Oblivion PC performance

Some of us are PC gamers to the core, screw consoles, long live the mouse and keyboard.

1. Xbox 360 = $299 or $399, and will handle the game very very nicely.
2. Top end video card $500, and will require the rest of the computer (ie money) to run the game nicely.

A 360 is a more logical approach to playing next gen games unless you want to spend $1500 instead of $400. Times a changin', and believe it or not its actually more economial to go console this go around. I'm an avid pc gamer of 16 years, and I finally made this realization.

If you're content with wasting cash, have at it. I'd rather adapt to using a controller then blow a few hundred buck :p

Yes, but he added in a monitor WITH the pc as well

I guess he has a point if you are starting from scratch with no pc, no tv and no monitor. I think most of us on this forum have computer monitors.

Can your xbox 360:

Download Music?
Download Movies?
Get you onto [H]?

Didn't think so. If you get an xbox 360, you still need a PC. If you get a pc, you don't need a 360 ;)

I would have done further testing but I had to leave for work. When I get home tonight I will do quite a large examination of INSIDE, OUTSIDE, and ENEMY photos. The reason I did the one in the church was because thats where I left off last night so it only took a couple seconds to grab a screenie.

1. Yes. I can stream it from my home computer
2. Yes. Trailers at this point :p
3. Not yet

MS is going to be doing a HUGE update to Live this coming year, which will include an iTunes like service. Expect an announcement at E3.

But honestly I'm an avid pc gamer, I love pc games. BUT ............. The 360 is the better value plain and simple.

He's got a decent point, don't get me wrong :)

Like i said, it's oversimplified. For those that already have a HDTV (like me for example) movies, cable, american idol, pick your guilty pleasure it looks cheaper to get the 360.

But for those who already have the PC , for RTS, MMOG's, Work even, then the $300+ graphics card seems cheaper.

All said and done, it's just different strokes. BUT... play your 360 on your SDTV, or play oblivion on your x300, and then one or the other option starts to look mighty nice. Just because it seems better to you though doesn't make it better for everyone.

That's the point.

Xbox 360 = $400
Widescreen High Def LCD TV that only goes up to 1388x768 = $3000+
~$3500.

PC with 7800gtx and a64 3800+ ~ $1200
23 in. widescreen lcd that does 1920x1200 = ~$1000
~$2250

or you can get a projector like I did..

Sanyo Z3 LCD HD 720p Front Projector (i have a 108" screen it throws, have my Digital Cable, 360 and PC all hooked up to it and the 5.1 surround sound HT)

$1500

I still have a question no one seems to have answered. Where are the option to do ULTRA and HIGH settings in Oblivion? I never seen these, even though I believe I have everything completely Maxed?

I don;t remember exactly but when you first start the game, there is a video option window (resolution, hdr, bloom), I think that is where the option for ultra or high can be selected.

Who has the new Nvidia drivers?

What's the return on them? I'll have to wait until tonight.

~XFX 7800GT 450/1100.

Lots of us will disagree on that. I can live without an Xbox 360, but I can't live without my computer on which I do EVERYTHING from work, to banking, to playing games. The 360 is a good for gaming and some media, but still lags behind the PC on versatility. If all you want to do is game and you don't have a PC, then the 360 is a good deal. Otherwise, PC beats it hands down.

I installed the new 84.25 drivers during lunch and went deer hunting on the country side as well as checking out some random cave. I don't see any drastic playability increase with max settings @ 1280x1024, 4xAA, Bloom (HDR is nice but not nicer enough to live with jaggies IMO)

I'm sure if I ran FRAPS there'd be a measurable difference, but I don't care about measureable differences, I care about NOTICEABLE differences.

On the other hand, I am running with Vsync enabled, perhaps I'll try without it. I started out playing yesterday with Vsync off but I couldn't stand the tearing, I dunno how anyone can. Then again I'm pretty annoyed by the hitching WITH it enabled, so meh.

X2 @ 2.4, 7900GTX, 2 GB DDR400

PS - has anyone been able to tell if Oblivion is actually USING both cores on dual core procs? I played it in windowed mode with the task manager minimized to the tray, and it didn't look to me like the CPU ute graph was ever going over 50%. I thought this game was supposed to be heavily multi-threaded

pulling about 35 fps according to FRAPS in the pic below (with the old driver, 84.21), windowed mode, 1280x800. Haven't checked with 84.25's yet.

P4 2.8 Northwood clocked at 3.0
1gb DDR Running in Duel Channel
74gb 10krpm Raptor
6800GS OC AGP All pipes unlocked (400/1050)

Auto detected at High Settings full distance on everything with HDR enabled, game looks so friggin beautiful. Still only using a 15" LCD so 1024x768 is my max but I havent noticed any slow downs at all.

Several people have reported that uninstalling DefilerPak and/or ffdshow gives large performance boost for some reason. Apparently ffdshow runs and leaves a bunch of icons in your system tray while you are playing. Others have reported that setting “bUse Joystick=0” in the .ini file will help as well.

I can attest that I have lots of those icons sitting down there after I play the game for a while - like 25-40 of them. I'll try uninstalling defiler pak and report back on what happens.

