Im building a new system soon, still deciding on a couple of parts. Right now i think im gonna get G.Skill 2x2GB DDR2-1000 (Im surprised it doesnt use micron chips) to put in a GA-X38-DQ6. Ive already got a q6600 G0. Ive heard that Q6600s can reach 3.6 Ghz and when utilizing a 9x mult. you would have 400 fsb with 800Mhz on the RAM at 1:1. That means that DDR2-800 is perfect for a 3.6 OC, but is it more beneficial to lower the mult. to 7x, turn the fsb up to 500, and run with DDR2-1000 at 1:1? I want to run with the most powerful setup possible, and if i can benefit from RAM faster than DDR2-800 i would like to do it.

Yes, sorta, if you can get the board to do it and thats a big IF. MCH/MB thermals will need to be excellent. And while the G0's are good OCers your target is agressive on air. Go for it !. At worst you will end up somewhere around 475 FSB and even then having memory rated higher than 800MHz will make OCing a walk in the park as you have taken concerns about the memory holding you back out of the picture.

but 7 x 500 = 3.5GHz memory at 1000MHz
and 9 x 400 = 3.6GHz memory at 800MHz
and 500MHz of cpu speed is much more powerful than 200MHz of memory bandwidth.

The thing to do is get to 9 x 400 and start working up until the cpu craps out on you and with PC1000 memory you will not have to worry about it limiting you.

Also if the PC 1000 memory will not run 4 4 4 12 at 800-900 speeds 800MHz memory that will run at 4 4 4 12 and due to its high quality allow you to get close to 450 FSB (3.8GHz) without having to loosen the memory timings would be better.

you will mainly find that the high speed stuff trades lax timings and higher voltages in able to acheive the high speeds. The really quality 2 x 2GB ram that will do 4 4 4 12 at 2.1V or less at high speed is rare and still expensive Newegg has only 2 choices.

In memory benchmarks you may see a difference, but in the real world? No difference at all.

Yea I was originally looking at getting the OCZ 9200 Reaper or Flex, but I really want 4 gigs of ram and I was worried about using 4x1 instead of 2x2. Now however, Im starting to think I would not have a problem using 4x1 ddr2-1150 if Im using it at its rated speeds or less. Of course, I dont think I would see a very large difference in real world applications (gaming) between 4x1 1066 at 4-4-4-12 and 2x2 1000 at 5-5-5-15.

(damnit...I just noticed that the prices of the G.Skill just rose, they were $129.99 yesterday, now 179.99 )

Im also hoping my cooling is adequate, Im getting an ultra120 extreme combined with a noctua nf-p12 120mm fan (http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=14&lng=en) and 5 noctua nf-s12-1200 120mm. As you can tell im also going for a quiet rig.

Im just really mad about that ram, it was at such a good price, I should have bought it.

Anyone have any experience OCing with a ga-x38-dq6 and what kind of ram were you using?
