So ive had my e6300 since about may-april, been running it with a 7600gt so haven't really worried about overclocking much, but upgrading to an 8800 here in a few days so working out to see what i can push my cpu to.

I used this thread as a baseline to help out some: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1198647

The problem is, i got it up to 7x333 and it was running stable there, almost zero change in system temps. But up and around 340- and above it started getting screwy. 340-345 would sometimes post, but not boot into windows, and anything above 345 wouldnt post at all. So i figured it was about time to notch up the vcore, did that but to no avail, still couldnt get it to post no matter how much power i gave it. Running back at 7x333 with no problems at all, good temps and stable. I'm pretty sure i should be able to get higher than this, but not sure what the problem i'm running into is.

System Specs:
C2D E6300
GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3
OCZ S.O.E 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) 5-5-5-12 (x2)
BFG Tech BFGR76256GTOCE GeForce 7600gt 256mb

any other info anyone would need just lemme know.

Well i double checked my bios, pretty sure i disabled all the right stuff to not run into any problems there, just tried to run prime95 (expected to get more than this, so just ran a pcmark and 3dmark when i booted up 7x333 first with no problems at all) and get an error and it stops after 3-4 seconds of running. So it seems that this isnt stable at all either, not sure why pcmark and 3dmark both ran without problems (higher score also). Gonna take it back down some for now.

Set your ram to 5-5-5-18

Make sure you're running a divider and set ram voltage to 2.2
vcore for cput 1.375 or so.
Try that.
Just my random guess.

ya, i was thinking i may need to mess with the ram, but i cant find where in the ds3 bios that i can change the timings, do i need to flash the bios maybe, still running with w/e stock bios were sent.

No gigabyte hides them in advanced settings. This is why I hate their boards.

It's a keyboard command..

I will look it up ..

Try CRTL + F1

thanks ctrl + f1 worked to bring up mem timings, setting to what you said i was able to get p95 running now @ 7x333, but couldnt get it to post much higher, wouldnt post at 350.

So thinking maybe its a problem with the ram?, or could it possibly be my power supply, its pretty old and am upgrading along with my vid card which will order in a few days.

gonna leave p95 up a few hours during pats game and come back to see if any errors

edit: also what kinda temps should i look at to be under for max load, and how high is it safe to push the vcore on an e6300, thanks a lot for any help.

I think 70*c is the limit.

It could actually be your motherboard limiting you. I haven't ever had much luck ocing with Gigabyte.

You're maxing out at 2.33 ghz roughly.. hmm that seems a tad low.. I would expect 2.8 at least..

I really think it's the board hitting its limit though.

Wait for someone more experienced maybe?

What speed are you trying to run the memory at? What is your memory divider?

thanks rainman, cant believe i overlooked my divider, had it on auto and i think when i upped the fsb was running ram at 999mhz, had to drop it down to 2 and just booted up at 7x400, gonna keep it here for a while and get some stress testing in, temps look good so far.

Majority of problems stem from changing too many variables at once.

c0x, this next bit is not aimed at you, but at people who hopefully read this thread and learn something from it.

Folks, scientific method does matter. Sure, we're not in high school chemistry...but the principles are the same. Find a way to eliminate the variables so that you're only messing with one thing at a time. Thus, why most OC guides (like in the sticky at the top of the page) suggest loosening the timings and memory speeds/dividers...before cranking up the CPU.

Ha I told you to check your divider up top, we could of saved a few hours..