I'm actually glad I can read this thread while my game sits waiting for me to install it. Allll the things you kind people get to figure out so I know what I'll be looking for when it comes time for me to play... Like the FFShadow thing.. I KNOW I'll have that issue.

:)

Thanks

EDIT: I am also wondering about the dual core enhancements... doesn't seem like it's hammering the cpu like I would have expected.. hrm.....

True, but thats if we're talking about throwing away a pc for a 360. My point is, instead of spending $1500 in PC hardware "UPGRADES" for gaming, buying a $400 360 is a better deal. You will still have a computer for everything you need, however now you can play all the next gen games at high resolutions with all the eye candy on for just the price of a 'decent' video card.

;)

I bought Oblvion for my pc because I can play it fine on my current rig. However, I bought a 360 instead of wasting cash for upgrading my pc again, and perhaps buying 1-2 games that can actually even push all that expensive hardware. I spend the LARGE majority of my time on my PC playing maybe 1-2 games, and browsing forums. As I grew older I realized how foolish it was to blow $1400+ every 2 years in pc upgrades when I truely never used them ...

replaced my screencap with a thumb linking to the full size cap so I don't screw up the page margins ;)

Anyone know how my system

P4 3.0 capable of OCing to 3.5~ghz
1gb 3200

would run Oblivion with a 7800GS (AGP card)?

I'm looking for very high settings at 1280x1024 with no AA, maybe 2x anisotropic, and HDR enabled.

Anyone?

using console I would have spent $500 plus whatever a new tv would cost as i am not risking my life trying to game on our good tv when the wife is watching her shows. I guess I could always game after 10pm, but work might get effected then. And I am not even going to try and suggest a new TV just to game on.

Well I decided to try it on my 6100 integrated video (this is temporary until I get a 7900GT), I got abound 20 FPS when looking at a wall with no dynamic lighting effects and about 10 when in combat with the two rats!

well I get this and nothing says high or ultra.... Best I could come up with would be in game options and it says Textures "HUGE"

The only time you see the "Ultra High" or "High" settings is when you push the "Defaults" button and the game detects your hardware and says "Oblivion has detected your hardware and is set for Medium settings." Or something along those lines. If you don't have a powerful GPU though you don't get to pick the High ones.

Oh so High and Ultra really is just resolution, and a mixture of AA / and distant rendering options. You can change those to what ever you want so in reality I am doing ultra right?

I know when it auto detected me it didnt know my GPU (probably too new) and defaulted me to medium settings (I think even put at 800x600) I then upped everything manually. SO I am running Ultra right?

Are you serious? Cuz right now it detects my 7900GTX as "unknown", so you're saying that even though I went back and changed all the game options to max, I'm still missing out on some things?

No, all of the options that the configuration programs configures are ones that you can manually mess with, too (draw distance, bloom/HDR, AA, texture size, etc.).

7900 cards weren't out at the time the configuration program was written, which is why it says your card is unknown. But since we know it's a bad ass card, just go in there and crank up the settings ;)

You need a HD TV to get it looking anything like as good as it does on a PC, everyone that says console are cheap automatically figures that everyone has a TV.

I don't have a TV, I dont need one I download only the TV epsiodes that take my fancy, if I wanted an Xbox360 i'd also need to buy a TV for my place, and if i wanted to get a DECENT TV so that the quality of the picture looked ANYTHING close to a PC then i'd be spending a LOT

From what I hear I am glad I got a 1280x1024 native rez LCD monitor.

fx-60, asus a8n32-sli deluxe, sli PNY 7800GTX 256, and 4gigs of Corsair 3500LL pro.

2 more weeks until my phase change system gets here for my proc. I cannot wait to see how good this game looks! WOOT!

Good point.

But keep in mind seeing as analog TV signals will be 'shut off' by 2008/2009 the large majority of consumers will have or be upgrading to HDTVs. Its inevitable ;)

It is just not worth my time to get this until I upgrade my 9700pro to a 7900GT? (I've got a 3500+, gig of ram, and an xfi)

i have a 2400+ and 1 gig and 5900nu.

I run this game like crap even at low settings 1024 x 768 texture set to low.

I only get 10 fps in the beginning where you are in the cell.

Damn this game is demanding

switched it to 800x 500 and only icnreased in 6 fps.

This is not necessarily indicative of it NOT using bothh cores moreover its probably teh opposite. If the earlier post is any indicator it probably means that the load is spit between the two cores. Anyone else look at this?

Preliminary results:

Just got in my 2 sticks of 1GB G.Skill. I put them in and checked some things out.

First let me say that all of these observations were while I was walking around, and not while I was engaged in combat. There were at times several NPC around, but no fighting.

Most amount of RAM that was used at any one point in time (including that used for the system) was 911MB. I appears as if having 2GB will not do much (if anything) for you in this game.

It is using both cores.

At the most I could see (fluxuating every second) it used something like 78% of core0 and 65% of core1. A single threaded app would never do this. Of course, this makes me believe them that it is in fact GPU limited.

More results will come as soon as I have some more time to play it.

1024x768 High Settings with full distance and HDR as i stated in an earlier post, looks damn beautiful.

I dont know why so many people arent using HDR it looks unbelievable with it on.
