forgive me if im just not seeing it, but do we have anything thinktank sections or documents on getting the highest throughput PPD from our hardware? Im loading Arch linux over on my 4ghz i7 rig right now to see if maybe i can tweak that client to push numbers faster. but i dont think its far off to wonder if people are already doing this work if yall can point me the right way :)

Ya, there are plenty of people who have good tweaks, hopefully they will chime in, never tried arch linux myself, but you should get some nice PPD off of that 930 with a trimed down linux install

Im gonna give it a shot. I'm folding away on a fresh arch-linux-x64 build with 3.0 kernel with -bigadv and -smp. So hopefully maybe i get better PPD then rather then when i was in Windows.

You should get much higher PPD. I got between 40-50% better PPD on SMP in linux than windows 7, and I had windows 7 cut down a bit.

Look at the Ubuntu optimisation thread here: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1601608

Yes its ubuntu but the principles and optimization steps should apply, although you might find it easier to just go with Ubuntu in the end.

Basically to get the best output on that rig you would want to install the BFS kernel, and see if that makes a difference, thekraken would probably not help on an i7 quad much as its really designed for multi-socket machines.

There are also some dedicated Linux distros for folding either for in a Virtual Machine or directly to the metal by a guy called linuxrouter http://www.linuxforge.net/docs/crunching/fah-vmware.php

The link Biffa provided is everything I know about optimization. Key points:
1. Linux is far better than Windows right now
2. Distros do not matter enough to worry about, if at all - we have numbers from many "optimized" kernels, and none were any better than a basic Ubuntu Desktop 64 bit install.
3. BFS is better for <32 cores. CFS is better for >32 cores. 32 is about the cutover point - I run CFS on my 32 core machine mainly because I never got around to installing BFS and comparing
4. Tear's The Kraken wrapper should be used for any multi-processor machine, It is not needed for single processor machines, regardless of # of cores.
5. While it seems logical that less "stuff" running should help performance, it really doesn't matter. A full-blown Ubuntu Desktop install with all the garbage that installs with it performed exactly the same as a stripped-down Gentoo install.

Yeah I noticed linuxforge was having issues. Too bad, it's a great resource.

I'm running CFS with The Kraken on my 2600k. The frame times are the same as running BFS without The Kraken. This may not be the case for all systems, but for mine, there was no difference between the two configurations.

+1 - that site is an excellent resource. Most of my boxen are running a modified PXE image from that site.

And the site is up right now...

My ISP has been running like crap the past two weeks causing my site to be offline intermittently. I think today the service was finally fixed. At least I am hoping so.

No its not, you should have advmethods off, to be sure you getbigadv wus rather than regular smp.
