So I bought oblivion from steam, I thought it was going to be sweet, I can't even play the game. I don't like to play in full screen so I have it set to windowed mode. It puts the game up in the corner of my screen and I can't move it. It locks the mouse to the window, if I alt tab it does nothing to release the mouse, if I open task manager the game window closes. Anyone know how to change this?

You could try editing the .ini file. It's in My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\oblivion.ini
Near the top under the [Display] section are the variables:
iLocation Y=0
iLocation X=0
bFull Screen=1
iSize W=1680
iSize H=1050
I'm assuming iLocation Y/X are the position of the screen in windowed mode.

Link has additional info on window positioning

I don't want to be an ass, but you do know that Google can solve most of your issues with a game this old, right?

Also, using the forum search function, I think there's several threads you can dig up which talk about how to get started with Oblivion.

There is nothing on google about how to unlock the mouse from the window and keep oblivion from closing when you hit ctrl alt del, if you can find it let me know. I can change the position with the ini file like posted above but still that is pretty useless if I can't unlock the mouse from the window and not have oblivion close.

that's a common issue with many Bethseda games, they don't like it when you tab out of them and that causes them to crash more often than not when you do.

Why are you playing in such a small window? If you play in a window that is set to your native resolution, it should have the same effect as playing in a window but centered and giving you full screen real estate.

yeah but what is the point playing in a window if it is full screen? I want to be able to use other stuff while playing not just locked into oblivion

now that I think about it, I think that the CTD for tabbing out is done on purpose, you're supposed to IMMERSE yourself in TES games, not tab out of them!

Hate to rain on your parade but Oblivion never was stable when you minimize/maximise it, that goes for window mode too. I'm digging deep but I seem to remember that much atleast. The game is poorly optimized all around, and crashing just became a "way of life" with Oblivion. I wouldn't recommend running windowed.

That is not my experience, Oblivion was rock stable for me after patches. The game has been out for like 4 years now.

The point to playing in a window is so you can alt tab to other stuff faster. The window just takes up your screen.

What? You want to browse the internet on half your screen while Oblivion is running??!

press escape (to menu) before you tab out. Your chances of stability greatly increase.

edit, I can't stress enough how great Oblivion Crash Prevention System. (requires Oblivion Script Extender). That mod made a huge difference for me. It doesn't fix every crash, but it does take care of a lot of commonly known ones.

k i got the game here as well.. Installed and the game is not as beautiful as i seen some of the screenshot posted in the high res screenshot thread. Far distance terrain looked kinda dull and the lighting is not as epic as i thought. I have everything turned on max. Still look kinda plain and ugly.

That is because a lot of other people are using mods to make oblivion look better.

As previously mentioned, you will want to get some of the common mods used for this game. One of the mods I remember (from playing years ago) specifically deals with the fact that in the original game, distance textures are low quality and crappy looking. It gives you high res textures for scenery you see at a distance.

As for the "can't play properly in a window" problem, there are lots of games you can't play properly in a window. When this thing came out, practically no one could max out the settings and still get a playable framerate, it required hardware which didn't exist to do so. So being able to play in a window while simultaneously watching youtube videos or something was not exactly high on anyone's list of priorities.

^^ On that note ^^

If you run the game within Steam, just shift-tab and open the browser.

From there, you can run Pandora/Youtube etc. without issue.

thank you for that information, the Blessing of the Nine upon you sir!

Just bought the game, had no issues launching it whatsoever, now to find some good mods!!!

i'm having a few problems getting oblivion mods to work correctly but i'm working on it, Googling up some solutions and looking at Youtube. I couldn't tell if the devil may cry animations were working or not, since i have a new game save and well :(

I'll try and scrape together some old saves, or I KNOW my friend has a few capped toons.

Maybe I'll post a save on mediafire for ya....?

Yeah, that Devil May Cry mod looks prettttty tight.

Up till now, I've only messed with visual/ui enhancements.

But this Devil May Cry, Deadly Reflex, and Midas Magic Spells mods all look real, real nice.

do any of you know what mod that person used to show stuff during combat like BRUTAL, CARNAGE, and stuff?

also the motion blur, i want

i have most of the mods on her list, but not those, please halps

No way can that be max settings... that looks so shit.

Hahaha thats what i said to myself when i finally got out of the sewer. Compare to the SS i saw from other. Their looked beautiful. If its a mod that make the game beautiful, then can someone point me to the right direction. I seen quite a few mod out there and i have no idea where to start or which one is the best one.

Spend 50 bucks and get a cheap LCD for a second monitor.....

I too got in on the Oblivion Steam sale. I spent last weekend researching mods and settled on something called TCOM.

http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AYTrAQ8yzT__ZHpwNHc0ZF84ZDgzOHR2Zm0&hl=en

I started with a clean install, followed the instructions carefully, and the game runs pretty well with all the mods. It is a TOTALLY different game. The leveling system makes more sense, the inventory & menus are easier to use, there's a crafting system, tons new quests, npc's, equipment, a couple of new races, cosmetic options, a bajillion new spells, a totally revamped magic system that makes pure spellcasters viable and fun to play, a totally revamped stealth system that makes assassination fun and gives a reason to backstab with a dagger instead of a longsword, and a totally revamped combat system that is much faster and more responsive than the vanilla version.

The package also includes graphical fixes and upgrades so the environments are much prettier than in the original game. (I originally played Oblivion on console back at release. Modded Oblivion is a much, much better game.)

It took me about 3 hours to get TCOM up and running, but it did work the first time. All of the mods really can take a toll on your system though. I now run into some framerate issues in the Imperial City that I am still trying to tweak. Also, I've noticed that my game crashes every hour or so. However, unmodded Morrowind used to crash at least that often, so I'm not sure if the crashing is Oblivion's fault or the mods'.

Has anyone had stuttering in their audio when sprinting? When I just walk, there is no stuttering whatsoever. However, when I start sprinting, all sounds other than the soundtrack stutter.

I have the Oblivion Stutter remover installed as well as a few other mods. It's odd because I used the exact same mods as a buddy of mine who has about the exact same hardware as I do other than he has the Creative XtremeGamer soundcard while I have the XtremeGamer Fatality version. I haven't had audio problems in any other games. Is there a setting that I may need to change?

Edit: Forgot to add that I use the AC3 Filter for viewing MKV files and I have noticed that the AC3 Filter runs on all Bethesda games that I have (Fallout 3 and Oblivion) while I have yet to see it run in any others. I don't remember any slowdown in the audio in Fallout.
