oblivion official plugins

Pointless to buy them.
Someone will just end up moding better things anyways.

It does bother me to think that they spent time creating these instead of working on a patch for some of the major bugs that have been found.

The horse armor looks cool, but why do we need to pay for it?

I totally agree. I presume it's a way for them to squeeze some extra cash out of some people.

The towers and stuff look kool, but IM not paying for them, someone who downloads them needs to put them online for the rest of us to get for free. I would consider this legal pirating at this point, as you shouldnt have to pay for the extra content....

for some reason the first thing to come to mind is "Group buy"!!!

what is tokepp some mod group from taking donations of like 0.01 cents from a bunch of people, downlaoding the mod, an then releasing their mod which is the same extaxt thing minus some of the colors being different

This really, really annoys me. I'm going to /try/ not to blame the Xbox 360 kids for this, but that does seem to be the first point of contention.

I will not be buying these addons. Horse armor is not worth $2. Would I pay $10 for a mini expansion, complete with new voice acted quests, factions, dungeons and items? Yes. Will I pay 20-30 for a full expansion? Certainly. However, I will not pay $2 for bloody horse armor.

The worst part is, as much as others say "Oh the modders will make it", this time it may not really be true. Morrowind allowed for 3dStudioMax imports and exports to create new models and s and whatnot. This time, Bethsoft hasn't released it. Without it, they can only use models that are already in the game, if I'm right. Thus it appears that they want to prevent the modding community from being able to actually create new content, rather than modify and rehash old stuff.

Its a pity. I had such high hopes, after the variety of mods created for morrowind. Did the almighty dollar finally get to Bethsoft? Or was it Microsoft's doing...

I think that EA has ruined the world for everyone.
The first thing I thought when I saw these plug-in's was.. What an EA idea this is.

Seeing as how you can buy these addons for both the PC and 360 side, I think we have established it is of no doing of Microsoft's.

Are you sure, Rich? It seems to be that the mods costing money for both the PC and 360 is strong evidence of Microsoft's doing.

With Morrowind (for the original Xbox, as well as PC) both groups of players paid $50 for the game. However, the PC users had the wealth of TESConstruction Set w/ 3DSMax exporter and the mods that would rise from the community. Xbox users, due to techical limitations, did not (I heard rumors on people loading p mods from modchipped Xboxes but I'm going to assume that this was not the case for 99% of Xbox users). I don't think anyone can argue that the PC user got a better deal.

Now fast forward to Oblivion, which at release cost 49.99 for the standard PC version, and 59.99 for the standard X360 version. Through the Xbox Live service, MS has already set the standard for allowing players to buy little addons for "points", which usually add up to $1-3 a piece for pictures/wallpaper and sundry little things for other games. Keeping with this tradition, it seems feasable for MS to ask Bethesda to create some pay-to-play content to be released across Xbox live.

Now, if Bethesda was to release the same content for free for the PC because many PC companies regularly put out free little content addons, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that some people would see that the PC version was a much better deal. Take for instance the Morrowind mods section - there are whole suits of armor, special items and even a campaign location that were made available for free.

Thus, it seems logical that the Xbox Live's paid content "heritage" if you will, is the reason that the PC version of oblivion is subjected to the same treatment.

This will be further confirmed in the event that Bethesda does not release the 3D Studio Max exporter, effectively limiting the spectrum of mods that can be produced.

I have to agree whole heartedly. Horse armor may look cool, but it's completely useless! How many people actually take their horse into combat? What's the point of having armor on a horse when you can't even fight from horseback!

Now, if they made this into a horse armor/mounted combat mod with saddlebags added in I would happily pay up to $5.00 for it.

call me crazy...

well if bethesda does not provide or allow a 3dmax exporter to be used by the public, then we know that they do not want the modding community to make mods for free, ie: a different set of horse aromor.

bethesda and (or) microsoft should not make the pc version of oblivion equal to the xbox360's version, "average" people on consoles do not have any intention of creating mods for oblivion, so why should the pc world suffer?
the (free) modding community is what kept morrowind going for so long.

It's their hard work to make this content and if they wish to charge for it then so be it. If you think you can get something similiar for free then go for it. I just hope this doesn't mean the exclusion of the editor in the next ES title...

I guess the only way to show them how to feel is NOT to buy the armor or any mini download for the game. I would be almost be willing all this new content will show up in a expansion somewhere down the line. Its all about nickel and diming and it’s the only thing about the game I don't like. I spent 60 bucks for the collector edition but I have no interest in getting armor or a new house after paying that much for a game.

That wouldn't stand up to scientific reasoning for even a second.

Internet research is far from substantial.

I also have this information for a reliable source. Trust me guys, there are no need for tinfoil hats here. ;)

Rich, I read through that link you posted and this quote caught my eye

""We based the price on the other items you can currently download, like themes and gamer pictures, so a theme on Xbox Live is 150 Marketplace points, the Kameo Christmas Costume was 200 points, and our downloads will be around those prices," the rep told GameSpot News."

That seems to be exact evidence of the point I was trying to make. This quote suggests the impetus for creating for pay content was Xbox Live. Thus, it would be unfair to give the PC players this content for free, if the Xbox players had to pay for it.

What I object to is that, seemingly because of the devlopment of the Xbox360 version, the PC modding community has been given a proverbial slap to the face. I object to the fact that Bethesda has changed their relationship with the modding community. Could this have happened because of sheer greed? Yes. But it seems that the Xbox has a lot to do with it in this context.

Is there something I overlooked?

My interpretation of the article is Bethesda is saying "We looked at the present model, and used that to gauge our pricing". The logic of blaming MS on this one is basically they have a service, and it's their fault for having it?

You can't blame the Live implementation for a companies decision to attempt a foray into that market.

I am sure that Live set up the ability to do this, and implemented it. But it was Bethesda alone that made the move. That's all I'm saying.

Okay, I think we agree on what's happening. My personal feeling is that, as a consumer, I am annoyed at Bethesda's willingness to embrace this new practice. Is it completely within their right to do so as a business? Yes, of course it is. However, I have the strong feeling that if Oblivion was only developed for the PC, they wouldn't have made the foray into this new paid content market.

Here's something that you would probably know better than most of us - Does Microsoft require or heavily encourage Xbox 360 titles to have downloadable pay-to-play content in order to partake of Live, or even to be published on the system at all?

Ok, I see exactly what you mean as well. However, for all we know the guys at Bethesda could have seen what BF2 and HL2 are doing, and are testing something along those lines. You could be right, but it could swing either way, that's all I'm saying. Let's be fair until we know either way.

As for your question, that is honestly something I cannot answer. I do not have any good working knowledge of Live or the inner workings of Microsoft.

It seems alot of companies seem to be pulling an EA latley, I'm half expecting this long awaited CoD2 patch to be a $20 expansion.
