions

To test your CPUs stability you will want a test that puts your CPU to 100% load and you will want to run it for about 24 hours. Prime 95 works very well for this although it doesnt quite do the 100%. I use prime 95 and UT2004 running together for 24 hours.

For just testing your Rams OC by itself you can use Memtest86. Link: http://www.memtest86.com/

I guage my PC's stability by running United Device's UD agent. If it can run for weeks non stop, well that's what I call stability.

There is no substitute for 100 percent stability. Alot of braggers around here claim outrageous overclocks, but what they don't tell you is that it runs only long enough to get a screenshot of CPU-Z or maybe only one pass of a benchmark. Hell, my CPU can run 2.8ghz long enough for that, but even at 2.7ghz it will crash after 20 minutes or so. 2.6ghz...runs for weeks on end without crashing or needing to reboot.

prime95 and rthdribl are good to heat up that cpu (I know rthdribl is mostly for videocards, but it does work the cpu).

Sandra has a decent burn-in
